  1. This is older data below, but speaks to what Proseteye mentioned earlier. The US spends $600billion per year on K-12 education. The money is there issue is with how the money is spent, ie billion of dollars spent each year on textbooks, desire for smaller class sizes, etc. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-education-spending-tops-global-list-study-shows/
  2. Not that we would not want things today to be better than in years past, but the "expectations" today are mindblowing. When I think of public schools and even "rich" private schools from 30+ years ago...it is like a different universe. Kids today would look at some of the weight rooms and say "Are you kidding me? " ...tiny sweatboxes. There are older folks on tight budgets who grew up very poor who get a bad taste in their mouth when they see something like this below and at the same time hear about how our teachers are underpaid and students are failing.
  3. It is Emmanual Cook, who led Palm Beach Gardens to a 49-29 win over Deerfield Beach in the 2005 6A final at Dolphins Stadium in Miami, rushing for 243 yards and 4 TD's. He was recognized as the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Player of the Year for large schools that year. He ran for 373 yards and 5 TD's in a game against Atlantic. Was ranked as the No. 21 safety in the country by Rivals.com, who also tabbed him as the No. 51 player in the state of Florida, regardless of position. Earned Freshman All-SEC honors and was second Team All-SEC his sophomore year at U of South Carolina as a safety. Good job Muck City and Flo'. ...interesting note...2005 was one of only 2 years in the past 25 where a Miami-Dade team did not play for a state title...the other was 2000.
  4. In his senior season, this running back from the modern era led his team to its first and only state title game appearance against a team that was also making its first title game appearance. He turned in one of the better rushing performances in state title game history, scoring 4 TD's and rushing for over 200 yards. His team's rushing game was so dominant in that title game, their qb only attempted one pass the entire game. He rushed for over 2000 yards in his senior season and also played as a linebacker. He later attended the University of South Carolina, where he played as a defensive back. Although signed by NFL teams, his NFL career never took off as hoped. Who is he and for what team did he play?
  5. Below is data that demonstrates how passing has become a more prominent part of the game. I used the combined totals from all state title games each year to determine the averages. Average # plays/game (both teams) Average # passes/game (both teams) Average rush%/pass% 2000 108 27 75%/25% 2001 104 32 69%/31% 2002 110 33 71%/29% 2003 104 23 78%/22% 2004 106 30 72%/28% 2005 117 34 70%/30% 2006 116 38 67%/33% 2007 103 37 64%/36% 2008 105 38 63%/37% 2009 110 31 71%/29% 2010 111 40 64%/36% 2011 108 30 72%/28% 2012 118 43 65%/35% 2013 113 40 64%/36% 2014 108 34 69%/31% 2015 112 39 65%/35% 2016 111 39 65%/35% 2017 117 41 65%/35%
  6. ...interesting. I added the data in bold below. There was substantially more passing in the 2015 title games. In the 2003 title games, 2 of 14 teams attempted 20 passes in a game and the average play mix was 78% rush/22% pass. In 2015, 7 of 16 teams attempted 20 passes in a game and the average play mix was 65% rush/35% pass. I also corrected the play count for the 2003 4A game. 2003-104 plays/game average; average # pts of winning team = 22 572 rushes=82/game average 159 passes=23/game average 78% rush/22% pass 1A-96 plays Trinity Christian 21 v Ft Meade 7 (83 rush, 13 pass) 2B-116 Pahokee 21 v Union County 6 (86 rush, 30 pass) 2A-103 Chaminade-Madonna 27 v Madison County 0 (83 rush, 20 pass) 3A-105 Monsignor Pace 21 v Bolles 17 (72 rush, 33 pass) 4A-110 Armwood 29 v Lake Gibson 21 (82 rush, 28 pass) 5A-103 Mainland 24 v Naples 13 (79 rush, 24 pass) 6A-98 Carol City 13 v Edgewater 0 (87 rush, 11 pass) 2015- 112 plays/game on average; average # pts of winning team = 43 583 rushes=72/game average 312 passes=39/game average 65% rush/35% pass 1A-97 plays Trenton 56 v Pt St Joe 21 (65 rush, 32 pass - PSJ had 24 passes, Trenton had 8) 2A-109 University Christian 61 v Cambridge 16 (82 rush, 27 pass - Cambridge had 17 passes, UC had 10) 3A-131 Trinity Chrisitan 30 v Am Heritage Delray 3 (78 rush, 53 pass - AHD had 28 passes, TC had 25) 4A-128 Booker T Washington 42 v Raines 23 (72 rush, 56 pass - Raines had 31 passes, BTW had 25) 5A-104 Bishop Moore 37 v Wakulla 34 (70 rush, 34 pass - Wakulla had 18 passes, BM had 16) 6A-104 Central 48 v Armwood 13 (71 rush, 33 pass - Central had 19 passes, Armwood had 14) 7A-110 STA 45 v Viera 10 (65 rush, 45 pass - Viera had 30 passes, STA had 15) 8A-112 Flanagan 26 v Osceola 7 (80 rush, 32 pass - Flanagan had 27 passes, Osceola had 5)
  7. 8. Robert Love of Pahokee was 23/37 and set an individual state final record with 502 passing yards against Ocala Trinity Catholic in the 2005 2B title game, but Trinity pulled out a 37-30 win despite giving up nearly 4 times as many yards on offense. Love threw 4 TD passes of 50 yards or longer, including 3 in a furious third quarter comeback that started with Pahokee down 30-7. Martavious Odoms caught 9 passes for 188 yards and Tamarcus Porter caught 8 passes for 169 yards. Only a handful of receivers in history have ever had more than 150 receiving yards in a title game. Robert Love went to Florida A&M, but ran into problems. Douglas Cook of University School set a state final record with 43 completions in 61 attempts for 430 passing yards(second highest yardage in state final history behind Love) against Ocala Trinity Catholic in the 2010 2B final, but Trinity pulled out a 56-55 3OT win. Nick Kutscher set a state final record with 14 receptions for 134 yards and Daniel Braverman had 10 receptions for 94 yards. University only gained 38 yards on the ground in 30 attempts. Douglas went on to play at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. So, the answer is Ocala Trinity Catholic. Great job 561! In other games... Godby beat Immokalee 21-20 in the 5A 2012 final despite a 301-yard passing performance by Tshumbi Johnson, who went on to play at the U of Cincinnati and Valdosta St. American Heritage Delray beat North FL Christian 31-28 in the 1A 2007 final despite a 307-yard passing performance by Clink Trickett, who went on to play at FSU and West Virginia U and now coaches at FAU.
  9. ...one data point. When one looks at the top qb performances in terms of passing yardage in state finals, the majority of the top 20 are south FL qb's and 80% of the games took place 2005 or later.
  10. I just have the total points scored by all winning teams for each year
  11. 2000-32 2001-28 2002-22 2003-22 2004-36 2005-42 2006-29 2007-32 2008-33 2009-31 2010-34 2011-41 2012-35 2013-40 2014-34 2015-43 2016-28 2017-28
  12. Apopka gave up a bunch of passing yards in both games...but not 300. Their game against Cypress Bay broke the state series record for most yards by 2 teams in a game. Jaranta Lewis, the qb for Cypress Bay, went on to play for Northern Michigan U. Tucker Beirne, a record-setting qb at Columbus, went to the U of Miami, where he got into trouble with the law.
  13. Tallahassee Lincoln has done it once. Dan Shula of St Thomas Aquinas, grandson of famous Dolphins coach Don Shula, lit up Lincoln for over 300 passing yards in the 2001 4A title game, but Lincoln had enough offense of their own to win 28-20. ..not Palm Bay
  14. When a team gives up 300+ passing yards in a state title game, they normally lose. A few teams have beaten the odds, though, and won a state title despite giving up that many passing yards. In fact, since 2000, one team has done it twice. The teams they beat still haven't gotten over it, I'm sure! Who is the team?
  15. In 2010, Cocoa's star back at the time, Chevelle Buie, was suspended for the semifinal and final games. As stated above, Cocoa beat Madison County in the semi and then beat Glades Central in the final..all with only 1 completed pass. That tells you how deep they were at the rb position. They had a tough defense that year, giving up only 44 points in 4 playoff games.
  16. When one looks at the data below, it begs the question "why?" Have offenses gotten more explosive? Is there not as much emphasis on defense as in the past? Has the increase in classifications resulted in less parity? etc etc Opinions? Below is the average number of points scored by the state champions in each decade. 1970's 23 points 1980's 26 points 1990's 28 points 2000's 31 points 2010's(so far) 35 points Prior to 2010, there was only one year in which the average number of points scored by all state champions was 40 or more...42 in 2005. So far this decade, we have experienced 3 such years (41 in 2011, 40 in 2013, and 43 in 2015). Interestingly, the last two seasons, the average has been 28...the lowest back-to-back averages since 2002/2003. In 2013, the biggest scores were in the upper classes. In the 2014, the biggest scores were in the lower classes. So, it is not as if the big scores this decade are all coming from a certain class(es).
  17. This was a very tight call. Both Cocoa and Osceola have played in 5 state title games, and neither has ever completed a passing TD in one of those games. In their 5 title games, Osceola has attempted slightly more passes, has had a game in which they completed more than 5 passes(6 vs Titusville in the 1982 3A final), and had more than 1 game with more than 40 passing yards (just barely). So, the answer is Cocoa! Cocoa beat Madison County(another big running team) at Boot Hill in the 2010 state semis. You know there was not much passing in that game! As it turned out, Cocoa did not complete a pass that game, and only completed 1 in the state final that year. Cocoa HS State Title Game Stats 2017 91 yds rush/62 yds pass(4completions/13attempts) LOSS 2016 425 yds rush/0 yds pass(0/1) WON 2010 131 yds rush/22 yds pass(1/1) WON 2009 316 yds rush/37 yds pass(4/4) WON 2008 115 yds rush/37 yds pass(3/14) WON TOTAL 1088 yds rush/158 yds pass
  18. Prior to 2010, Madison County played in 5 state title games. They had a total of two passing TD's in those 5 games. In the 4 title games last decade, they threw for a whopping, combined total of 84 yards (4 completions/24 attempts). But this decade, Madison County was "pass happy" in the 3 title games they have played, completing 22 of 35 passes for 302 yards and 2 passing TD's, including a 132-yard passing effort in 2012 against University School. So, it is not Madison County.
  19. The correct answer team makes Apopka look like a passing machine. In the 2012 title game, Apopka threw for 254 yards and had 2 passing TD's. In 2013, Apopka had 216 passing yards and 2 passing TD's (vs only 143 rushing yards). And in 2014, with only 82 passing yards, they managed a passing TD. Apopka is a fantastic running team, but they can throw the ball, too!
  20. I share this simply to show the sorts of "promises" that are going on around the country by state governments..in essence, using taxpayer money...to support what you are saying. http://www.richmond.com/news/virginia/government-politics/general-assembly/chinese-paper-company-tranlin-misses-deadline-to-pay-back-m/article_9577dc70-30be-5d27-a6c3-af0757f2c56d.html
  21. This school has appeared in several state title games during its history. In those games, the team never completed more than 5 passes and in only one of those games did they pass for more than 40 yards. They once won a state title without completing a pass in the game. Who is the team?
