  1. Ft Lauderdale HS played Melbourne HS in the 1966 Class 2A state final in Ft Lauderdale. Ft Lauderdale has yet to win a playoff game since. Melbourne's best effort since was a 4A state semifinal appearance in 1990. Here is a broadcast of the game on WMMB 1240 AM in Melbourne...still around today. Unless one traveled, this was the only way. HS games on TV were quite rare until much later on. It was Melbourne 24-0 at halftime and they eventually went up 31-0. Final score was 31-12. Melbourne HS 387 yards rushing, 130 yards passing, 16 first downs Fort Lauderdale HS 152 yards rushing, 114 yards passing, 11 first downs
  2. Imagine being good enough to play for a state title and then not being able to win a single playoff game..for decades. Of all the teams that have won at least one FHSAA playoff game, this team has the longest dry spell of any team without a playoff win. Who is the team? a. Fort Lauderdale b. Hialeah c. Miami Beach d. Moore Haven e. Pompano Beach
  3. He claims victories goin waaaay back
  4. It is the Winter Park Wildcats, coached by Tim Shifflet....who has been there for 11 seasons. Their back-to-back regional final appearances the past two seasons are their deepest back-to-back playoff runs in over 30 years. Tim Shifflet grew up in western New York where his dad was a coaching legend. And just a five-minute walk from his house, a guy named Larry Gergley grew up, played football at the University of Buffalo with Shifflet's father and went on to become a coaching legend at Winter Park High School. Gergley retired after amassing 261 victories in 36 years at Winter Park. He led them to the state semis 3 times in the 1980's, losing twice to Miami Southridge and once to Tate from the Panhandle. Shifflet spent two years as Gergley's defensive coordinator and was Gergley's recommendation to succeed him. He worked with Gergley at both Winter Park and Bishop Moore, and also worked at UCF -- offensive graduate assistant for Mike Kruczek, recruiting administrator for George O'Leary -- and in New York at Amherst Sweet Home and Buffalo Canisius. He began coaching at age 21 at Sweet Home, where his father coached. Good job, Hwy17!
  5. Here is the website. Badbird, you owe ColumbiaFan an apology, sir. It is not his fault that 46 of the top 50 teams in the state did not compete for the state championship. And as far as no teams from south of Palm Beach being on the list....last time I checked there is nothing down there but palmetto scrub and alligators. https://www.fhs7v7a.com/page/show/3837051-fhs7v7a-2018-teams-
  6. C'mon badbird. ColumbiaFan told me Haines City is south Florida.
  7. ...my curiosity got the best of me...records vs Gainesville this past season. And here I was under the impression you owned them in most sports based upon the things you have said. Now I think you owe all of the nice folks from Gainesville some praise for their sports programs. Seriously, though, they have some good teams, as does Columbia. Football 1-0 Volleyball 0-2 Basketball/Boys 0-3 Basketball/Girls 1-2 Soccer/Boys 0-2 Soccer/Girls 2-1 Baseball 1-1 Softball 1-1 Track/Boys Gainesville scored higher at state meet Track/Girls Gainesville scored higher at state meet Wrestling Columbia scored higher at state meet Swimming&Diving/Boys Gainesville scored higher at state meet
  8. Is this what a tiger looks like as it is getting swallowed by a hurricane?
  9. Just as wealthy benefactors sponsor professorships at colleges, a great way for an NFL player to give back would be to establish an endowed coaching position at a school, even if it served to simply boost the coach's salary. With all of the transferring today, I can see things getting complicated, ie you went to a school for 3 years and transferred your senior season. Which really feels like your alma mater? Who do you support? What if you went to 4 different schools like some.
  10. Spruce Creek 19 Weeki Wachee 0@FlaHSFootball @FACACoach #UpGradeYourOFFSEASON Weeki Wachi's offensive struggles continue on the football field. They will be favorites in water polo this year, though
  11. This central Florida team has had only 3 coaches since 1970. Though they have had a fair amount of success since that time, they have never made it to a state final. They have been knocking on the door of late, though. This past year, they had one of their best seasons in recent memory. And they have made the regional finals each of the past 2 years. Which team is it and who is their current head coach?
  12. That's true. There has been a lot of discussion and I put together a list of current coaches and their tenures, from which the above question arose. The numbers are what they are. What do the numbers mean? Well, that's an interesting discussion for all of us to have.
  13. It is Jim Buckridge of Timber Creek, who has been there for 17 seasons and built a solid program. Orange County has 4 coaches with 10+ years of tenure. For perspective, Broward County, a much larger school district, has just one. Timber Creek/Jim Buckridge 17 seasons Apopka/Rick Darlington 16 seaons Bishop Moore/Matt Hedrick 16 seasons Winter Park/Tim Shifflet 12 seasons Good job Darter!
  14. This Orange County head coach has more tenure at his present school than any other Orange County coach does at their respective school. Who is he and where does he coach?
  15. The correct answer is "A" 29 public school teams in Broward County play in the FHSAA. 4 head coaches have been at their present school for more than 3 seasons. 11 head coaches have been at their present school for more than 1 season. So, about 60% of coaches have less than 2 seasons at their current school. 4 or more seasons Plantation-Steve Davis-12 seasons Fort Lauderdale-Richard Dunbar-8 seasons Douglas-Willis May-5 seasons Western-Adam Ratkevich-4 seasons
  16. His name is Vermin Supreme.
  17. More than half of the entire population of Georgia lives in the Atlanta MSA. So, one would expect a large portion of its top-ranked teams to be there. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties account for about 25% of the population of Florida, yet a large proportion of its elite-level teams are there. The remainder of Florida's counties combined have about twice as many people as the Atlanta MSA. From your list above, the best of the other counties would be...Venice, Armwood, Dr Phillips, St Augustine, Raines, Cocoa, Wekiva. Even with half of the population to pull from, the Atlanta MSA's top 7 would give them all they could handle. The point is simply that much of Florida is no more special than many places in the South. You need to see it for yourself, ColumbiaFan.
  18. He would have to beat this guy. Rumor has it he spent too much time on high school football forums early in life.
  19. If IMG disappeared and Miami-Dade, Broward and PalmBeach slid off into the Atlantic, we would not be beating our chest. They are what gives Florida most of its depth. St Thomas, IMG, Central, Booker T, etc, have brought Florida acclaim with success in OOS games, while most of our teams are not proven against top-flight OOS competition. We sometimes talk about the entire state of Florida as if it is far superior to other states. Put the top 10 teams from Atlanta or Dallas against the top 10 from Tampa Orlando or Jacksonville, and we would likely be in trouble, especially in the #6-10 range.
  20. University of Alabama has 29 people identified as "first team" on their 2018 projected depth chart. Breakdown of where the players are from: Alabama-6 Louisiana-5 Texas-4 Florida-3 Mississippi-2 Georgia-2 South Carolina-1 Kentucky-1 California-1 Iowa-1 Missouri-1 Maryland-1 Washington DC-1
  21. You are comparing a middleweight boxer to a heavyweight. The largest cities in Alabama...Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville and Mobile...each have about 200,000 people...about the same size as Tallahassee. Although the heavyweight might beat the middleweight in a fight, it does not necessarily make the latter any less elite. Put high schools from those Alabama cities up against schools from Tallahassee and you've got a fair fight. I'd encourage you to spend time there and judge the quality of football up close rather than from afar. The rosters of Auburn and AL are loaded with "local" kids from high schools you have never heard of...because a lot of them are smaller schools that do not make the national polls.
