GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Alonso Ravens (Tampa) ran the table to a perfect 23-0 season winning the Class 2A state championship just over two weeks ago. Now they are adding more recognition to the season they had.
On Monday, the Florida Dairy Farmers Sports Awards announced that Ravens senior quarterback Mieke Rowe and head coach Matt Hernandez took home the 2023 Miss Flag Football and Coach of the Year Awards respectively after a final round of voting by media and flag football coaches in the state.
Rowe, regarded as one of the most prolific passers in Florida flag football history, threw for 5,016 yards by completing 415-of-561 passes with 95 touchdown passes agains just 11 interceptions.
For Hernandez, he led Alonso to an unbeaten season that was capped off by a 33-6 win over Fleming Island to help the Ravens capture their first state championship since 2019 and their third state championships in program history. Alonso, also defeated Class 1A state champion Robinson (Tampa) 14-0 that captured the 2023 Capital City Classic title back in early April.
