TOP 15 ANALYSIS – AFTER WEEK 2
THE BIG PICTURE
The Northeast Florida region’s top 15 heading into Week 3 is one of the most dynamic early-season pictures in the state. Clay has staked out the top spot with two dominant shutouts. Ponte Vedra has emerged as one of the biggest surprise stories in the entire region after a two-game blitz in Week 2. Bartram Trail is quietly building one of the most impressive unbeaten resumes in Northeast Florida. And the Jacksonville-area programs โ always the backbone of this region โ are sorting themselves out through a slate of games this week that will look very different by Saturday night. With 48 total programs and a loaded schedule across all five days of the week, the Northeast Florida top 15 is about to get a thorough reshuffling.
No. 1 Clay โ Blue Devils’ Dominance Sets the Standard, Gauntlet Comes Late in Week
No program in Northeast Florida has made a more emphatic early statement than Clay. A 27-0 shutout of Ed White on Feb. 20 was followed by a 59-0 demolition of Gainesville on Feb. 24 โ and while both opponents currently sit in the lower tier of the regional standings, the margins of victory speak to a program operating at a different level than most of what surrounds them right now. Their schedule strength figure of 10.03 ranks 355th statewide, which falls in the bottom third of all Florida programs, meaning the true test of Clay’s dominance has not arrived yet. It arrives this week. Friday brings a matchup against Lyman, then Saturday brings a neutral-site double-header against Tocoi Creek and Ribault โ two programs from the regional standings that will provide Clay’s first meaningful measuring-stick opportunities of the season.
No. 2 Fleming Island โ Golden Eagles’ Position Is Under Immediate Pressure This Week
Fleming Island holds at second on the strength of their preseason rating despite a 1-1 record that includes a 12-6 loss to New Smyrna Beach in Week 1. The 29-6 win over Global Academy on Feb. 26 steadied the ship somewhat, but Global Academy currently sits in the lower tier of the regional standings. Their schedule strength figure of 14.80 ranks 302nd statewide, a middle-tier mark. The Golden Eagles face two significant tests this week โ Tuesday brings a matchup against Bolles, an unbeaten program sitting in the upper tier of the regional standings, and Thursday brings Ridgeview. Fleming Island’s hold on second could look very different by Friday morning.
No. 3 Ponte Vedra โ The Sharks Are the Region’s Most Surprising Story
Two games. Two wins. A combined point differential of plus-67. No Week 1 action. Ponte Vedra arrived in Week 2 with back-to-back dominant performances that announced their presence to the entire region โ a 27-6 win over Sandalwood on Feb. 24 followed by a stunning 46-0 shutout of Fletcher on Feb. 26. Fletcher currently sits in the middle tier of the regional standings and entered that game with a 2-3 record after one of the most active early-season schedules in the region, giving that shutout real credibility. Their schedule strength figure of 26.59 ranks 170th statewide. Monday brings Flagler Palm Coast, then Wednesday the Sharks face Creekside, and Friday they head to the Capital City Classic in Tallahassee where they draw Chiles โ the Panhandle’s No. 4 team. If Ponte Vedra can get through that gauntlet intact, the conversation about their ceiling changes dramatically.
