CENTRAL FLORIDA POWER 15: West Orange Climbs to No. 2 as Edgewater Falls and Seminole Keeps Rising

Central Florida produced another major shakeup in Week 2, even with Lake Mary holding onto the No. 1 spot.

The Rams finally played their first regular-season game and needed everything they had to get past Oviedo 24-23. West Orange, meanwhile, continued one of the region’s fastest early climbs by shutting out Horizon 53-0, while Seminole improved to 2-0 with a 24-7 win over Lake Howell.

The biggest head-to-head result near the top came at Edgewater, where The First Academy won 21-14. That sends Edgewater backward after entering the week at No. 2. Evans also delivered one of the strongest responses of Week 2, beating Boone 47-13 after losing its opener to Lake Nona.

Lake Mary Survives, West Orange Keeps Climbing

Lake Mary remains No. 1, but its first regular-season result was much closer than expected. Oviedo pushed the Rams to the final whistle before Lake Mary escaped with a 24-23 victory, giving the preseason regional leader its first piece of current-season evidence.

West Orange has supplied considerably more through two weeks. The Warriors opened with a 28-24 win over Archbishop Hoban, then followed it by overwhelming Horizon 53-0. After beginning the preseason at No. 8 and climbing to No. 4 after Week 1, West Orange now moves into the No. 2 position.

That rise is being driven by two very different victories. West Orange proved it could finish a close game in the opener and then completely control one in Week 2. At 2-0, the Warriors have quickly become Lake Mary’s closest challenger in the regional rankings.

The First Academy Knocks Edgewater Back

The First Academy continued its impressive start by beating Edgewater 21-14, one week after opening with a 58-7 victory over Dr. Phillips.

The Week 2 result was especially important because Edgewater entered the game ranked No. 2 in Central Florida after beating Ocoee 34-6 in the opener. The Royals did not need an indirect comparison to make their case; they beat Edgewater head-to-head.

That loss sends Edgewater down to No. 6. The Eagles are still 1-1 with a convincing win already on the résumé, but The First Academy now owns the result that matters most when comparing the two teams directly.

Seminole’s Rise Continues

Seminole has gone from outside the preseason Power 15 to the top five in only two weeks.

The Seminoles opened with a 26-17 victory over Mountain Vista and followed it by beating Lake Howell 24-7. That moves Seminole to 2-0 and into the No. 5 position after beginning the season at No. 16.

The rise is significant because it has not come from one isolated performance. Seminole has now stacked consecutive wins, giving the FPRI more reason each week to move away from its preseason starting point.

With Lake Mary, West Orange, The First Academy and Seminole all producing positive results, the top half of Central Florida is already much more competitive than it appeared before the season.

Evans Answers in a Big Way

Evans needed a response after losing 31-27 to Lake Nona in Week 1, and the Trojans delivered one of the most decisive wins in the region.

Evans beat Boone 47-13, turning what had been projected as a close matchup into a 34-point victory. The result sends Evans up five positions after entering Week 2 at No. 15.

Boone moves in the opposite direction after opening with a 21-14 victory over Apopka. The Braves now carry a 1-1 record with a quality win and a lopsided loss, while Evans has paired a narrow defeat with one of Central Florida’s strongest Week 2 performances.

Those are exactly the kinds of head-to-head results that begin separating teams once the preseason portion of the ratings starts losing influence.

Ocoee Responds, Dr. Phillips Falls to 0-2

Ocoee also needed a response after its opening 34-6 loss to Edgewater, and the Knights got one in a defensive battle against Dr. Phillips.

Ocoee won 7-3, moving to 1-1 and giving the FPRI a much different second result to evaluate after the difficult opener.

For Dr. Phillips, the first two weeks have gone in the opposite direction. The Panthers opened with the 58-7 loss to The First Academy and are now 0-2 after being held to three points by Ocoee. That is a substantial departure from their preseason position and gives the system two current-season results pulling against the initial baseline.

DeLand Takes Its First Loss, Olympia Gets to 2-0

DeLand’s opening win over Lake Wales was one of the more dramatic results of Week 1, with the Bulldogs surviving 35-34. Week 2 brought a much different challenge, and St. Frances Academy handed DeLand a 49-35 loss.

Olympia, meanwhile, improved to 2-0 by beating Timber Creek 18-7. The Titans had already opened with a 28-6 win over Colonial, and two victories now give them a stronger early résumé than several teams that began the year ahead of them.

That is becoming a recurring theme throughout Central Florida: preseason position matters less with every completed game, particularly when teams begin stacking wins or losses in consecutive weeks.

Week 3 Spotlight: Lake Mary Gets Osceola

Lake Mary gets another significant test Friday when Osceola visits Doug Peters Field at Don T. Reynolds Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The Rams remain No. 1, but Oviedo showed last week how small the margin can be. Lake Mary now gets another opportunity to build on a current-season résumé that consists of one one-point victory.

The other matchup with immediate regional intrigue comes Saturday, when Jones travels to Trojan Field to face Evans at 3 p.m. Jones returns after an open week, while Evans enters with momentum after the 47-13 victory over Boone. With Evans already climbing sharply, another strong performance could create even more movement in the next update.

West Orange, Seminole and Edgewater also have opportunities to strengthen or stabilize their positions in Week 3, while Boone is open and will have to watch the rankings move around it.

Central Florida Is Already Moving Away From the Preseason

After only two weeks, several teams have dramatically changed where they sit in the regional hierarchy.

West Orange has climbed from preseason No. 8 to No. 2. Seminole has moved from No. 16 to No. 5. The First Academy has backed up its opening rout by beating Edgewater head-to-head, while Evans has answered a Week 1 loss with a 34-point win over Boone.

At the same time, Edgewater has fallen from No. 2 to No. 6 after its first loss, Dr. Phillips is 0-2, and Lake Mary remains No. 1 after surviving by a single point in its first game.

That is what the early weeks of the Enhanced FPRI are supposed to reveal. The preseason provides a starting point, but actual results increasingly take control as more games are played.

Central Florida already looks much different than it did two weeks ago, and Week 3 gives several of the region’s highest-rated teams another chance to change it again.
