  1. This game is crazy.  I hate to sound so negative here but I am going to call it like I am clearly seeing it.....Raines is slaughtering BTW in the stat sheet - but only up 10 - 7 at Halftime

.  BTW has 5 (FIVE) turnovers and there only score was a pick 6.  They might have 1 first down in the half alone .

Defensively BTW has 4 (FOUR) Goal Line Stands!   So the BTW Defense is playing great inside the Red Zone , but the Offense is playing horrendous overall.  The play Offensive play calling on Raines is pathetic.  It look's like something that we all drew up in the sand or street when we were 10 years old.  The kicker for Raines made a 25 yarder and PAT but kicks straight on and with his toe.  It looks like he is kicking a 4 square rubber kickball.  Whatever works I guess....

Raines looks like the better overall team but will likely get out-coached in a close one.  With all due respect , neither of these teams look like state champion caliber teams.

I agree with everything you said. Sloppy game for both teams.

    Booker T now up 14-10.

  2. Aside from Columbus, MiamiDade doesn't have any private school powers. Columbus has recently been getting on the map. Like mentioned previously, most of their players are hispanic and very smart. That counts for a lot because they are very disciplined and know their assignments. They do recruit, but mainly for their skill positions. For example, they have a freshman running back named Darren Davis Jr. He was supposed to play at Southridge and even started fall practice there. He ended up at Columbus. Columbus has a good thing going and it's only a matter of time until they break through and win a state title. I think they could become the STA of Dade county, but I don't think they want that distinction of openly recruiting just for the sake of winning.

Last year Booker T went to the other end of the county in Homestead and took Homestead High's QB and WR for their senior seasons. Without those two (Maurice Alexander & Antonio Calloway) BTW probably doesn't win a state title. That being said, ALL the winning programs recruit. Public or private. The public schools just can't make it obvious.

As far as Jacksonville, it's the largest county in the state land wise, so the talent is spread out. I'm sure that plays a big part in why the public schools haven't won a state title in a while, while the private schools don't have anything holding them back from openly recruiting the best talent.

  3. As far as ranking IMG in the national polls, who cares. They aren't the only ones that recruit. Bishop Gorman, Don Bosco, De La Salle, St. John Bosco and many other national powers recruit. It's mainly the private schools since they have no boundaries, but none of them are unbeatable.

I do think AHP was lucky to catch IMG in the first game of the season. It takes time for talent to gel together.

  4. @Miamidade92, who do you got in a Coral Gables @ Columbus rematch in round 2?

As much as Gables dominated the first game, I'm leaning towards Columbus. Coach Merritt and his staff will be ready for the rematch. I think it's a tall order to beat Columbus twice in three weeks. I could be wrong, but I'm leaning towards Columbus.

  5. For the fun of it:

Mandarin vs Oviedo - Oviedo by 7 - QB Nick Carbone is the difference maker

Lake Brantley vs Sandalwood - Brantley by 27, triple option offense too much for Sandalwood which does not see it

Timber Creek vs Apopka - Apopka by 31, TC's offensive strength plays into Apopka's defensive strength

West Orange vs Boone - West Orange by 29 too much fire power for Boone

Dr. Phillips vs Stienbrenner - Phillips by 17, DP. has too much experience and too many weapons

Manatee vs Oak Ridge - Manatee by 21, Manatee pulls away late to win comfortably

Osceola vs Treasure Coast - Osceola by 24, ground game wears out TC

Vero Beach vs Gateway - Vero Beach by 17, Gateway just glad to make the playoffs

Palm Beach Gardens vs Boca Raton - Boca by 2, difficult game to pick; could go either way

Atlantic vs Wellington - Atlantic by 35, this should be a blowout

Deerfield Beach vs Plantation - Deerfield Beach by 7, this should be a good game that could go either way

Flanagan vs Piper - Flangan by 40, Piper does not belong on the same field; Flanagan will take its frustration out on them

American vs Columbus - Columbus by 31, another blowout

Coral Gables vs Hialeah - Coral Gables by 41, Hialeah does not belong on the same field

Belan Jesuit vs Southridge - I will take Southridge by 12, but this could be an interesting game

South Dade vs Southwest - South Dade by 35; this is the sleeper 8A team that could make it to Orlando

Anyone have any insights, particularly on the southern half of the bracket?

I agree with that statement. A lot of people don't know about South Dade. They won state two years ago and missed the playoffs last year despite being 7-3. They play in a tough district and slipped up once against a talented Killian team this year. Other than that game, South Dade has been killing teams this year. I think this year's team is better than the one that one state two years ago. People may think they're a sleeper team because they don't have much championship history in Football, but I would be genuinely shocked if they don't win the 8A title this year.

  6. 1A - Pahokee

2A - Admiral Farragut  (homer pick its probably going to be NFC)

    3A - Trinity Christian for the 3peat (or is it a 4peatP

    4A - Cocoa

    5A - American Heritage Plantation

    6A - Mainland

    7A - Dwyer

    8A - Apopka

4A Either Cocoa or Bolles (Don't count out Booker T. They may be 5-5 but they faced a tough schedule and the team had to grow up quick. I wouldn't be   surprised if they made it to the title game and lost to Bolles)

    6A Central

    7A St. Thomas

    8A South Dade

  7. I agree about Columbus, their coaching is top notch. They aren't blowing out teams like traditional powerhouses, but their defense is suffocating and their offense does enough to get the win.

South Dade looks great this year. Out of Miami-Dade I think it'll come down to Columbus or South Dade. The Columbus-Coral Gables game will tell us a lot about both teams.

  8. The D-line for DeMatha was a wall. They have four D1 players on that line. Central had no chance.

That game reminded me of the game a few years ago when Central played Grayson up in Georgia. Central had Dalvin Cook and Joseph Yearby in the backfield, and they couldn't move the ball against that Grayson D-line. Central still won state that year.

  9. I was hoping Booker T would put up a good fight, but they were overmatched. St. Thomas is loaded and they look like a college team.

St. Thomas's players all look like they live in the gym and they're fast. Booker T's players look thin and fragile. They just have speed, and last night that didn't matter.

I don't see anyone beating St. Thomas this year.

  10. St. Thomas won easily over Dillard 24-0

Carol city over Mater Academy 44-9

    Dwyer beat Miami Northwestern  27-22

Central won easily over Royal Palm Beach  48-6

    Camden county beat Lincoln 48-13

    American Heritage beat IMG 18-7

    Winter Haven beat Columbus 25-24

    Lakeland beat Lake Gibson 27-6

  11. I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but when St. Thomas finally played Northwestern, it was they year when Teddy Bridgewater left and about 7 other division 1 signees.

Now when they agree to play Booker T, Booker T has just lost about 8 division 1 players and their head coach. These games aren't made years in advance, they're made after the football season, so St. Thomas knew it was going to get a watered down version of Booker T.

  12. This may be the best team Central has ever had period. I really am having trouble finding a place of true weakness in this team.

I don't know about that. They don't have a star quarterback like when they had Godfrey and the running backs are unproven. The defense might be the best they've had, but I'm not so sure about the offense.

  13. IMG just lost a 5 star quarterback and now they get another one to transfer in from Louisiana right before the season starts. This is crazy. No wonder they aren't allowed in the playoffs.

I know teams recruit, most winning schools with tradition do, but most schools recruit within their city or town. IMG recruits NATIONALLY.
