I was watching an old game that had announcers, and they claimed, via a 1936 game program, that a 1935 state championship was won by the almighty Lakeland Dreadnaughts, who defeated the Miami Military Institute 26-0. Miami's QB? Knute Rockne Jr. I was able to find a photograph of Rockne Jr. playing for Miami Military, and this NYT article about him playing there.

@nolebull813 do you have record of this game in your archives? I'm sure Great Depression era high school football was just exceptional

This is a great article and find, Longtime Observer. Now, are you sure that you are not remembering this game from personal experience? (Wasn't this your Junior Year In High School?)

Thanks for the clarification as these penalties each happened a couple of times and the ball placement was not the same each time thus the question.  The officials did administer them correctly with the different options you described.  Thanks. One last question.  Recovered fumbles can be advanced in the opposite direction by the defensive team, but does that also apply to a 2-pt. conversion attempt??

No. B, the team on defense, cannot advance a recovered fumble on a try. As soon as team B secures possession on a try, the play ends. You're welcome.

Officiating question for you Jambun82.  On a kickoff that goes out of bounds, is it always placed at the 35-yard line if the penalty is accepted by the receiving team or if it goes out say at the 42 is it placed there?   Also, I thought I read somewhere that holding penalty against the offense is marked back 10 yards from the line of scrimmage..... or is it from the point of the foul??  Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Ray, on a free-kick (kickoff) that goes out-of-bounds untouched by the receiving team, the offended team has four options, 1. Take the ball 25 yards in advance of the kicking team's free-kick line 2. Take the ball 5 yards in advance of where the ball went out out-of-bounds 3. Take the ball on the yard line that the ball went out-of-bounds 4. Have K re-kick with a 5 yard penalty.  On a foul by the offensive team on a running play, the basic spot for penalty enforcement is either the spot of the foul if the foul is beyond the line-of-scrimmage, or the line-of-scrimmage if the foul is behind or at the line-of-scrimmage.

How old are you? either you’re way too old to be here or way too young. No inbetween

I do have another theory But i fear I may be kicked off the board if I say.

Thank you for the compliments, cribboy305! Of course, I will call you out, or any other message board poster, who criticizes highs school football officiating, and you WILL answer my questions!

Jambun, Personal Foul .....No more "french fries" for you !

Dan, since you paid for the last Red Robin meal, maybe it will be my turn to pay at this great restaurant that you should eat at more often. In fact, you can bring your friend DarterBlue2, since he seems to be too scared to talk with me anymore.

I know i'm a little late but lets not act like chaminade did not get the benefit of a early whistle because floyd bounced off them boys and was headed to the houseand i respect central coach for not bringing that up and trying to taint a good game but the refs were to quick on that play they gave chaminade recievers more time to fight for yards just saying that play right there

    What are you talking about?

    You all...

    You all keep complaining....

One the contracts ran out at Gene Cox and DRV PNK

Second, I don't believe DRV PNK was interested in renewing and taking on all nine games.

Third, FHSAA heard a ton of complaints regarding the split weekends. Honestly, going back to one site was needed.

Fourth, Orlando... my understanding is both sides tried, but it comes down to dollars and what is going to make sense for all involved.

A lot of you think the FHSAA can just go pull up to any stadium and play at it, and the stadium will be fine with it. It does not work that way. Logistics are a major thing in all of this, and if all the logistics do not line up, would it make sense to play at said stadium?

And no, I am not a secret member of the FHSAA... I just understand how things work and what the bylaws and policies are without trying to sound off-putting here.

Josh, I know that logic and reason is very much lost on most posters to this message board. This was a great explanation though, and while you justifiably can get frustrated with the whiners, complainers, and naysayers who are never happy with anything, you can always remember that you have a great and appreciative friend/poster in Jambun82. You're welcome, and thank you for all that you do!

I don't think @Jambun82 trolls. To me he's just a strange individual. I must confess, I really don't know how to read him, but would not want him to be part of the crew officiating an Apopka game.

I have been to Apopka High School once. It is a very nice school, not like West Orange, but then again that is the gold standard for schools in Orange County. I look forward to  going back one day. Thank you for the very nice compliments DarterBlue2, and will you admit that Algebra is completely worthless?

I'm a mathematician (masters in applied mathematics) and until the formula is revealed, it can be anything.  A true power index is typically a weighted formula that heavily leans on last years results for the early rankings but these weights effectively go to zero as the season nears the end and there are enough teams that have played each other to have statistical relevance for the current year.  Probably the single biggest measure of power is margin of victory/loss so the FHSAA has really gimped the formula by removing this from the calculation, thus becoming full "elo chess" ranking.  Elo chess ranking works for chess players because there are thousands and thousands of matches where the binary win or loss result becomes statistically relevant.  This does not work well for football because of how few games a season has.  From my observation of last year, a tough district/region is over-rewarded whereas a powerful team from a weak region is severely penalized.  In the end, the most powerful teams generally made the final four so most of the complaint is leaving out deserving teams and taking too many teams from a single district.

    Algebra is completely worthless, correct?

  10. I told this message board what would happen, and I was right as I usually am. This officiating crew was held accountable by being suspended, and the Cocoa AD and Head Coach were given the apology that they deserved. The Tigers were not allotted the victory that they earned and deserved, but this was the best outcome under the rules and the circumstances. I wish that the underlying problems and issues that a situation like this exposes into the open could be discussed, but it cannot be on this message board. Hopefully, this never happens again.

The inability, as reflected in the rules, to appeal flagrant mistakes made by an officiating crew, as cited earlier in this thread. Obviously, overturning the results of a game should only occur in very rare circumstances. And, and a rule allowing  for an appeal could be couched in language reflecting the fact that frivolous appeals shall result in some kind of meaningful penalty on the appellant.  However, to have no right at all to appeal, smacks of the days of Kings and Emperors.

You may feel comfortable in that kind of society. But I don't.

Well, you better find some kind of comfort because there is no chance of that rule and standard ever being changed.
