TALLAHASSEE, Fla – Turning around a 2-7 season to an undefeated start would mean nothing for Godby if the Cougars could not perform in their district. Friday night Godby clashed with Wakulla in a 5A District 2 showdown and picked up a 21-6 win over the War Eagles, improving to 6-0 on the year.
“It’s not that we’re 6-0, it’s that it’s the first district game,” Godby head coach Corey Fuller said. “All the pressure slides to them and Rickards now. Our kids worked hard all offseason leading up to this, they’ve been playing well and you saw the results tonight.”
Early on, neither team could move the ball, each punting on the first two possessions of the game. Late in the first quarter, Godby’s Rasean McKay found Cleveland Blackshear on third and long for a 25-yard pickup to set up the Cougars in plus territory. Jerry Ray capped off the drive with a 26-yard rushing touchdown with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Throughout the game Wakulla pinned Godby inside the 10-yard line, forcing Beto Aguirre to punt from his own end zone several times. Midway through the second, the War Eagles did just that and started their drive on the 37-yard line in plus territory. Jaylon Worsham and Cephus Greene mounted a drive, but Godby made a defensive stance and forced a field goal attempt. Hunter Busen drilled a 35-yard attempt, making the score 7-3 in favor of Godby.
The Cougars responded with a scoring drive of their own. Tony Street kicked off the drive by breaking off a 45-yard gain on the ground. McKay took an end zone shot and was intercepted by Wakulla’s Jeremy Harvey, however, a pass interference call negated the takeaway. From two yards out McKay scored on a quarterback keeper to put Godby up 14-3 heading into halftime.
Godby converted on yet another third and long attempt late in the third quarter, this time for an 11-yard touchdown from McKay to Tyler Pye to go ahead 21-3. This deficit proved to be too much for the War Eagles to come back from. Busen did knock in another field goal to cut the deficit to 15, a two-possession game with a two-point conversion, but Wakulla was unable to capitalize on opportunities in the red zone.
On the final play of the game, Worsham took an end zone shot and was intercepted by Martery Brown as time expired.
Wakulla (4-2) will look to bounce back on Thursday against Leon (0-5). As for the district-leading Goby Cougars (6-0), they will have a week off before a huge game against Rickards (5-0) that will have huge playoff implications.
