  1. I believe that was the Gainesville game. They had a downpour on a Thursday night game and then moved the game to Friday night, but in Lake City so that the game could be played in the same week and not to disrupt the schedules. Additionally, I believe they allowed this year's game to go back to Gainesville.
  2. There are times that I gladly stand with the FHSAA, but this isn't one of them. Pay them the $10 per game, no ref is getting rich off it. Individually, the ref makes maybe $200 more a year if they work every JV and Varsity. For a school, it costs less than a $1000. The FHSAA is going to spend more on travel stipends to cover the refs than the increase would be. https://www.news-press.com/story/sports/high-school/football/2019/08/12/fhsaa-revokes-sanction-lee-county-officials/1987151001/
  3. While this is is not the thread for my question, I wonder how much consistency with the assistant coaches matters versus the consistency with the head coach. For example, if we went and looked at one of the teams on the list that has had 2-3 coaches, would we notice that the assistant coaches are the same from year to year even as the head coach changes. If we looked at a struggling school, would we fine that not only do the head coaches consistently change, but the assistants as well. Lots of research shows that struggling schools have constant teacher turnover. I wonder if the same would be true for struggling football programs.

  5. I will always believe that school districts should fund the basics of extra curriculars. Uniforms, common sense travel, referees, playing fields, equipment, and security. If not, don't offer the sport.
  6. They are asking for $10 more per game for 8 officials a game for maybe 5 varsity and 4 JV home games per school? So $720 for the year per school? If our counties can't afford that, please shutter the programs.
  7. To pad my stats... I am sure somebody will know, but why are they South Sumter High School? Was there a northern, eastern, western, or central in the past? Why not just Sumter County High School or Sumter High School? I actually don't know the answer, just curious.
  8. Ed White HS - Dee Webb/UF Raines - Lito Sheppard/UF Raines - Brian Dawkins/Clemson
  9. Dwyer - Matt Elam UF/Baltimore? I think his brother Abram (Abe) Elam (Cardinal Newman-West Palm Beach, '00) was actually a better professional (104 games across 7 seasons), but Matt was a much bigger name out of high school. Abram did play at Notre Dame and eventually found his way to Kent State. Kaiir Elam, class of 2019, signed with UF, is Abram's son.
  10. Chris Collinsworth as a WR Dante Culpepper Teddy Bridgewater
  11. Glad to see them doing this. Always surprised that this doesn't happen more often. I stand by the fact that I think Week 1, the local pro sports teams should offer up their stadiums for free for the experience. https://www.news4jax.com/sports/inaugural-bold-city-showcase-features-3-football-games-to-open-season
  12. Hardee is the 27th ranked county in terms of teacher salaries, just behind St. Johns County and $2,000 less than the state average.

  14. Nothing new, we have seen a similar article every 2 years or so. I was talking to a teacher/coach who is involved with their union. The district offered a 10% increase in stipends and the union rejected it because they wanted the money to go to teacher salaries and not stipends. But yes, low coach pay all around. Miami-Dade and Broward being two of the worst surprises me. https://www.news4jax.com/sports/sad-state-of-pay-florida-high-school-coaches-earn-little-compared-to-others
  15. Where is Craig Erickson - Cardinal Newman C/O 87, national championship winner with Miami (as a backup during 87 season) and again as starting QB during the 89 season. Won the Johnny Unitas Award. Drafted by Eagles and then Tampa. Had maybe 2 good seasons with Bucs and then Bucs drafted Trent Dilfer to replace him.
  16. The bigger problem (in the past) will be that for the Georgia school the game will count as part of their regular season, but for Columbia it will not. So Columbia has no reason to try and win. I will say that Coach Allen of Columbia will probably allow a full game, except for maybe the kicking game, but that is a guess.
  17. Bishop Kenny- John Wofford? He played for an ACC team, Wake, Duke? Plant Aaron Murray or Robert Marve Stephen Garcia was Jefferson?
  18. The FHSAA literally told them this would happen, the Republican led Legislature led by a couple of pissed off Lakeland politicians did this. Calling BS that the state legislature only wanted it for academic reasons, they talked about the fact that we don't stop a kid from moving/participating if they are in band or art so why sports. This Florida Republican led state legislature does not care about public schools.
  19. Depends on the goals of the district, gotta get in certain amount of minutes/days. If the goal is to be done before Winter Break and you have days like Labor Day, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Veteran's Day, Wednesday before Thanksgiving (some districts give off the whole week now), than you add in a couple of extra days at the beginning. Also makes it not so bad for the kids where you ease them into the year. One school I know of used to have freshmen come in on Monday and Tuesday for a half day. Sophomores-Seniors would come in on Wed-Thursday for a half day and everybody comes in on Friday that way freshmen could find their way without the scary upperclassmen.
  20. It is interesting though as soon as these players are done (they try to lose the weight) and probably have help at their colleges, How many of these high school kids swell to 270+ and then have a hard time losing it when they don't go to colleges. https://missoulian.com/sports/college/montana/heavy-burden-ex-griz-linemen-focus-on-health-weight-loss/article_3fdd0a80-08ba-5b6f-b69a-2f6c6caa43c8.html
  21. Good reminder of the precautions that coaches and athletic departments need to take in order to keep players safe. https://www.gainesville.com/news/20190712/playing-safe-to-beat-heat
