  1. How the hell does every freaking thread become about some podunk community in North Florida... for the love of god, form your own thread and talk about them there. Otherwise, get the hell off this thread. Or at least contribute to a meaningful conversation. Repeating ad nauseam that your school is the best with zero proof. If you want to be the best, tell your principal/ad/coach/school board to stop ducking the competition that they should actually be in and go and play in it. Otherwise, except your participation trophy and shut up.

  8. I would note that some schools are going to change in size, due to the emergence of new schools. Nease (Ponte Vedra) for example will probably not have 3110 when Fall of 2021 rolls around due to the opening of a new school. The FHSAA knows this and takes that in account. I am only posting these so that we get a general idea of where your school is based on population and football schools (I did football schools that played district football (non-independent) in 2019, so if a new school opened in 2020 or started playing football in 2020, they are not included). So again take this with a grain of salt. 5A-8A have a range of 80-81 teams per class 2A-4A have a range of 40-42 teams per class. 1A has a range of 37 teams if all teams are invited back despite being over the limit, 35 if they are kicked out and not replaced and 36 if Taylor (Pierson) is let back in to 1A. 8A (possible) 1 Cypress Bay (Weston) 4662 2 Seminole (Sanford) 4294 3 Windermere 4213 4 Dr. Phillips (Orlando) 3596 5 Freedom (Orlando) 3570 6 Timber Creek (Orlando) 3561 7 Western (Davie) 3556 8 John I. 10. Sigh, I asked for someone...Nevermind. Weren't they loaded last year and lost to a team with 1/3 the number of students Also if you had any sense of geography you would understand that Bolles and Madison would both be in the North and unable to meet in championship
  11. https://floridahsfootball.com/2021/03/08/fhsaa-board-of-directors-votes-for-one-year-reclassification-plan-during-special-meeting/?fbclid=IwAR3Sf8LvWyxaTLn1Yp218-d0Ig_5kZwI8atPhIA7olCUbIVriXMhhVGgFu4#.YEa8iFNOmDZ Someone with better reading comprehension skills than me... so basically the FHSAA are using the 2020 numbers (which were effected by COVID) for one year... so we will reclassify and redistrict but only for one year... am I understanding that correctly?
  12. I still don't understand this reasoning from the FHSAA... Schools are still doing counts whether online or in person. Why not compare the current numbers to previous years numbers and see how radically they are off. If most schools are within 10% of their numbers (assuming no changes caused by opening of new schools) use the numbers and re-classify. Additionally, this is why having classifications based solely on population is idiotic. Use the success and failures of programs to promote and relegate teams and perfect school population counts matter less. Simple example, St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park) just won their 10th straight state championship in girls soccer, finished the season 18-0, gave up 5 goals all season and during the regular season beat the 7A state champion 2-1. What is the point of them staying at 2A? They are obviously better, move their butts up in classification until they face a challenge.
  13. As I have stated a million times, the real answer to all the problems is a promotion/relegation system that starts with size, but allows recent success/failure to be a factor in moving schools up and down. On a logistics note: the FHSAA always basis it on the Fall numbers right? So we should be looking at the Fall 2020 numbers?
  14. Laz, do you think this is something that D2/D3/NAIA schools could latch onto long term? We have seen several professional spring football leagues (AAFL, XFL, Arena) that come and gone over the years, but there always seems to be some interest in the sport continuing past the Super Bowl. Could moving to spring for these D2/D3 schools be a way to get some marketability of their programs/some limited TV revenue? Or will D1 College Basketball/Baseball/Softball always trump lower division football?
  15. Your appreciation of coaches does not put food on the table for their families. At some point that is a consideration, again, I am not advocating Texas or Georgia type money. I am advocating for the same hourly rate that the governor and state legislature think that teachers should be making at a minimum and taking hourly rate and applying it to the job that coaches do . I am not even advocating for winter/spring/summer payment, but simply just fall payment. You want mentors to stay, I agree, but I also don't think they should have to take a vow of poverty in order to do it.
  16. I agree, but the arguments I hear on why we don't coaches and sponsors more always surprises me. As the pittance that they receive is ok, but I do feel that coaches are to blame for this as well. They aren't organized. They don't press their pay concerns and explain it big picture. That after school programs (sports and clubs) are programs that kids off the streets and under somebody's supervision until the late hours. Why wouldn't a community want that? Kids who are involved in two or more extracurriculars are more likely to graduate. These organizations are some of your drop out prevention programs. And no, not every kid who plays a sport is going to win a championship or earn a scholarship and that is okay. Sports have other uses than rings and scholarships. They are about educating and serving the whole student and too many of our districts have forgotten that.
  17. I think a lot of people misunderstand what it is to be a coach (and teacher) in today's world. The expectations of how much time and effort that are put in to the field, the level of commitment, the level of expertise that is demanded is no longer a joke. You can't just be a guy who played back in the day. You have to be year-round committed when a school has dreams of championships. Are you willing to do that for $4,200-6,000? Are you willing to have a little less commitment and do that for $2,500-3,000 as an assistant? I will say this a million times over, but school districts are doing a disservice to their schools, when they don't find ways to increase the compensation for coaches. Do I know the magic number? No, but schools are losing coaches at alarming numbers. The program isn't just the head coach, but the assistants as well. Most of these assistant coaches can work at Lowe's for half the time and make more money and insurance than they get as coaches. Schools are being hard pressed to put great teachers in the classroom (as they should), but it is hard to find that great teacher and person who is willing to coach. If you think about an average school, they have maybe ~100 teachers on campus, you have 8-10 coaching spots (including head coach). Is the principal/school board going to go out of their way to add those coaches on to their faculty and not hurt school academics? Add in volleyball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, track, cross country, cheerleading... and all of a sudden those 8-10 spots become easier to fill, but at a higher cost that some assistants won't make the cut. Quick math... Governor DeSantis made it a goal of starting pay for teachers at 47.5K. Teachers are generally paid for 190 days a year at 7.5 a day. Quick math says the hourly wage works out to $33.33 as teacher. If we assume that a minimum coaches work 2.5 hours a day (as coaches), 6 days a week, 14 weeks (10 games, 1 off week, 1 kickoff classic, and 2 weeks preseason) that same math say 7K should be the minimum salary. Find me the Florida district that pays a coach 7K, just as a coach (not an administrator). I know the push back from average teachers would be, why pay so much for a coach if you can't pay teachers a decent wage. I would generally agree, but how much are we really talking about here. Let's use Duval County, they have 16 High Schools and if we make some basic assumptions (1 HC, 9 Assistants for football, 1 HC and 3 Assistants (JV and Varsity) for team sports, and a Head Coach and Assistant for non-team sports at the current rate in Duval for over $2 million (assuming every school has all teams and fills all coaching spots). Duval County has a total budget of 1.6 billion. The 2 million is a little over .11% of the entire budget. It should be really easy to increase that amount overall.
  18. Governor DeSantis said canceling schools (and thus sports) was a mistake last Spring. Few school districts are going to exercise their local control to shut down schools. Unless, this thing comes and kills thousands of students (which honestly it hasn't by now). I don't think you will see the FHSAA cancel anything (they may delay or postpone or forfeit games), but everything will continue as normal.
  19. Cardinal Newman Coach Dan Burack Resigns https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story/sports/high-school/football/2021/01/04/cardinal-newman-high-school-football-coach-dan-burack-resigns-after-one-year/4132089001/ Jack Daniels (former Dwyer Head Football Coach) will be new Head Coach. This will be Cardinal Newman's 3rd Coach in 3 Years. I am going to take this as a sign as Cardinal Newman no longer wants to be just above average and wants to compete for championships.
  20. One of the simplest quotes, but definitely one of my favorites, with the fire storm that came from that article.
  21. This is one of the reasons why on another thread, I dislike the idea of academies (or at least the separation of extra curriculars from school). Many of the kids that we are talking about here are not and would not get a chance at these academies (forgetting the financial aspects). They aren't the right size. High School coaches have to play with what they have. You can't make them grow 3 inches. So they work around and have to coach kids up. My favorite part of high school/college sports is seeing a team grow. A team goes from below average to average to good to great. A lot of that has to do with good coaching at both the head coach and position coach level.
  22. Very rarely is an upper middle class school only good at one sport. For various reasons, I have a general dislike of that school. In Cross Country, the Boys team is consistently in the top 5 in their class (one runner-up). The Girls teams have won 2 in their class (not as good recently). In Swimming, Boys were runner-up recently and girls runner-up 3 times and a state championship. In Golf, Boys have won a state championship and 3 individual championships and in girls one team runner-up. In Tennis, Boys have won a state championship and a runner-up. In Girls Volleyball, one state runner-up and 16 playoff appearances since 2000. In Basketball, boys have been sporadically 1 and dones in the playoffs. Girls have been in the Final Four, 4 times. In soccer, girls have won one and runner-up once. In baseball, state runner-up once, with lots of one and dones (not consistent). In softball, 2 state championships In girls lacrosse, a state runner-up and state championship. We have schools that could only wish they had a tenth of this much success in the last 20 years. This is all to say, you don't succeed in all of these sports over such a long period of time without the family backing. When Coach Sutherland eventually retires, Bartram Trail's success will live on after him. It might have a transition moment, but it will be fine.
  23. I think @ColumbiaHighFan2017classhits it on the head. I will add one more thing as well. Money matters: you are talking about upper middle class families, a school with a free and reduced lunch rate of 7% with high academic scores. Parents are going to put the money into training/camps/clinics, kids don't have to focus on school or sports or job. They can do sports, get decent grades and have parents provide everything else. Better academics gives principals better flexibility in who they hirer. They can hire another on-campus football coach. A growing area allows football coaches to get staff positions at local elementary and middle schools as PE teachers (instead of a more rigorous math, English, science, or social studies).
  24. King's Academy? Wakulla? Hamilton County?
  25. To be fair, last week's games were more akin to Regional Semi-finals than Regional Finals.
