Many Americans probably look at sumo wrestling as "bizarre." Well, many foreigners think are linemen are bizarre. Other than sumo and some of the weightlifting super-heavies, how many obese athletes do we see competing around the world?
No place for them in most sports. In 2006 or 2007, I forget which year, Orlando Edgewater had four offensive linemen above 300 lbs and a fifth in the 290s. I thought this was just bizarre as in the 1980s this would have been huge for an NFL line let alone high school ...

Apopka travels to Municipal Stadium on Friday, August 17, 2018 for a return KOC with the Mainland Bucs. I expect this to be a very good game.

If 2 schools face off in every sport are they rivals?
For it to be a true rivalry, the games need to be competitive and the fans have to develop a "dislike" for the other guys.
You would think in most situations where they face off in multiple sports a rivalry would develop. It's usually but not always the case.

That kid Calijah Kancey is underrated by the recruiting services IMO. Kid is a beast. #13.

I agree with you. He flies to the ball and this disrupts quarterbacks and the running backs.
He reminds me of some of the Wekiva Defensive Linemen. Is he a rising senior or junior?

Yeah if they could get a consistent passing game they will be dangerous. They will Miss Atwell's speed though.
Atwell was a unique type of QB. This kid is more in the mold of a Jacory Harris. Either can work. The coaches just have to run their offensive plays based on what they have.

Sad thing is neither school has really been successful
I know. Heritage has shown sparks from time to time, but is average at best. Bayside had one good team in its existence. But a few players here and a few there and that can make a world of difference. Plus, with Cocoa's success, a few may have made the 18 mile trip north to Cocoa.

I wish i knew what happened to Palm Bay
Used to be one of the elite teams but they haven't been at that level for quite a few years
They built two new high schools, Heritage and Bayside, that both drew students from their preexisting boundaries. That seriously depleted their talent pool. So even though they still have the same head coach (correct me if I am wrong on this), who is an excellent coach, they have not been able to compete without the talent.

So Gainesville got crushed
It looks that way. West Orange had two really good receivers last year that were underclassmen. Add a good QB, and it makes their offense very potent. Although only four teams, the district with West Orange, Apopka and Wekiva is a very strong one. It is possible a very good team many not make the playoffs or three teams may make it from this district. We will see as the season progresses.

Saw on scorestream that West Orange won 45-7
Even though they listed it as a basketball game it was listed as playing last Friday at 7 which was the scheduled time for the Spring game so it's safe to assume someone just labeled it wrong on the app
Anyone know how this game played out or what the score was for the starters?
I can give you the score. After three quarters of Varsity, West Orange 35-7 over Gainesville. One quarter of JV WO 10-0 over Gainesville.
I had planned to go to this game. But after the bad experience with the cost of parking from the Wekiva game which was also played at WO, I decided to stay home. So my knowledge of the score is what I got from the Orlando Sentinel.
As a mark of protest, the only game I will attend at WO this upcoming season is the District matchup with Apopka.

Calling BS on the topic. Race/[segregation- went out in 1971] (wtf???) has ZERO influence on whether a team is successful or not. Racist bovine scatter. Specify, kindly, your reasoning for this Citizens Council topic.
Actually, like it or not it does. We may wish things to be different, but the stats are the stats. And, despite the fact that segregation went out in 1971, many schools and school districts are de facto segregated.
It is what it is.

This ranking includes Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Volusia and Flagler counties.
Since Brevard is not included, I’ll include my top teams from there as well: Cocoa, Rockledge, Viera, Palm Bay
Central Florida Rankings

- Dr. Phillips
- Apopka
- Seminole
- Mainland
- Osceola

- Flagler Palm Coast
Other ls to watch:
Lake Mary
Spruce Creek
Timber Creek

This is a solid list. I really have no significant issues with the rankings.

Who was that first QB for MNW? Looked very promising. #11 I think.
Just looked at the video. You are right. He is a good passer.

Mainland is really Central Florida. Regarding the actual rankings, I don't see how Spruce Creek gets ranked ahead of Lee and Bolles unless those two teams are seriously down. And, like Mainland, Spruce Creek should be Central Florida, and is no way no how better than Mainland!

Also created opportunities for South Dade, Southridge, and Columbus, who now did not have to compete against those teams to win the region
Yes, no doubt. You could also throw Coral Gables in there too, though they have not made it to a final yet, as well as some of the Broward County public schools who now also have a better chance of a deep run.

Americans have turned many pro athletic events into freak shows...football, basketball, baseball, bodybuilding, pro wrestling, mma. The percentage of the mainstream population that can realistically compete at the higher levels has been drastically reduced.
I agree. And, in baseball, it is not clear to me that the extra size makes for a better player. You may hit more home runs, but you sacrifice some other necessary skills.
With respect to basketball, unless they changed the rules and nature of the game considerably, it was always going to be a freak show from the get go.

6A state finals in the last decade...really opened things up for central FL when they moved up to 8A
01 Northwestern v Apopka
02 Norland v Edgewater
03 Carol City v Edgewater
06 Northwestern v Lake Brantley
07 Northwestern v Boone
08 Northwestern v Seminole
10 Central v Dr Phillips
Agreed, that was huge for the Orlando area. We only won two of those seven games above.
-
The above pretty much explains why it is a relative handful of Dade public school teams that dominate football there. And why the Orlando area probably has a slight edge in 8A at the moment. Overall, schools here are less segregated than in Dade County for sure. Curiously, though, the majority Hispanic schools here (more than 60% of the population) have the same issues with respect to consistently doing poorly in high school football in this area. This certainly has a lot to do with why schools like Cypress Creek, Colonial, Poinciana, etc., do poorly and seldom if ever have winning seasons.

I have some Mexican friends who are smaller in stature. They just cannot relate to playing football when they see 6'4", 300-pound guys on the field. That is one nice thing about soccer..it allows for people of various shapes/sizes to play.
I am sure many are good athletes, too. But they don't have the size. So football is not seen as an option. In soccer you could be as short as 5ft 5in or as tall as 6ft 5in, if you have the requisite skills, there is a place for you on the team provided you don't weigh less than 130 lbs or more than 230 lbs. In short it is a more democratic game for the majority of humans.

Also if someone wants me to do a rating for a specific team let me know but I wasn't going to do it for every team, i only did enough so you all can get a general feel for the pressure on certain programs opposed to others to win a championship
If there's any you all want me to do let me know
How did you come up with your points ranking? Some of the teams you listed suck and some are decent to very good most years.

No, in 2000 when Palm Bay beat you something like 9-6 in the final. In 2001, Miami Northwestern beat you in the semifinal and Apopka beat them in the finals.

The fact that Carol city Norland and northwestern is in 6a is very odd to me but 3 of them was once in 8a
I guess school enrollment in those areas must have dropped big time. The cutoff for the large class has not changed much over the years.

That's probably because Gainesville is more competitive. If you are going to win easily year after year, it is hard to be fired up.
