Of course that is your answer. That tells me all that I need to know.

Called back FOUR TDS on Northwestern, every play that Northwestern had it was a penalty thrown......
That did NOT answer my question.

He was probably the white hat in the game.
We don't use the term "White Hat" anymore, it is to be known strictly as the Referee from now on.

I gotta say, from my perspective, the situations at Viera and Land O Lakes are very different. Per the linked article, the LOL situation involved a locker room fight between two freshman players on the JV team. The article also mentioned that some of the players in the locker room whipped out their phones and started recording the fight. Wow, there's a shocker.
Per the article: "On Tuesday, the district chose to cancel all games and practices indefinitely while they investigate the situation, meaning the JV and varsity's season kick off games against River Ridge High School this week, won't be happening." That, in my opinion, is an overreaction by the District. Unless there is significantly more to this story, this matter should have been handled internally by the coaches -- suspending the two JV players involved in the fight, if necessary, and perhaps a "team conditioning penalty" for stupidity (taking/sharing the videos). Suspending varsity activities (causing the cancellation of a game) is way too excessive.
I applaud those parents of Land O'Lakes High School Football players, and the players themselves, for standing up and letting their voices be heard to the Pasco County School Board. These Public School Taxpayer-Supported Public Servants need to be reminded who they work for. I have been told that Viera's football team is now practicing, so that is a step in the right direction.

I somewhat disagree. There is a lesson to be learned here. 1. Life isn't always fair; 2. Your actions effects others for good or bad; 3. Even if not involved, if you knew and said or did nothing you are complicit; 4. This is supposed to be a team and if one fails or does wrong the whole team did. The military has this philosophy and for good reason. Ultimately sports like football should be about teaching life lessons, not the going got hard so time to bail out.
Sorry, I don't mean to preach but I believe Viera's admin did the right thing here given the circumstances.
The Viera Admin. did not make this decision, the Brevard County School Board did.

I completely disagree with this but it is a separate topic. In this case, innocent kids should have the right to transfer if their season is cancelled but the smarter thing to do is to not cancel the season.
I consider them linked, PinellasFB.

The biggest problem I see right now is the time factor. According to the various articles, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation. Such investigations rarely are completed in short order (there's that whole "due process" thing). But I suspect football could continue while that investigation is taking place.
However, the Superintendent of the Brevard County School Board "temporarily suspended all football operations" at Viera. That suggests to me that the school board will be conducting some sort of review and possibly will have to have a meeting before football operations can resume. How long will this take? How much practice time can a team afford to miss? Once they receive the green light to start up again, assuming the light does indeed turn green, how many practices would they need to have before a game could be played?
Viera is supposed to play South Fork this Friday night, followed by Satellite and Rockledge. Viera's not scheduled to play their first district game until 9/29. It wouldn't surprise me if the school board investigation takes a few weeks and Viera is forced to forfeit their first three games. But, if they can get back on the field in time for district play, at least the season will be salvaged for those players who are allowed to continue playing.
That is still not good enough in my view. It is some timing that proposed property tax bills have been mailed out in Volusia County, that makes it always a great time to remember just who these public school employees work for and who the real bosses are. Thankfully, Florida is a state that holds these taxpayer-funded public servants accountable.

Holding calls are often highly subjective. They are also called MUCH more frequently at the high school level compared to college and the pros. It's unclear how much of that is a result of officials at the higher levels trying to make the game more fan and TV friendly by not having so many stoppages for penalties. Certainly, the worst part of watching high school games-by far!- is all of the stoppages and delays caused by officials. If you watch the college and pro versions, you can often see plays that would be called holding by officials at the high school level who are less qualified. My guess is that we have a lot of small-minded officials who couldn't care less about the fans viewing experience, and just want to be the center of attention by stopping the game frequently.
In around the 15 years of visiting and reading message board posts about Florida High School Football, this is the absolute worst post that I have ever read by far. The ABSOLUTE WORST!

Watched many a game at South County Stadium, and surprised at the lack of holding calls that are never made against Treasure Coast. Happens to Vero and it happened to Apopka too...both teams have been strong enough to overcome the lack of calls. Plenty of phantom calls also...
What makes you convinced that holding fouls are not being penalized, but occurring on any particular play? Do you have specific examples? Also, could you explain what "phantom calls" you believe are being penalized, but not occurring?

SportsFan, you and I both know that you are 100% correct. However, it is hard for some people to see this with their preconceived notions.

I just hate punishing an entire team and school for a few players acts. If it was coercion, then suspend the violators but not the whole team.
You could just imagine being a player who is completely innocent, now being punished with no games to play though no fault of their own. If I was a parent of such a player, I would make my voice heard in that meeting that is coming up. This is why unlimited transfers for players for any reason at all, not questions asked, nobody else'e business is the RIGHT idea for Florida High School Football.

Crowds have been declining for decades even before the transfer rules
I agree with this SportsFan. This has been a reality of Florida High School Football for at least the last 25 years. "Transfer rules" have nothing to do with lack of attendance at games at all.

What do you mean by "home cooking" LongtimeVero?

Now I'm confused. I don't know how the Orlando Sentinel got brought into this discussion or what WDW and the DeVos family have to do with the topic I raised. I referenced an article that I ran across on Yahoo's website, that originally appeared on Insider (formerly, Business Insider), a multi-national financial and business news website.
I made it a point not to get political or even offer my opinion on the new law. However, I know we have a few coaches who visit this site from time-to-time (Beck, for example) and I was simply looking for clarification or consensus whether this new law was something that they needed to be aware of.
Personally, I would hate to see a good coach get in trouble simply for calling a kid something other than his legal name.
You're confused Pinstripes, what else is new.

Just a timely reminder that, in many respects, FHSAA's hands are tied on this issue. The state legislature has enacted laws that essentially keep the FHSAA from restricting transfers. Any efforts that the FHSAA might make to hinder or delay free transfer for all students (including athletes) - such as sitting out for one year or examining the intent of the move - likely would jeopardize the FHSAA's already fragile relationship with its primary funding source (i.e., the State). And without getting all political here, if you have state leadership that has shown a willingness to take on multi-million dollar companies over philosophical issues, is there any doubt they would be willing to pull the plug on the FHSAA completely should the FHSAA ignore the state mandates on transferring? I don't think so.
So, most everyone agrees we've got a problem. How can the FHSAA step in and solve the problem without putting its very corporate life in danger? Tweaking the classifications (numbers/sizes/etc.) might be a start, but that won't solve the transfer issue in my opinion. What can be done?
Not to get political, but of course you infuse politics like you always do, Pinstripes.

OK, time for someone to cue up the Allen Iverson clip regarding "practice."
Your education continues Pinstripes. Have you learned something this time? May I suggest thinking before spouting off next time, Pinstripes.
Commenting on High School Football Officiating.

The tired and old "tradition" of posters to the message board critiquing and commenting on the officiating has reared its ugly head already in week 1. Anybody who posts on a game that he/she attended or watched, and makes comments such as "the refs sucked" or "the refs cheated one team out of a win" should have the common decency to expand on these "observations" when asked to. If not, then please refrain from commenting on the officiating at all.
