  1. Some quick thoughts: 1A: Nobody will really care, but the expansion to 6 teams for 1A is way too much. A 2-5 Fort White is on the verge of making the playoffs. No reason fr that. Madison County, even with 2 losses, still is 2nd in the Classification for RPI and #1 in Region. Pahokee's OWP keeps them having a shot at the playoffs. They still need some wins. 3A Trinity Christian (Jax) sits at the #6 seed. Imagine being the #3 seed and seeing that waiting for you. At the same, TC (Jax) is only .004 away from Wolfson (Jax) overtaking them. This will be a good test of scheduling vs winning games. King's Academy in danger of not making playoffs. I suggested at the beginning of the year that it would be hard to replace all the seniors they lost. 4A Gadsden County might make the playoffs again (I did call them the team that would be most improved after going winless last year) 4A Region 1 is really bad. Miami Carol City still holding onto a spot.

    newest rpi?

Stupid question, but the final RPI that determines seeding and playoffs will be released on Saturday or Sunday?
  7. Jacksonville Andrew Jackson has had a huge downfall from 2008 or 2009. I don't think they have had a winning record since then.
  8. https://deadspin.com/high-school-football-player-forced-to-tackle-teammate-r-1839010029 Yeah it's California... but we all have these moments, luckily this wasn't in the playoffs or something serious, just a game. But how crazy that you had to tackle your own teammate.
  9. It is why trying to rank teams when there is a playoff makes zero sense. I will never understand why the NCAA does rankings for sports like basketball or baseball when rankings determine nothing. Why do we care in season who is elite, average, or poor? Play your schedule, win games, make the playoffs and win championships. IF we are going to talk elite/average/poor, then allow a promotion and relegation system that truly allows elite to play elite and poor to play poor.
  10. Aren't you being a little harsh on a 5-1 team in regards to Apopka? They are replacing a legendary coach for the school. As for Mandarin, did anybody really expect them to continue their improbable run? I mean them winning last year seemed fluky even with a great QB. Mandarin is not a traditional power by any means. Let me pull the PAC12 argument out, maybe we just have greater parity, one of the complaints that we have had in the past is that we knew who was going to win state championships before the season even started, maybe that isn't true. Maybe that is good for the sport as a whole.
  11. Does anybody know what the result of the game was? Twitter, Florida Scoreboard seems quiet if it was cancelled or if it was played.
  12. ColumbiaFan, You wanna talk about it? It is only halftime as I post this...
  13. Wouldn't they have hosted a first round game under any system as a district champion? I mean the original system of district winner/runner-up they still are hosting a first round game and maybe a 2nd depending on the year. So how is this system different? Now, if a 5-4 Mainland team gets in the playoffs as a #8 seed then you might have a better example of why this system isn't better.
  14. badbird, Have you ever see the college basketball RPIs when they used to try and figure out who was going to be in the Tournament. The RPI always has those small flukes. What I would say is that one game is a snapshot, but the RPI measures a season. I get what your concerns are and yes, I have concerns, but again at the end of the season let's see what teams should be in and don't get in and what teams are in and shouldn't. How many times in the old winner/runner-up, did we look at a runner-up and question their inclusion vs a 3rd or 4th in a stacked district. As for actual seeding, I don't care. I didn't mind the old system of alternating home/away based on the top/bottom of the bracket. The reality is that if your team is 3rd seed, you get to host a first round game just like the old system and you go on the road for the other two. This is very similar to the old system. I get why you would do 32 teams because that way they are automatically in the playoffs, but then there is no incentive to try because they automatically make the playoffs. HWY, I would suggest that while many programs have ups and downs, the ones that would move down are going to be teams that are spiraling down whether due to the fact they don't have the population/talent/coaches/culture at the school to compete. A simple example would be schools like Suncoast (Riveria Beach), Stanton (Jax), Paxon (Jax). These are schools that consistently due to being IB/College Prep magnet-only schools (with small zones) do gain the population to compete against schools their own size. So why not move them down until they are competitive. At the time , a school like American Heritage (Delray Beach) had a couple of down years, but generally is a successful program. Could they play at the 8A level, no! They could probably compete at a 4A and 5A level and hold their own. My process would be slow and only affect the top 10 and bottom 10 in each class. The teams on the bottom of a classification are teams that are consistently 0-10, 1-9, 2-8. They obviously can't compete, so move them down. A school like University Christian (2A) is a good squad and move up from 2A to 3A. Could they win at 3A, probably. Could they compete at 4A, probably, but I wouldn't suggest they could win it. For a team to move from 2A to 8A, it would take nearly 12 years (2 years at each classification).
  15. This system doesn't reward teams for playing an impossible schedule, it rewards you for playing a tough schedule. Trinity Christian and Pahokee played way too up on their schedule which is why they are sitting on the bubbles of making the playoff. You gotta be able to win most of the games that you schedule and if you can't then getting into the playoffs shouldn't happen. Remember, people used to complain about 3 team districts because a team could be 1-9 and still make the playoffs as a runner-up. You can't turn around and say a team with a losing record should make the playoffs (even if it is a tough schedule).
  16. As a person who thinks the old old system (district champs/runner ups) was fine (just increase every district up to 6 teams and put 96 teams in the classes and reduce a class). I also think relegation/promotion are the real long term key to making sure teams are consistently facing competitive opponents. I will continue to say let the current system play out before we get to bent out of shape. In week 7, we still have lots of football to play that can alter who is on top and bottom. I expect next year, the FHSAA will release the results even one week later because of how much movement can happen in 4 weeks.
  17. Blake (Tampa) - 1969 Miami Beach - 1974 Pompano Beach - 1976 Wolfson (Jacksonville) - 1978 St. Cloud - 1980 Hialeah - 1981 Forest Hill (West Palm Beach) - 1985 Titusville - 1988 John I Leonard (Greenacres) - 1989 North Miami - 1991 Osceola (Seminole) - 1993 Miami Springs - 1993 Eau Gallie (Melbourne) - 1995 Key West - 1995 Atlantic (Port Orange) - 1996 Okeechobee - 1996 Lake Howell (Winter Park) - 1996 Terry Parker (Jacksonville) - 1996 American (Hialeah) - 1997 Hernando (Brooksville) - 1997
  18. I am pretty sure I railed against the playoff points and the RPI and was told that I was too old fashioned, this new system would reward people for playing tough opponents. The best teams would get in. Now, the season isn't over, and the games aren't finalized, but I don't think this is any better than the old system so far.
  19. Pahokee is not getting in. They maybe go 2-2 over the next 4 and that is a big time maybe. I said it at the beginning of the season that Pahokee was going to have the same thing happen to them that happened to BTW (Miami) a couple of seasons ago. The schedule is too tough and you lose one too many games.
  20. Just remember this is a snapshot, lots of games still to play.
  21. Pompano Beach - 1976 St. Cloud - 1980 Still 2 before them.
  22. Not sure if we asked this question or not, Of the following teams with at least 1 playoff victory, which team has the longest current drought between their last victory in the playoffs and today? American (Hialeah) - Atlantic (Port Orange) - Blake (Tampa) - Eau Gallie (Melbourne) - Forest Hill (West Palm Beach) - Hernando (Brooksville) - Hialeah - John I Leonard (Greenacres) - Key West - Lake Howell (Winter Park) - Miami Beach - Miami Springs - North Miami - Okeechobee - Osceola (Seminole) - Pompano Beach - St. Cloud - Terry Parker (Jacksonville) - Titusville - Wolfson (Jacksonville) -
  23. So if Columbia is 3rd or 4th would you be upset?
  24. Anybody think there will be surprises regarding a team being lower/higher than you think they should be. I will simply note to everyone when the RPI comes out to be patient. Let the whole season play out. Teams that flying high in week 6 might not be in Week 11, nor might be their opponent's or their opponent's opponent's.
