Grading schools is idiotic. Just look at where the free and reduced lunch is below 25% and you will find an A school.

I believe that as much as Nick Saban saying he is going to continue coaching the Miami Dolphins, or the LSU Tigers, or the Michigan State Spartans.

I don't like the argument of which state has the best teams, mostly because how teams are made is changing every 5 years. Teams in the DC, Maryland, Virginia area are not making their team the same way that a team in rural Alabama or Georgia is. Teams in North Jersey are not making their teams the same as a public school in inner city Dallas. The better question is not who has the best teams, but which teams have the greatest depth in terms of teams based on state size. Florida teams suffer from multiple problems. 1) We have a transient population who have few roots in the communities that they are in. As a result they less buy in from the community as a whole. 2) We pay our coaches and teachers very little. Coaches who are worth anything move to states that will pay them. Assistant coaches join them, young men who dream of inheriting that role of head coach know that while Florida offers the jobs, they don't offer the pay to stay. 3) Our communities don't support the teams that do exist. This is true of every level of sports here in level from pro to college to amateur. Florida stinks when it comes to support. Even when the Miami Heat were good during the Wade/LeBron years, fans still didn't show up until the 2nd quarter was half over. Stadiums are a 1/3 full at times (blame bad scheduling), Marlins have the lowest attendance in baseball, the Rays second lowest (despite playing good baseball this season). Bucs were in the bottom 3 last year in attendance. In other words, until we can keep quality head coaches and assistants and gain community support than it doesn't matter.

I am usually critical of professional sports franchises as a whole, but this is the kind of thing I love seeing. Good for the Jaguars! Sorry HornetFan, but the Republican-led (anti Public Schools) state legislature explicitly said they didn't care why kids transferred. They made the arguments that we don't stop a kid from going to the best band program in the county why should stop a kid going to the best football, basketball, baseball program in the country. Now, the legislature still allowed the FHSAA to exist but they essentially neutered them. Should coaches be ethical, yes? But if your elected leaders are saying do what is best for you then they are going to do it.

They don't have to beat superior teams, they just need wins to start building a program. If you have ever coached a sport where the players/community have no sense of what a winning team looks like or acts or does, it is really hard to create the culture. (Hate that word). Some of the hardest part is just getting teams to win several games (against any opponent, even if your school is over 2500 and you are playing a school with 750). Baby steps. Once you start winning then you start looking for quality wins against quality opponents, but if you dont get some wins in, you can't keep the players, if you can't keep the players, the sport dies. It is one of the reasons why I don't understand why people don't push more for a promotion/relegation system. How about we just fully fund schools and extracurriculars so that we don't have to do this. If a district decides that they are going to a club/sport than they should fully fund the cost of having the club (not the extras for the sport/club, but the basics). Coach Stipends Officials Equipment Uniforms Travel (within reason) Security Playing Surfaces I will never understand why we expect kids to fundraise to have the sport/club. I get fundraise for the extras (trophies, jackets, t-shirts, out of state travel, turfgrass). I get that there is a lack of pay for coaches in Florida, but ALL sports coaches would be better served by working together to make a stand for consistent budgeting for extracurriculars from their district as these are things they can point to as things that benefit students instead of themselves.

Grumble Grumble Grumble I get the reasoning and actually agree with the reasoning overall, as teams will be more set in where they are the later you release it, so you are less likely see a team go from 15th to 5th over the course of 4 weeks, but the first time you release the system the early the better so that watchful eyes can look it over. At least that is my opinion.

in 1A-4A, teams are divided into their regions. The top 6 teams in each region are determined by the RPI formula which takes into account 1) Winning Percentage 2) Opponent's Winning Percentage 3) Opponent's Opponent's Winning Percentage The top 2 teams in each region are given a bye into the second round. ----- In 5A-8A, teams are divided into regions and then further divided into districts. District Champions will be seeded #1-4 based on the RPI formula discussed above. "Wildcard" teams will be seeded #5-8 will be based on the next 4 highest RPIs who are not district champions. #1 vs #8 #2 vs #7 #3 vs #6 #4 vs #5

The last two years, you would use the playoff point system. Now we use the RPI system, basically the top 4 or 6 teams (I forget) per region make the playoffs. It is why schools like Trinity Christian (Jax) or Chaminade-Madonna or Pahokee or Madison County don't have to play district games. None of the teams in their "districts" wanted to play them anyway, so the FHSAA allows smaller schools to make their own schedules completely. It is also the reason earlier this year, I warned that Pahokee could get Booker T Washingtoned in terms of scheduling so tough that they end up with not enough wins to make it. It is also how a school like St. Joseph's makes the playoffs last year going 9-0 and facing nothing but extremely small schools and a schedule that makes cupcakes schedules look hard. Don't get me wrong, St. Joseph's would be in under almost any system, but reflecting on their schedule makes me think, I would rather choose a cupcake schedule than an impossible schedule.

Just the RPI, maxpreps is showing their record against teams in their region, but those games don't count any more than any other game.

So I was watching some football and noticed Rutgers was playing. I watched, it was bad. Now, what does this have to do with Florida High School football? Well, It is within recent memory that Rutgers was playing solid football. No, they weren't going to win championships anytime soon, but they definitely were competitive within the Big East (now the AAC). A record of 11-2 in 2006 is probably the high point. Several bowl games from 2005-2011. They simply weren't ready for the financial commitment and honestly didn't have the proven track record to compete. Losing Schiano (as much as he has proven to be an _______) also hurt them as he had connections from his days working at the University of Miami. The bigger point is that Florida guys (guys that the big schools never wanted) were able to make an also ran school into a much better team.

Lowndes vs Valdosta is next week (Valdosta beat Colquitt). Both teams are 5-0 heading into the game, I might dare say Valdosta and Lowndes are back to being great.

The sad part is that a #1 seed actually has less time to prepare than a #4 or 5 seed for the first round match in theory. The district champions are decided a week before the last week. If your region has a really good district runner-up type team than they most likely will be the #5 seed, thus the #4 and #5 can probably start preparing. The number #8 seed can often be one of numerous teams from the #6 to the #10 team. As a result, the #1 team actually can start preparing until the results are official.

Both, District Champs automatically qualify (wins and losses), RPI is used to rank them (1-4) and rank who the wildcards are (5-8)

Healthy Franks or not, I don't think the Gators are beating Auburn, LSU, or Georgia. I think the rest of the schedule looks manageable based on how Trask looked. I think a 9-3 record is reasonable. If the Gators can keep the game against the above 3 close and not be blown out (but still lose), I think I could accept that. A random loss to FSU or Missouri won't be the end of the world. I am also a person who enters the season with the idea that that Gators should only be 8-4 and if they don't meet that then I get upset otherwise I am fine.

How would the Paddle not be on the line if the two played a football game? I mean, I get if two teams don't play, but the very nature that they played in a regular season game automatically means the paddle is one the line. Otherwise what is the point of the trophy. Now, if you are saying they are retiring the paddle forever, so be it, but then the game is a just rivalry with no name.

Steinbrenner, Next season, maybe Josh can pay us and we can put together an UNOFFICIAL ranking for the site , but I will say to do one region, I have to look at 270+ teams, it look me nearly 25-30 hours of prep time at a minimum to put together my excel sheet. Every week it takes 2.5 hours to find the results for all 270+ teams. Is it worth it? Probably not. It is a mind numbing task that gives me a little peace and allows me to see how good I am at using excel. It also allows me to double check the FHSAA as they aren't perfect. The worst part of this new system is that every game matters, some game that happened in New Jersey or Maryland or Louisiana or California somehow matters all of a sudden. I don't envy the FHSAA programmers. ____________

It is funny that Lakeland people are saying that they don't recruit when the entire "High School Free Agency" bill that was introduced by representatives of Polk County was because the FHSAA punished Lakeland for a couple of kids transferring for athletic reasons. And the fact that our state legislature hates public schools.

The video is a couple of years old at this point, but my buddies and I have watched it as instinctive of what a coach should generally do on 4th down. It is also the reason why I loved watching Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson's triple option because of how aggressive he was in trying for it on 4th down (except last year). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbgqKHxzTfU A good example of a lack of aggressiveness in hurting the team was the PItt-Penn State game. Pitt on the 1 yard line decides to kick the FG rather than try a 4th attempt from the 1 yard line. The kicker misses the kick and Pitt never really recovers. Pitt was down 7 at the time with 5 minutes left. Interestingly, Denver went for 2 when they were down 1 at home with 30 seconds left and got it and Chicago drove 40 yards in 31 seconds to allow former Gator Eddie Pineiro to hit the game winning 53 yard field goal.

Some people were saying Mullen shouldn't have gone for 2 so early in the 4th and if he hadn't then the worse the Kentucky FG would have been is a tie if the Gators had just kicked the 2 extra points. Today, Doug Marrone (Jax) has a chance to tie the game with an extra point and decides to go for 2 and misses. I truly believe that Mullen made the right call, even early in the 4th. His offense hadn't done much all game, his defense was playing ok, but not lights out and who knows what was going to happen with your back-up QB in. I look at the decision to go for 2 as the right decision even if they didn't get it. Marrone, on the hand, went with the idea win on the road, tie at home. I get it, but as a coach, you gotta see a bigger picture. Your team is 0-1, has lost it's starting QB for half the season at least, you are coming a dreadful season, you have had a shouting match on the sidelines with a star CB, you gotta play to not lose. I don't get the decision here and I am usually on the 4th and short, go for it. 2 point conversion, go for it, but overall whether Fournette makes it or not, I don't like the call. When should coaches go for two? (Any level)
