I would never be allowed to be a football coach anyway so I probably wont be able to see through that mindset

Why? Coach Weiner at Tampa Plant did not play the game competitively and is one of the more successful coaches in Florida High School Football. So even if you did not play varsity, does not mean you could not coach if that is what you wanted to do.

IMG Academy has almost 1,000 students, campus spokesman Ryan Tronovitch said. While the facility is known for its athletics, Tronovitch said the educational program is sending more than 98 percent of the students to college.

    $2 million, no explanation

IMG Academy was set to only get $50,000 this year. But in a late-night maneuver — just before midnight Monday, before the budget was printed — the academy’s funding jumped to $2,050,000 with no explanation. That goes with $7.3 million the state budgeted for the company in 2013 and 2014. This year’s budget — with the IMG funding — was a lock to pass on Friday when the Legislature met to close out its special session.

If this is not the epitome of "crony capitalism", then I don't know what is. So there you have it. State taxpayer funds are at least partially funding the scholarships for talented kids to attend.

Pretty amazing when we look at all the projects that really need funding and fail to get it.

IMG company story from their website:

Founded in 1960 with a single deal that would prove the advent of modern-day sports marketing, IMG is now a global leader in sports, events, media and fashion, operating in more than 30 countries. The company represents and manages some of the world’s greatest sports figures and fashion icons; stages hundreds of live events and branded entertainment experiences annually; and is one of the largest independent producers and distributors of sports media. IMG also specializes in sports training; league development; and marketing, media and licensing for brands, sports organizations and collegiate institutions.

And that, in so many words, represents the difference between them and the Trinity Catholics, Trinity Christians, Bolles School, and St. Thomas Aquinas's of the world. It is not primarily an educational institution and there is the potential for all kinds of conflict of interests in what they do.

nope but its where people choose to lead it

instead of building your community up they are looking for first ticket out to sell out for something better

Columbia, you strike me as a good young man with a strong moral compass. Stay the way you are. We live in a harsh world, one that needs people to question things and not just always go with the flow for their own benefit.

The IMG company was a sports agency representing a lot of big time pro athletes if I remember correctly

That is correct. I don't wish to diminish the benefit some kids may get from attending IMG. However, I question whether this is where we should be going as a society.

If you have never been on the IMG campus it is hard to explain. It has been a few years but the amount of money flowing through this place is almost unimaginable. Its not cash its the things you see that most do not. The amount of resources is unlimited. The best coaches, equipment, books, staff, food. They are all geared for one thing and its not losing.

I can remember being refused entry due to a security issue with a Prince of some middle east country being on campus.

Any sport that you can think of that they can make money off of is available for the right price.

Don't forget IMG has other interests as well Modelling and other businesses. Its a Corporation .

A for profit Corporation, just like an Apple, or General Electric. This is not some Not-for-Profit private school like St. Thomas.

Shark...................I'm not trying to find fault with your statement so please bare with me. However, I would surely like to know where you obtained the information that IMG gives scholarships. Do you know for sure (know some students or coaches) about these scholarships? Outside of government assistance, for needy students, as a partial amount of the tuition, how does IMG make a profit by giving $75,000 scholarships out of their pocket to their football players? What benefit would it be for IMG to basically give free rides? How do they recoup that money? Another thing is that if they were supposedly getting government assistance I don't believe that any government program would approve assistance for a school charging $75,000. If you are going to a private school that charges the average of $10,000 then government assistance may enter into it. Then again, government assistance is on a needs basis and normally doesn't cover more than 20% of the customary tuition. Case in point is Trinity Catholic where for years all I heard was that the school provided paid scholarships to it's football players and that is why the football team was so good. The problem is that it was not true. A few Trinity players were able to secure partial government assistance that paid for a small percentage of the tuition. The only other tuition discount that I knew of was if your family belonged to the church. Then your son would get a 5 to 10 percent tuition discount. I know of no student that received full tuition paid by the school.

They make a profit precisely because they charge $75,000 per year to those that can afford it, which, in the case of football, are the kids that play mostly on the second team or not on either of the two teams at all. They also are involved in multiple other sports and the overall philosophy is the same. They make the money back by charging the top fraction of 1% that can afford it, full tuition while providing scholarships (financial assistance) to some of the top athletes in the country (if you look at the roster for football, the kids are from all over the place).

To them, the free or near free ride to the top athletes is part of the cost of doing business (marketing expense) so they can get those with money to pay the outrageous cost of being in the IMG program. To me, the whole concept seems to represent capitalism run amok and seems totally un-American.

But what do I know ...

    are they in florida?

In Lake County near Orlando. Relatively small private school. Lots of international kids (foreigners with quite a few from China). They have a powerhouse basketball program and play a national schedule. They are also very good in several other sports but don't have a football program.

IMG gives scholarships to kids that would never be able to afford 70k a year

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe one such kid is from Port St. Joe. I know over the years, quite a few similar situated kids have gone to IMG.

  10. At this stage, I agree with both of you that DP wins. I will go with a relatively low scoring game. I don't think DP scores more than low 20s. However, I believe low 20s will be enough to beat Wekiva based on their last two performances. I may be able to forgive the Winter Park game, as WP is a solid team. I am less forgiving of the Olympia game, as Olympia seems more like a .500 ball club this year.

On the other hand, DP's offense has also been sluggish recently, and against both West Orange and Oak Ridge, it did not get into gear till the second half.

what does Wekiva having players kneel and them playing DP this week have anything to do with each other?  Is DP going to destroy them because they took a knee during the anthem?  Is DP not going to let them on the field during the anthem?  Are you against Wekiva players taking a knee?  What is your point in this post?

    On a side note:

After watching Wekiva it appears Wekiva's offense has decided to take a knee during the game.

The last paragraph is true. Their offense has been strangely absent in their last two games.

Regarding the questions you asked, I can only guess that Mid is advocating DP punish them on the field for their transgressions. But seriously, the two things have nothing to do with each other. Barring bad weather or other factors, the game will be played unless the FHSAA comes out with policy barring teams that kneel from competing in their sponsored events.

Here's to the best team winning.

    It's all good lol

This game shows what is instilled by the coach all the time, that we are capable of playing with anyone we step on field with at our best and even though we have work to do i feel we will be able to get better by November and be ready to put up a fight in 7a north playoffs

Even though Lee won the first battle, it does not mean they win the war. The year Apopka won its first state title, they lost in a district game to Edgewater. In the regional final the blew Edgewater away. A lot can happen in six to eight weeks!

Don't write Cardinal Gibbons off yet...AHP will have to face them twice this year.  AHP is still the favorite but they were against Hallandale in 2015 as well...

That's true. I was assuming Jones and AHP are district champs. But you are right, Gibbons could probably be a live threat to either team.

  14. 7 minutes ago, ColumbiaHighFan2017class said:

Is jones in region 2 or 3?

They are in district 13, which puts them in Region 4. In the old format, they would meet AHP/Gibbons in the third game of the playoffs (Regional Final). Under the new format, it could be sooner.
