  1. In a twitter conversation with ER coach he stated he wants to have his team battle tested come playoff time.

That sounds about right. East Ridge participated in a scrimmage this week with: Osceola, Bishop Moore, and Apopka, three of the best teams in Central Florida. I am told that they held their own.

He is certainly trying to get his kids ready for a better level of competition. He is probably looking ahead to next year when attendance rules change dramatically. Lake Minneola, South Lake, and across the County line, West Orange, are all within commutable distance of ER. If he creates the impression that his program is on the upswing, it could definitely draw kids from these schools. My guess is that if he can keep the score respectable for a quarter to a half against Central, he will view it as mission accomplished. Of course this could backfire. I remember a couple years ago when Gainesville came in to Orlando to face Central with an undefeated record in the state game. Let's just say, things went downhill very quickly.

  2. I think because Central doesn't have a 10 game schedule is what's making the East Ridge game stand out. Honestly I think every team should have one cupcake game and in Central case why go up the road when you have plenty in Miami. Barbara Goleman, Hialeah Gardens, Westland Hialeah, Morning, Coral Park just naming a few. Here's my 10 game schedule for the Rockets.

East Ridge is better by a bit than a Goleman, Hialeah Gardens, Morning, Coral Park, etc. They will be about the level of a Jackson or Norland this year. Until Lake Minneola opened, East Ridge actually had a good football program, had a multi-year unbeaten regular season streak, and was able to beat Apopka in 2003. With the opening of the new school, you ended up with two schools that did not have enough talent to be competitive in the post season. Their new coach had a partial turnaround season last year. While I don't expect them to be competitive against Central, I give him credit for going up to the challenge.

  3. the best four months of the year. Can't wait to see what this season will bring!!

Everyone is currently undefeated; in some quarters expectations are high; some will be fulfilled and some not; and, somewhere in the state, an unranked, unhearalded team will exceed expectations and make a run ...

  4. The game may be good, with great athletes. But is this what high school football is supposed to be? At what stage do we say enough? At the high school level it should be more about community and team. Most high school kids end their careers in October, November of December of their senior years.

  5. IT is quite possible that STA's second team would win 7a relatively easily.

Having said that, could they somehow not win 7a? Sure, it only takes one massive upset in the playoffs. Would I bet on that happening this year? Only if I were given odds in my favor of 1,000 - 1. And even at those odds, I would bet a very, very modest amount.

  6. 8a -

North: Apopka, Orange City University, Lake Brantley (sleeper), Dr. Phillips, Manatee, Osceola.

South: Southridge, Columbus, Flanagan, Deerfield Beach, Miramar

7a - Both brackets, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Thomas Aquinas

    6a -

    North: Armwood, Niceville, Gainesville

South: Central, Central, Mainland, Carol City

The South bracket is heavily favored

    5a -

    North: Wakulla, Pensacola, Orange Park

South: American Heritage Plantation, Bishop Moore, South East.

The South bracket is highly favored.

4a - Both Brackets, Booker T. Washington, BTW, BTW, Bolles

I will defer on 3a on down. Needless to say, TCA is favored in 3a and my knowledge of the classes below is too limited to make an informed pick on any schools.

  7. Do you guys think if Cocoa, Mainland and Armwood were in South Florida that maybe they would be more battle tested. Since 2011 it seems Mainland and Armwood can't beat Central and the same with Cocoa can't beat Booker T. Washington

Mainland would hold its own in South Florida. I am not sure about recent Armwood teams. The Armwood team of the early 2000s which won back to back titles beating BTW twice would have held its own. As for Cocoa, they would have to make major offensive adjustments, but if they did they might as the talent (but not the depth) is there.

  8. where is this clinic at?

That was in Orlando. I believe it was run by Lo Wood.

As an aside, during the off season, as time permits, Rick participates as a lecturer in the Glazier clinics which are held in many different locations throughout the USA. In them, he talks about many aspects of the Apopka program including both offensive and defensive formations, in addition to the less tangible aspects of how he runs his program.

  9. Very few public school football programs are run as well as Apopka.  When I watched that entire video, I was under the impression that I was watching the Head Coach of a successful large private (Christian based).  Is RD a full time teacher at the school as well?

Coach Darlington has taught PE and, I believe Social Studies, during his time at Apopka. It's kind of funny, he graduated with a business degree from Stetson University, but decided his first love was football. Coached at Lakeland (Assistant) and Eustis (brief stint as head coach), and I believe up in the Panhandle (don't remember the school), before coming to Apopka. Did three seasons at Valdosta 2003-2005 before returning to Apopka in 2006.

One of the reasons Apopka does not have many transfers (either in or out), is due to the way the program is run. In many respects it is not fun as you can't coast regardless of talent. However, if you buy into what is done, I believe in the long run you are better off for it as it prepares you for life and adversity beyond high school.

  10. Any chance you know where I can find the full game

Go to the National High School Sports Network website (Google search). I think you will have to register. A basic registration, if I remember correctly, is free. Then search under football videos for either Columbia High or Carol City. I saw the game some time ago, so I don't know for sure if it is still up, but it was there in its entirety.

Theirs our quarterbacks highlights from hudl, feel free to check it out

I have taken a look. He has a good arm and, while I don't regard him as dual threat, he is not immobile. Here is a key question:How experienced and good do you expect your offensive line to be this year?

If the line can buy him protection, he could rack up some passing yards. If he is under constant pressure, then Columbia will be in trouble.

BTW, how did you beat Bolles at Bolles but lose to Viera?

  12. 16 days out from Apopka vs Columbia part 2, I'll give a overview when it gets closer to game day, is there anyone who expects game to be close?

The game could be close if Columbia has an outstanding offense. However, I am pretty sure that Apopka is going to score early and often. Two offensive linemen that one day probably play in the NFL are going to open up a lot of holes for the running game. And, I expect Apopka to pass the ball much more effectively than last year. Apopka's defense will be good, but if you have a real good quarterback that does not get rattled under pressure, you may be able to put up some points.

By design, Apopka's defense always leaves room for screens and other short passes in the flats. The overarching objective has always to bring pressure up front.

  14. There were many SFL locals that actually thought Hallandale had a good shot at upsetting AHP in the playoffs. The Hallandale/Bishop Moore game could have gone either way last year. If you like Offense it was quite a show. I think AHP, Hallandale, Bishop Moore were all very close last year. All were capable of beating one another. Think about it Bishop Moore lost to AHP the previous year (2014) by only 3. Hallandale was in foreign territory playing a Bishop Moore team that was 3 pts away from states ( assuming they get by underdog Tampa Jesuit) the previous year and had much more playoff experience playing at Home. Those 3 teams were close last year , it is just AHP reloads the easiest and has the more established name. Now this year I favor AHP, not necessarily because they are any better than last, just Hallandale is way, way down and Bishop Moore will be down a bit (but not out of the hunt).

Yup I remember, I never heard bishop morre name once on this board until they beat hallendale who beat AHP

First to address Columbiahighfanw2016 - If I remember correctly, last year I posted on this board that Bishop Moore, at home, was going to give Hallandale all it could handle. In fact, I think I ended up picking them to win by 3.

Regarding the Bishop Moore program, under Matt Hedrick, a graduate of Mount Dora and Furman, the program has thrived. Matt has spent his entire coaching career there which has spanned over 20 years. Prior to 2014, they had won 7 district titles in a row (with records varying from 8-2 to 10-0 regular season). Unfortunately, till 2014, this was all for naught as they were usually out in the first or second round of the playoffs. This changed in 2014 when they came within a hairs breadth of beating American Heritage in the playoffs. Heritage went on to win the title in a rout of Godby.

In the 2014 season, Bishop Moore was the beneficiary of two things. First, Lake Mary Prep scrapped its football program at the conclusion of the prior year, and Bishop Moore picked up two or three impact players from it including Ray Lewis's son Rayshard. Second, over that summer Bishop Moore was the beneficiary of a couple key public school transfers. This paid off in spades in 2015 when they won their first title since 1970 (I believe). This upcoming year, they have again been the beneficiary of a couple D1 transfers from public schools in the area.

Bishop Moore is the only Catholic High School in the Greater Orlando area. The two nearest Catholic High Schools are in Daytona Beach (Father Lopez) and Santa Fe Catholic in Lakeland. As such, over the years, the schools has had talent from Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and the Northern part of Brevard Counties. This talent was solid, with many of them going to the Ivy Leagues and the Military Academies  (Belan Jesuit comes to mind), with a few going to D1 football schools. However, this talent was not sufficient or deep enough to make a serious run at a State Title. What has changed in the last thee seasons (including the upcoming one), is the influx of transfers. My take on BM is that they were always 3 or 4 key players away from being a perennial power. With the school now seeming willing to compliment its internal talent, we may be seeing the beginnings of a very strong football run over the next decade.

  15. I thought it would be considered the Flexbone....Maybe I am wrong.  All I know is that they only through the ball 9 TIMES the entire season leading up to states.  Then when they fell behind 2 TDs at States and the clock was ticking the $hi^ hit the fan on them.

Osceola does run the flexbone. It is what Apopka used to run in the early 2000s. They used the flexbone to advantage in the 2001 state title game. Osceola's Offensive Coordinator is a former Apopka coach/head coach. He has continued to use the Flexbone there.

Regarding Single wing, BH gave a pretty good description. One point of correction: the fourth back is technically not a quarterback but is an additional wing back. There is no true QB in a single wing formation. In that sense it differs from the triple option run by Lake Brantley. Essentially the way Apopka runs it, every single offensive player is a blocker even if a skill position player. The trick is both deception and to have more guys at the point of attack providing a measure of protection for the ball carrier. When it is working, with the right personnel, it can be very difficult to stop. If you combine it with a spread or I formation package, it provides even more of a challenge. If you look at film of the Cypress Bay state title game, that would be a great example of this.
