  1. Tied at #7 is Niceville and Osceola.

Niceville won a state title in 1988, winning it at home against Southeast at home.  1988 was the last year they held title games at the home field of one of the participants.  Since then, Niceville has only missed the playoffs 4 times.  Niceville has since made 4 Final 4 appearances and advanced to the title game twice, losing to Dwyer each time.  Word has it Niceville got tired of Jack Daniels!

Osceola won a state title in 1998 against Estero.  The Kowboys have only missed the playoffs twice since.  They have since made 5 final 4 appearances and advanced to the title game 3 times, losing twice to STA and once to Flanagan.

Okay, then I am going to go out on a limb and guess it is another Central Florida team. Would it be the Mainland Bucs, the team supported by my long suffering friend Dan in Daytona? If I am right, at least he had the pleasure of a state title in 2003.

It is Mainland!  Mainland is 1-7 in state semis over the years.  3 of those games were against Miami Central (2011, 2013, 2014) and 2 against Lakeland (2004, 2006).  Talk about some tough competition!

On a positive note, Mainland is 8-3 in region finals.

  3. Below is a relevant thread from a couple of years ago.  A newer school is already struggling to compete and they get moved up in class where, in theory, they will run into even tougher competition.

Look at Windermere as an example.  They were 2-18 their first two years of playing in 7A, and then they got moved up to 8A, where they have won 3 games over the past two years.

  4. Bartram Trail has gradually moved up in class over the years.  They became 6A in 2011, 7A in 2015, and 8A in 2019.  They were 5A in much of the 00's.  Maybe that is the key.  Regardless of size of school, start new schools in the lower classes, regardless of time, and allow them to move up over time.

  5. The second team mentioned in the first question has faced a murderer's row of competition in the state semis.  Certain teams in history have just gotten bad playoff draws and/or were in the wrong class at the wrong time, and this was one of them.  They may have multiple state titles otherwise.

As a fan of the game, I would be more than happy to attend any game where the final differential is 17 points or less. Thus, from LAZ's analysis somewhere in the region of 35% of the games would be attractive candidates to me. Why? Many 14 point or less games are actually very competitive as the final score creating the more than one touchdown margin often comes in the final five minutes of the game. And, even a 17 point margin game can be quite entertaining, if the overall quality of the teams is good to very good.

What bothers me the most is the fact, than over 20% of the games are decided by margins of 37 points or more. To me that is unacceptable, as 35 points represent a running clock in Florida high school football, implying that the true differential between teams in the final 20% of games is probably much more than 37 points if the running clock were eliminated.

This begs the question: why aren't the powers that be doing something to address this? Too many classes; the proliferation of recruiting, aided and abetted by changes in the rules for attending a given school; the explosion of new schools competing in the higher classes; the lack of a promotion and relegation system, have all been cited as contributing to the number of these blowout games which serve no purpose and in fact can be outright dangerous to the participants of the cellar dweller schools.

For the health of the sport, something needs to be done sooner (not later) in order to preserve interest in the sport. Failure to do so will result in more and more large class school following the lead of several Miami Dade schools in abandoning the playoffs once and for all in favor of setting up their own conferences.

Possibly some of the "answers" can be found in a hs ESPN broadcast.  A number of ESPN games we have watched over the years were not competitive.  It's as if the game was an afterthought.  The main attraction was the individual athletes and what college they were going to.

On those broadcasts, there is often little discussion about the history of the schools and the teams' histories.  "They" have found a way to market hs football, and that marketing strategy is not dependent upon having depth of team talent like in the NFL.  HSFB's brand is superteams and 5-star players.

As much as we beat our chest about FL hs football, the reality is that there are a ton of mediocre-to-poor hs football teams in the state.  It's our dirty little secret.  FL has built its national reputation on the backs of a relative few programs.

Maybe not on this board but I've seen it on other platforms

I would post the screenshots of it but for some reason it wouldn't let me post screenshots on here (something about the image size being too big)

Do yourself a favor.  Don't worry so much about what other people think.  You'll be much happier in life.

  8. I completely agree and thanks for reminding us, LAZ.  The thread below supports your assertion.  I believe we have a few things at play, including...

    • the transfer/superteam phenomenon
    • incorporation of the spread offense and potential for more plays being run and higher scores
    • evolving demographics, ie predominantly Hispanic schools in Miami-Dade where football is not as popular
    • a substantial number of new schools coming on line over the past 25 years and placed into larger classifications where they are often not competitive

Columbia has 43 total playoff wins with their 4th one being the state championship so 39 playoff wins since

In all honesty for all the crap people bash columbia about they still have been better off than a ton of programs in state history

43 playoff wins and one of only 3 programs in FL history with 700 wins but yet people act like columbia is a bunch of failures which is incredibly misleading especially considering the amount of kids getting a chance to play at the next level and the NFL

Tied for 18th in FL history for most NFL players and tied for 10th in FL for active NFL players as well

Who are all of these people who "bash" Columbia and act like they a failure?  Maybe that's what you think people think.  I don't think anyone on this board thinks Columbia is a failure.

Old School, my numbers must be off a little.  But here are the teams that I have found that have won a single state title, but in each case, it was won more than 20 years ago:

Clewiston (won it in '82); 37 total playoff wins.

Columbia (won it in '67); 40 total playoff wins.

Niceville (won it in '88); 36 total playoff wins.

Osceola (Kissimmee) (won it in '98); 48 total playoff wins.

Vero Beach (won it in '81); 42 total playoff wins.

When you say "playoff wins," are you just referring to playoff wins since they won their state title?   Or are my numbers just off?  Also, I'm including playoff wins from this year.

Apologies if that was unclear.  It's playoff wins since the team won a state title and includes playoff wins this year.  Clewiston has 30 since they were co-champion, so Clewiston is not on the list.

I believe the Deerfield Beach Bucs is one of the two teams to make it to at least 8 final fours but only one final. If I am correct, they lost that final to Palm Beach Gardens after upsetting the Northwestern Bulls the week before.

Deerfield Beach is one of the two.  DB has appeared in 9 state semis since 1993 and lost 8 of them. 4 of those 8 losses were at home and 3 of the losses were by a TD or less.  In their defense, DB's playoff path the past 15 years has had them cross paths with some very tough Miami-Dade teams

Looking at things in a positive light, that means that on average they make a state semi once every 3 years.  How many teams would not love to have that track record?  And during that time frame, DB is an amazing 9-1 in region finals.  They just seem to have a problem when it comes to state semis.

  12. 10 teams have won a ton of playoff games without a state title win.  5 of those teams, listed below with the number of playoff wins, have never won a state title.  The other 5 have won a state title, but it has been 20+ years since they did so.  Those in bold have won at least one state title and the number represents the playoff wins since their last title.

Can you name the 5 former state champions below who are in the midst of a drought?

    #1 Deerfield Beach 40

    #2 ????????? 39

    #3(tie) ????????? 38

    #3(tie) Edgewater 38

    #5 ????????? 36

    #6 South Sumter 35

    #7(tie) ?????????? 34

    #7(tie) ?????????? 34

    #9 Delray Beach Atlantic 33

    #10 Lake Wales 31

  13. Of the 5 teams mentioned above, Wharton is arguably the greatest one-hit wonder ever.  5 years after opening, the school made the 5A state final, where they lost to Ely.  The future looked bright for Wharton.  But since then, Wharton has only won 3 playoff games, including one this year.

  14. Amongst schools in the larger classifications, 15 have appeared in 8 or more Final 4's.  13 of those 15 teams have appeared in 3 or more state finals and 11 of those have won multiple state titles.

2 of the teams have only advanced to one state final, meaning they typically lost in the state semifinal game.  Who are those two teams?

One team has made it to 9 Final 4's and 5 state title games, but only has one state title to show for it.  Who is that team?

All the teams I can think of that meet the criterion have made several fairly deep runs. So, I have to admit I am stumped. I would have said Lake Brantley, but we already have that accounted for. So, I have no clue. I could not be Edgewater or Boone, or Dr. Phillips or Osceola or ...

I remember seeing this team play in the state final...such fond memories  The game was was on a delightful December day, which was a relief since they had been predicting a deluge that Saturday.  I had not gotten any sleep the night before, and was deliberating whether I should make the drive.  Turns out I did, so I was delirious come gametime.  There were big lines at the stadium, so there was a delay getting in, but it was worth the wait.  After the game, I met a friend from the area and we had a delicious dinner, feasting on sushi and some other delicacies.
