Good thing we won the game anyway!

From what I was told, St Cloud had the same issue last friday night. At least that was what I was told.

It is a large case of CYA, but in my opinion, without logic applied. Calculate the gpa, with a "0" or "f" and if its above 2.0 the kid is good.

My principal also sees it that way and is supposed to be working on that fix.

I am being told it is the state, not the county!  So that may be the first incorrect thing I am being told. My ad has the best electron microscope for anything that is not exactly what the ad wants. Takes my players off the field for mandatory study halls, during practice time. 'because we dont want them to become ineligible", Doesnt matter if the kid has a 3.9, still has to attend. If you dont go to study hall, you may end up not playing!  My ad thinks ad stands for athletic disciplinarian. I know why it is tough here and why so many coaches leave. This situation is very tough to handle when you are always being thrown a curve ball at the last minute. This is but just 1 of many things.  Now on a positive note, the ad truly means well and thinks what is being done is in the best interests of the students.

It sounds like you and the AD need to have a meeting and figure a way to meet your team's practice requirements and still schedule mandatory study halls. It's hard to argue against the AD's motives; he wants to make sure these kids are successful academically so they can be successful in life in the future; football should not be the first priority if it gets in the way of a kid's education. Some kids are well disciplined when it comes to their studies and may not need a mandatory study hall, but to exempt the kid with the 3.9 gpa from the study period could be divisive for the team. Kids should not be encouraged to try for a 2.0 gpa just so they can be eligible to play football; they should be encouraged to excel in the classroom so they meet or exceed the same college academic entrance requirements that non-athletes must achieve.

If you read the article, these rankings were obviously made after the games on Friday night.  My whole emphasis is in the insanity of ranking teams this early in the season, not that I agree with his list because I don't.

I agree with you that pre-season rankings are not a true indicator of what we will probably see as the season progresses. I do like JC Carnahan's articles because he actually attends games on Friday nights so his opinion is respected. Like you stated, I think a few on his list are rated a little too high, but his top 5 are probably the 5 best in the Orlando area, but not necessarily in the order he has them rated. Still, he did a reasonably good job for a pre-season ranking.

    Orlando Sentinel sports page (yesterday).

I just read the article by JC Carnahan, not Buddy Collins. He does have DP at #10 (down from #7 last season) and WP at #11 (up from #14 last season) and coming into the 1st I have no problem with that. Positions will change as the season progresses and I expect WP may rise maybe 2 or 3 spots while DP should drop like a rock as they accrue loss after loss. I also noticed that West Orange is rated pre-season #4 ahead of Osceola at #5; that should also be interesting as the season progresses.

EOC = end of course. These are graduation requirement benchmarks

Thanks for the clarification; I like to learn something new every day. Before I disparage the State of Florida education system, are we referring to EOC exams taken back in May or after Summer school courses? I could see a potential problem with exams taken at the end of the Summer, especially with this crazy Covid year, but there is no excuse for not having final grade results for this past May.

Your assumption then is that pollsters make a ranking before the game is played on Friday?  Am I understanding that right?  Then after the games are played he RELEASES  new poll that doesn't account for those games regardless of the outcome.  Right.  To early for rankings as I have clearly stated and will get a much better understanding as games are played, won or lost, common opponents, point spread, etc...  Not passing judgement on DP without more games being played.

Your assumption then is that pollsters make a ranking before the game is played on Friday?

As I haven't been able to find the Buddy Collin's poll via Google, maybe you could provide a link to it. My assumption was that he created a pre-season ranking based upon his assumptions as to how teams may perform and he based that on past history. I don't think too many people expected DP to look so bad in the Spring Jamboree and the KOC. Friday will be here in a few days and DP will play a good Jones HS team; we'll see.

How do you figure I am looking past West Orange?  Whether we win the district or they do it is likely we will see each other in the 2nd round.  Thought you said you were good at math?

How do you figure I am looking past West Orange?

Maybe I just got that idea from your previous post where you stated: Round 2 could be vs West Orange a 2nd time, round 3 possibly Venice, Sarasota Riverview, etc.. and finally a strong contender from Miami like Columbus, Deerfield, Palmetto and others.   MURDERS ROW!!

To me, using my excellent math skills, it appears that you moved right past WO to a few more rounds. Osceola has a strong team and should be a contender; I just don't think they should take WO for granted..

The "I" comes from the state mandated EOC exam. That exam can count up to 30% of the students final grade.

The state has not sent the results back to the county so they can be factored in the students final grade.

The problem as I see it is FHSAA has its rules and bylaws that have to be followed and the state doesnt care about the athletes and the date their grades have to be tabulated.

That is the story I am being given. Hopefully it is all true

The "I" comes from the state mandated EOC exam. That exam can count up to 30% of the students final grade.

Help me understand this please; I'm an old man. What is a state mandated EOC exam? If it counts for up to 30% of a student's grade, how can the student move on to the next level class not knowing if he/she passed the last course? This seems to leave the kid in limbo not only as an athlete but academically. If these kids took these EOC exams this past Spring semester and the State has not yet tabulated the results, something is amiss. Hopefully it gets straightened out before it effects the kids classes for this semester and their chance to play football.

They were just released... Is that before or after the bitch-slapping?

I didn't ask if they were just released. The question was when he put the rankings together. The "bitch-slapping" took place three days ago. As I stated above, let me know what you think of DP's prospects after their game this Friday with Jones HS. I think DP will lose to Jones, Apopka, West Orange, Osceola, and Cocoa, at the very least; and I believe they will be put on a running clock in several of those games. Lake Mary will probably beat them too.

Maybe you should have a heart to heart with HS football expert Buddy Collins of the Orlando Sentinel.  He just published his rankings and has DP ranked ahead of WP.  Reckon he has some insider info??

Pre-season rankings place too much emphasis on reputation based upon performance from past years; this is a new year with new players. Did Buddy Collins put together his rankings before or after Lake Minneola bitch-slapped DP last Friday? WP is a fairly young team and still had their way with DP in 1/4 of varsity play in the Spring Jamboree. Let me know what you think of DP after they play Jones this Friday.

We shall see, I know we are better than last year just have a significantly more difficult route this time around and hope everyone on our side understands that.  Round 2 could be vs West Orange a 2nd time, round 3 possibly Venice, Sarasota Riverview, etc.. and finally a strong contender from Miami like Columbus, Deerfield, Palmetto and others.   MURDERS ROW!!

Round 2 could be vs West Orange a 2nd time,

I wouldn't look past West Orange; their DL is huge and their entire defense is very aggressive. Their OL is also very big and gives their QB time to find receivers. If Osceola takes them for granted, it could be a long night for Osceola.

I was there, too. They had talent on the field but the kids were not into the game. I thought that over the summer they would have gotten their act together. There are an old hand at being competitive both locally and in the playoffs.

If this is the beginning of a drought, I am saddened as I usually look forward to the DP/Apopka game which has been a rivalry since the teams were in the same district.

DP showed nothing in he Spring Jamboree against Apopka or Winter Park. Apopka's varsity played without new transfer QB Andrew McClain and had their way with DP to the tune 0f 21-0 in just less than a half. WP varsity played one quarter against DP and had then down 12-0. I expect that Apopka will have DP on a running clock early in the 3rd quarter when they play September 10th. It may even be worse for DP when they play at West Orange on October 1st, Cocoa the following week, and then Osceola a week later. All of those games may be blowouts.

I would like opinions on this topic please.

My AD, came to me friday 3 hours before the game and told me that 5 of my players were going to be deemed ineligible due to the fact that their GPA while being above a 2.0 on the record dated on sept 2nd,  had "I" listed as a grade and that wasnt correctly factored in their gpa by our system. meaning that it just didnt count the "I" at all.

The 'i" comes from state assessments have not been finalized and added to their course to determine the final grade for the course. (this is a state problem, not a district problem or so I was told) therefore every team in the state should be suffering from the same issue! Correct?

My AD and or district decided that we must err on the side of caution. for example a player with less than a 2.4 gpa who has an "I" on their report card would be considered ineligible per the AD's ruling. because we do not want to take a chance on playing a potentially ineligible player or have to pay a fine, which the school cannot afford.

So I argued that, a player with a 2.4 gpa, who has an "i" (which is considered by florida statutes as a "0" on the 4 point gpa scale) cannot play even though when you figure the gpa using the "0" for the "i" is still above a 2.0.  I explained that you cannot have a -1 on a Gpa so the score cannot get any lower. This got me nowhere! So we had to sit many starters from the fall classic.

The bigger issue is when we get to Week 2 when we have a game that counts. Will my players be able to play?  should be!, but!  this is the thinking that keeps us where we are!

I'm a bit confused as to the "I" grade designation and what this has to do with a "state assessment".  I was never a teacher or a school administrator, but I did attend schools through graduate school, and an "I" always meant "incomplete". It meant that the student had not completed all the requirements for the course , and that if they weren't met by a prescribed date, the grade would convert to an "F". Is this not what these kids are facing now? If it isn't a deficiency for which the student is responsible, it would not seem fair that the student/athletes were denied the opportunity to play football solely because the school district and/or the state failed to meet their obligations.

Not that it will be earth shaking, but Celebration's victory over St. Cloud was also big surprise.

I was not shocked LM beat DP, but the margin of victory was shocking!

After seeing DP in the Spring Jamboree and with LM adding several difference makers via transfer, I'm not surprised that DP was blown out by LM. DP is not the team they've been in recent years.

The week 1 game between Cardinals Gibbons and Venice has been canceled due to Covid-19. It has been rescheduled for October 23rd.

Without further cancellations, the game may be even better in late October. Both teams should be at their best about that time of the season. It's just a bummer that any games have to be effected by the virus.

  15. 1 hour ago, Ray Icaza said:

As both Perspective and Skyway point out, the key stat is "Asymptomatic".   Just because we didn't test as often and didn't catch a handful of cases that were identified in another county doesn't mean we didn't have asymptomatic as well but the net effect was nill.

    the key stat is "Asymptomatic".

I think the key stat is actually "rate of vaccination". Asymptomatic means the individual is positive for the virus, just not exhibiting symptoms; they can still contaminate others just as easily as an individual that is positive and exhibiting the effects of the virus. On some occasions, vaccinated individuals can catch the virus and transmit it to others, but this is rare. Unvaccinated individuals are still the overwhelming majority of people testing positive, in the range of 95-99% of all infected individuals.

How did that science make Orange counties covid numbers better than Osceola or Palm Beach better that Polk?  Why did the Big 10 suspend their season until pressure due to SEC refusing to do so. Especially stats regarding young people with hospitalizations and deaths.  No intent to be political, just haven't seen how those policies made a difference.  If you have science to show statistical difference I will be open to revise my position.

How did that science make Orange counties covid numbers better than Osceola or Palm Beach better that Polk?

I can't speak on conditions last season at all the Orange County schools, but a big reason that Winter Park HS avoided being the cause of suspensions of any football games last season due to Covid was that they placed their football team in a "bubble" and had them take school provided on-line learning. The problem this year is that the school provided on-line learning is no longer an option. The football players are attending classes this semester and students, with written permission from their parent(s), may opt out of wearing masks at school.

James was a member of the Darter's first state title team, an offensive coach at Apopka, and an all around good guy. If anyone here can think of a team looking for a game, it would be nice if you contact him.

The way things are going with the Covid 19 cancellations, they may have a good chance in finding an opponent. I wish him good health an good luck.

We will probably have another disrupted season. At this point, Covid-19 is worse in several areas of the state than it was last year this time. I don't see the season being cancelled. But I do see many games being cancelled. Hopefully, Covid-19 peaks by the end of the month and most games get played.

Mt Dora has about a half dozen players in quarantine, but the rest of their team is able to practice for the time being. A month ago, things were looking up in Central Florida for HS football and I was looking forward to attending all my grandson's games this season, but things could get sketchy with the virus heating up. By some minor miracle and the decision to put the football team in a "bubble" last year, they were able to play all their games uninterrupted last season; I'll have to keep the fingers crossed for this season because there won't be a bubble this school year. There are a bunch of real good 8A teams in Central Florida this year and the games should be exciting; I'd hate to games cancelled or attendance reduced to a minimum.

On another topic: According to today's Orlando Sentinel, Timber Creek just lost their stud 6'5", 320# OT, a kid with over 35 scholarship offers; his dad took a job in Texas and the family is moving there next week. That's a legitimate transfer and will be a severe blow to Timber Creek's offense. I wish the kid well in his new home.

I know this is last minute, but I know a legit QB looking to transfer to a Florida HS. 6'4 junior, good speed, great arm. Pro style kid. Are there any high schools out there that have players but need a distributor?

Maybe he should have his parents move to a city of their choice in Florida and enroll him in the local high school. From there, he can take his chances on quarterbacking their football team. I've seen some "legit" QB's move to Central Florida and unfortunately "legit" wasn't quite good enough to win a starting QB position.

Here's the issue; Catholic schools are more common in places like NY. Here in Florida the FHSAA was formed back in the 1920s and private schools were allowed in because there just wasn't that many of them. Don't know how long you have lived in Florida but most issues, not just this one, have arisen because of rapid and uneven population growth in this state. It wasn't all that long ago Florida was a small Southern state.

I moved to Florida in 1984. The transfer problem has only become a major issue recently because some coaches, parents and/or student athletes have seized upon a transfer policy intended to improve the academic opportunities for kids and have used it to strengthen their football programs through various methods of enticing kids to transfer, the "R" word.
