Deerfield Beach running back Brandon Powell never stops working. Whether it be before school working with local speed trainer Tony Sands, during the school day maintaining his high GPA or after school on the practice field.
Known to his teammates by the nickname “BP”, Brandon helped lead the Deerfield Beach Bucks to a regional quarterfinal appearance last year. The 5-foot-10, 171-pound speedster rushed for over 1,000 yards in the process.
“I’m just trying to put Deerfield back on the map,” Powell said. Brandon is doing just that as colleges are flocking from all across the country to see this all-purpose back. He has offers from close to 30 colleges across the country. Those offers come from the likes of LSU, Auburn, California, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and West Virginia, just to name a few.
So what is it that keeps Brandon motivated to be the best? What keeps this high school football sensation on the right path and working towards his goals? The most humble reason of all, his grandmother.
“My grandma is my biggest support system. I’m just trying to make her proud,” said Powell. It’s safe to say that Brandon’s grandmother could be the happiest woman alive, and with good reason. Her grandson is planning on graduating early and won’t have to pay a dime for college as he gets to do what he loves and that is showcase his abilities on the football field.
Since his youth football days as a Deerfield Rattler, Brandon has maintained the same positive traits his father, Brian Powell said.
“He has always been a hard worker. He studies the game and knows the game. Plus, he always plays with a chip on his shoulder.” said Brian Powell.
In late June, Powell will decide where he is attending college. Regardless of his decision, the lucky university will be getting one of the highest character kids ever to come out of south Florida.
