haha.  Most of them are not on campus and go to Valencia all day.

But they would still qualify for the football team. Dillard acts as if academics and football are mutually exclusive. I have seen a few scholars play well in my day. Heck, Steven Billings Larson at Apopka is one of them!

yes Apopka benefited greatly and West orange is going to go 6-4 be a runner up and miss the playoffs.  They had first and goal from the 3 vs Olympia week 1 and down by 4 under a minute left and failed to score.  Tried a QB sneak and fumbled the snap.  That is what is going to keep them out.

Tough. With the first season under the new system almost in the books, I have mixed feelings about it. I kind of feel that some simpler adjustments could have yielded the stated objectives.

If Apopka lost to Oak Ridge they would be the #7 at 38.4 or 37.9 depending on Boone/Edgewater outcome and they could still be 6 if Boone lost.

So, essentially, Apopka is a big beneficiary of the new system, then. Under the old, they would have been eliminated last Friday. I kind of feel sorry for West Orange. Not really, but just saying ...

this is projected not what will show this week

    1. Winter Park if they beat Lake Mary if they lose they would flip with Wekiva

    2. Wekiva could move to 1 if Lake Mary beats Winter Park

    3. Flagler Palm Coast

    4. Seminole

    5. Apopka could move to 6 if Edgewater beats Boone, Lake Mary beats Winter Park and Seminole beats Bishop moore

6 Lake Mary could move to 5 or to 7

    7. Boone If they beat Edgewater and Lake Mary loses to Winter Park then 6

    8. Spruce Creek could move to 7 would need Boone to lose to Edgewater and Mt Dora beat gateway.

West orange needs Spruce Creek to lose to NSB to get in

Suppose Apopka lost to Oakridge? Unlikely, but strange things do happen. Would Apopka still be in ahead of West Orange? Both would be four loss teams and an Oakridge loss would be to a low category team.

I believe Hunter Pingston senior year was 2002.  We played them in the KOC.  Rock ledge win a state title in 2001 his junior year

Correct, Hunter was the starting QB in 2002, and it was his senior year. I remember that KOC. Apopka lost a tight game. Rockledge won state titles in both 2001 and 2002, when they repeated.

In 2001, I believe they beat St. Augustine. I don't remember who the other finalist was in 2002.

  6. I don't usually complain much about the officials as things usually even out. But there were a couple of blatant non-calls against Wekiva which should have been pass interference or holding, including one late in the game where Zion Hill was literally brought down by the Wekiva defender before the ball got there. There was also a strange delay of game call against Apopka after they had just gotten a first down on its final drive. They had not even gotten up to the line of scrimmage and the flag was thrown.

Wekiva is a very good team, especially defensively. Two of their three touchdowns, though, were off special teams and a pick six. However, I am not sure they are better than Apopka. Give them credit, they finally got the win. If Apopka makes the playoffs and sees them again, I think the scores will be reversed.

  7. I think Dillard is a solid, but not great, team this year. They are faced with a bad playoff situation as they will face a 6A, 16 team. It will be hard for this Dillard team to beat any of those four teams. They may have a chance against Norland, but I would still favor Norland.

Regarding how Dillard stacks up in Broward County, my feelings are as follows: Dillard is clearly not as good as St. Thomas, American Heritage, Cardinal Gibbons. That is un-disputable.

With respect to the next tier, I believe, from a distance, that Dillard is not as good as a Deerfield or Miramar. Dillard lost to Western on the field. So chalk that up for Western.  With respect to potential Dillard may well be as good as, or better than, Western. But they had their chance on the field and did not get the job done.

I would put Dillard somewhere in the middle of the second tier of Broward County teams. Perhaps closer to the top of it but not at the top.

How about that #7 national ranking for MNW?

Do you think they cared about  keeping that or moving up with a W?

Do you think MNW took this game as serious as a pre-season game?

From a distance, I think the game may have been a bit of a trap game for MNW. No, I am not suggesting they did not take it seriously. I am sure they did. However, it is possible that a sense of urgency on the part of 16-18 year old teenagers may not have been there.

I would reserve my opinion till they meet again in the playoffs. If they do, I would expect the Bulls to avenge this defeat.

Apopka is favored by 1 according to Pinkos.  If you just look at scores one would think Wekiva would be a small favorite.  I think their inability to score a bunch of points early in the season hurts their computer rankings because they didn't blow teams out.

Wekiva is only averaging 272 yards per game.  Apopka is averaging 397.1  The interior of Wekiva's defense is their strong point (3 D1 underclass D-lineman) and I also think their secondary is pretty good.  Apopka will need to wear down the Wekiva defense by having long drives and then hit them with an occasional play action to keep them honest and possibly get a big play in the passing game.  Apopka can't get put in second or third and long and penalties will probably kill any drive.  I think it will be low scoring but If I'm a betting man I'm betting on Coach D to find a way.

Wekiva's very strong defensive interior will mean Apopka will have trouble running the ball effectively if they just run their bread and butter plays. Third and long will kill Apopka drives. It is critical to have third and short situations if Apopka is going to move the ball and eat clock, which they will need to do to limit Wekiva's offensive production.

On defense, Apopka also needs to pressure Wekiva's QB. He can burn you with his legs and has a decent intermediate ball if you give him time to throw it.

I was told last week that even if Wekiva lost they would be the district champ but that is not the case.  I just ran the points and it appears if Apopka beats Wekiva they will edge them out for the district title with 42.4 or 41.9 points to Wekiva's 41.6.  Since it would be a three way tie with West Orange it goes to points.

This should be a great high school atmosphere.  I expect over 5k there to see it.  I will take Apopka 14-13.  Any thoughts?

I like Apopka, but this may reflect my bias. I don't know. If we go solely on how the teams have played this year, Wekiva is the favorite. Not by much, but they would be favored. With that said, Wekiva has made the playoffs only twice in their relatively short existence and have exited in the first round both times. I think Apopka's tradition and experience in big game situations and late season games of critical importance helps them gut out a very close win.

To do so, in my opinion, Apopka will need to have its best defensive game of the year and score at least 17 points.

It's all part of what high school football really means,  boys learning to be men and finding out what is important in life.  As fans I think we are all guilty of holding teenagers to the standards of professional players when most high school players won't even play college ball.  They played a good 4th quarter,  it was too little too late,  but they showed some fight.

Showing fight is what's it's all about. Most young people will face significant adversity during the course of life. If what they learned on the football field helps overcome it, then that's what the game's all about!

    Arnold            24

    Port St Joe  14  F

Not to take anything from Arnold but that was probably the worst 3 quarters of football PSJ has ever played.  I don't think there is a team in the state they would have beat tonight.  Coach Palmer's absence has really taken a toll the last few weeks prayers for a speedy recovery.

Sorry about the loss. Hope Coach Palmer has a full and speedy recovery.

How do you define a top tier team? What rules would you establish to define these teams?

You would have to have specific criteria laid out. These would have to be in plain, concise English that leaves no room for ambiguity. Anything less, and the whole concept of "top tier teams" creates more problems than it would solve. Just basing top tier on number/percentage of wins over a period may not be sufficient. Different teams play much harder or softer schedules which will impact their number/percentage of wins.

Call me a skeptic, but I think introducing top tier teams into the equation creates as many problems as it solves. It may be that reducing the number of classes by a class or two; eliminating districts that are less than 4 or 5 teams; and, if that were not feasible based on travel considerations, creating a limited number of regional wildcards, may be a better, more transparent solution.

Why not have a selection committee? The points will weight (and heavily, I’m sure) but a committee could try to make sure that anomalies like the one you mention are exceptions and not rules.

That may be subject to corruption or the appearance of such. Some teams would probably feel they were hosed by the powers on high!

What are your thoughts on Jones now that the season has progressed?   They started out a bit ugly against national power St. Johns College.    They went down BIG eearly and actually made the game somewhat respectable, and SJC turned out to be a very solid team.   Since then they've done very well.   One score that stands out to me is a 37-7 trashing of Bishop Moore.

Can they surprise and contend for 5A?

Jones is a very solid team. They could be the best in Metro Orlando, although there are about three other contenders for that spot. Being in Region 4, of 5A, they have a very tough road in 5A.

They would have to clear, potentially, both Cardinal Gibbons and American Heritage. If, somehow, they could get through Gibbons and American Heritage, I believe Jones would win the 5A title. They are that talented.

And, BTW, like him or not, Elijah Williams, their head coach, is competent. He had a couple wins over Apopka to prove it when he was at Orlando Oak Ridge. I am not sure about the full complement of assistants he has there with him.

Seminole is not explosive on offense. They lost their top 3 skill players last year to graduation in RB DJ Hampton, QB Kaylan Wiggins and WR Gabe Davis.  The young Qb is a nice replacement to Wiggins but he is still a freshman.  They don't have a WR near the talent of Davis or a RB near as explosive as Hampton.  I think the major issue is the running game.  They have very few runs over 20 yards and their top two RB's are averaging just over 5 yards a carry which sounds decent but for a high school that is really good they should be averaging around 8-9 yards a carry.  Against good teams I'm sure this average is more around 4 yds a carry.  Lake Brantley looked real flat to me against Seminole.  I was impressed with Seminole's defense vs Brantley but the offense still needed work.  It seems the offense hasn't really improved much probably because of the youth and lack of elite skill kids on offense. I'm sure an off season speed and strength program will help them and they will be much better on offense next year.  I think they should start playing #7 on offense more.  he appeared to be an elite skill player on defense.

He played a bit of offense in the OC University game. And, I agree with your assessment of him.

  18. In Central Florida, Bishop Moore too high. Wekiva, Winter Park and Lake Mary too low.

Also, your Central Florida is a pretty wide area. Many of the teams listed are in areas not traditionally regarded as Central Florida. You should probably have a Tampa Bay/West Central Florida area. I would say a Treasure Coast area too. But you probably don't have enough teams.
