  1. You mean confident, cocky, and condescending ? I've been working the ego a couple hours every day. Building a stash of abverbs, adjectives, and prepositional phrases to rain down terror on their fragile psyches. Wish me well Darter. Those boys from Cally, Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Georgia don't mess around. What they lack in intelligence they make up for with boyish bluster, immaturity, bold print, and unimaginable ignorance. Hopefully I'm ready. "Drummer, you ......
  2. I somewhat agree with "badbird." Deland's hiring of coach Steve Allen will end the mass exodus of athletic talent to Deltona and Orange City. The 'Dogs will stay home. I don't expect a large drop off in wins though. With their good stable coaching staff and finally a home field to play games on, the community and school support should be electric. I'm clueless to the 2018 schedule and the football roster. My opinions may be ill-informed, misguided, and just plain wrong. Oh well....
  3. The revolving coach's door at Atlantic High may have come to an end. DJ Mayo, a local athlete with prior head coaching experience (Tampa Chamberlain, Warner Christian) and many area ties was hired a couple months back. Last year he was the defensive coordinator at Port Orange Spruce Creek. Coming over with him is 6'2" , 220 lb, D-1 soph middle linebacker Ty Berrong. Atlantic High is situated half way between Mainland High to the north and Spruce Creek High to the south. All three schools are off the same road (Clyde Morris Blvd). With less then 5 straight miles to both schools, Atlantic "should" get some new prospects walking through the front door.
  4. Nice informative recap Darter. Coach D will always find a way to put points on the board. And with athletes aplenty he'll find some new young defensive stoppers. The Apopka Blue rolls on.....
  5. .......but don't forget, Bolles took it's first possession down inside the Bartow 10yd line. The 1st string all season starting QB then broke his ankle, and Bolles played with a back up the rest of the way. Not many teams would over came that. Also this was an early afternoon game played under beautiful clear blue skies in Daytona Beach. It was "COLD." Damn near froze my middle age a$$ off
  6. Like many schools of that era, Mainland High had to go with split sessions to accommodate the influx of students. At that time junior high schools were grades 7-9. So from 1969-1975 Mainland's student class schedule was 11-12 grade; 7am-12pm; 10grade, 12pm-5pm. Split sessions were ended with the building of Port Orange Spruce Creek in 1975.
  7. All black Campbell High changed to a 7th grade center and all high school students merged/moved to Daytona Beach Mainland in August of 1969. All black Chisholm High changed to a 7th grade center ( then to an elementary school ) and all high school students merged/moved to New Smyrna Beach High in August of 1969.
  8. After a "google" search I stand corrected from an earlier post. Darryl Dawkins was the 1st player to go from high school to the NBA. I knew Moses Malone went earlier but it was to the ABA ( which later merged with the NBA ). I mistakenly thought Bill Willoughby, from the Atlanta Hawks was the first. With OldSchoolLion now prowling the message board this sometimes forgetful old guy doesn't always remember things correctly as they were. My game needs up grading. I better check before posting
  9. Lion, the sad thing about high school dunking of the basketball was that it was outlawed during the early years of Florida's integration of public schools. Darryl Dawkins wasn't allowed to dunk in high school ! They, the rednecks policy makers, claimed it took away from the skill and beauty of the game. We know now, as then, it was all racist bull$hit. I'll bet most on this message board have never heard this before. Trust me, I witnessed this sorry time in our state history. * All the dunking was done in pre-game warm up, TRUTH !
  10. OldLion, I had the pleasure of seeing Dr Dunk, Dr Funkenstein, and your nicknames above for Orlando Evans great Darryl Dawkins. He and his teammates knocked my Mainland Buccaneers out of the playoffs in 1975 at their cracker box gymnasium. It was a sellout. We Daytona fans bitched and complained so much outside the school that Evans administrators let us in during halftime and we were stacked deep along the baselines and the four corners of the basketball court. My 6'5" buddy Tryone Gaddy screamed at Darryl as he ran by after a score. Dr D smiled, put up his hands, and "dwarfed" my giant friend. His high school size was Unbelievable. Later that year, he became the 2nd high school player EVER to be drafted into the NBA..... * side note to the young ones out there. DD was the original Shaq. A monster sized nice guy who liked to talk. Most of his aliases, and outlandish vocabulary stemmed from the George Clinton lead funk/rock band Parliament/ Funkadelic, featuring Bootsy Collins. They were from the planet Lovetron and they often lived around Chocolate City (Washington,DC). I still own several of their albums from the 70's
  11. Yes Carver (Delray Beach) was a Monster too. Played ball with NFL'er Charles "Dr Love" Cornelius, a Carver grad.
  12. Can't mention Ft Pierce Central without props to Randy "Sweetback" Walker. Best running back I ever saw.
  13. Broward, think that's tough ? See: Orlando Edgewater 2002- Miami Norland 21 Edgewater 20 (State Championship) 2003- Miami Carol City 13 Edgewater 0 (State Championship) 2004- Miami Killian 28 Edgewater 7 (State Championship) 2005- Palm Baech Gardens 10 Edgewater 7 (State Semi-Finals) , one week later PBG won Championship by 20pts.
  14. Happy birthday, I wish you the best.
  15. Yes, that's it. With in-season games against Cocoa, Bartram Trail, Dr Phillips, American Heritage-Plantation, Miami Central, Fort Pierce Central, etc, in the last decade, Vero was to scary for the Bucs to play in a "spring exhibition contest." I believe you were tongue in cheek, but just in case, Flotech, you better recognize
  16. NSB (6A) needs a new Head Coach. Doesn't Wilk live in that area, now ? .....just saying, no info
  17. We should get a few. I'm hearing our starting soph basketball point guard ( from Deland ) should have a good shot at the Bucs QB position. Could be much movement in the area...
  18. With Avantae Williams from IMG, now add soph QB Jadyn Nirschi, from Seabreeze High. Rumors circulating are this is only the beginning. Lookout Deltona and University High of Orange City, Mr Allen is on the prowl at Deland High
  19. ^^Lakeland Dreadnaught Rod Smart, big brother to fellow Dreadnaught Cris "I'm a white girl man" Rainey...entertaining family...still funny
  20. I'm not in your world, but '98-'18 is 20yrs. My mistake by using "over." I carelessly included Mainland's start of consecutive playoff appearances that began in 1994. As far as ignoring me, so be it. You're eerily similar to an adversary of mine that goes way back. Ever been a morph or a ball breaker from another message board ?
  21. Yes with all due respect, Mainland won Regional Championships (Final Fours) in 98, 02, 03, 04, 06, 11, 13, 14. Some of those went to the western panhandle by way of Jacksonville, while others went as far as Ft Myers through the Lakeland area. In the coverage area of the Orlando Sentinel Mainland was chosen "Team of the Decade" in the first ten years of this century. And since you have cluelessly mentioned our multiple troubles with that little 2A champion ( Hollywood Chaminade ) please do a quick fact check and tell us who you believe to be the best team in the state in 2003 ? Hint: check Mainland, Madison County, Chaminade in season opponents. This homer doesn't agree with your conclusions. Mainland has been an elite program for over 20yrs. Dade has definitely been our Achilles heel since being put in the southern bracket in 2011. 6A Dade's only beat themselves. County outsiders are rarely successful. http://lazindex.com/floridasbest.php
  22. Tell you what OldLion , if at some future date you are able to live as long as I have, you might at times be confused with a score or a final season record. Unlike yourself, I witnessed ALL OF THE GAMES ABOVE. I commend your investigative skills. But your flippant response to my beloved Buccaneers didn't sit well with me. Maybe I took it the wrong way, or maybe I didn't. Not to many Florida schools outside of Dade/Broward match up well with those two counties elite teams. The vast majority of those loses above were to eventual state champions. What team you pimp ? If you ain't above, we'd have probably beat you. Oh well....pleasant dreams.
  23. Continuing with the Truth: Coming off a down year, for Mainland, Bucs lose top 3 Qb's to graduation, also 4 of the top 5 Wr's, plus 2 starters on the offensive line. The Kick/Punter heads to college. On the defensive side, we lose the #1 tackler (LB), the top returning LB/player to transfer (Deland), 2 starters on the DL, and a D-1 safety (UF leaning). Worried ? Not really. Only Lakeland with 25 straight yrs to the playoffs tops Mainland's 24 years for Florida public high schools. Don't mean to overstate the obvious, but Mainland reloads rather then rebuilds. With open enrollment this trend "should" remain.
  24. I'll tell you FloTech what Vero will get when Mainland comes down there. They'll see aggressive speedy athletes with no fear or intimidation. It's not in their DNA to play any other way. At times it bites them, but the coaches never let it get out of hand. It should be a good contest for both teams. Polar opposites doing battle. See you there..
