  1. You bring back districts in lower classes and you lose a bunch of teams back to independent within a few years.  A few teams right now are in the playoffs or on the edge that were independent the better part of last 8 years because they were forced to play teams they just couldn't handle and kids were leaving.  Catch 22. Does the FHSAA want to lose people again? It is also not as simple as building a program up to compete either in today's modern day of transfers. Average small schools with 25-35 kids can't afford even 2 senior transfers because they sucked one year.

  2. Miramar just forfeited 4 games for use of illegal player. Drops their record to 1-7. This wasn't taken into account for this weeks rankings. This will affect teams like Dillard who already has a horrible OWP. Now factor in a 1-7 team instead of a 5-3 team for next week.

  3. I'm going to go out on a limb and say there was probably something else going on on the sidelines or some other factor then just quitting that people in the stands or Dillard fans don't know. The coach has been at NE 3-4 years and they have lost plenty including blowouts to Chaminade and Dillard in the past without quitting. It wouldn't make sense to just quit now. 42-0 in the 3rd isn't even that bad once the running clock starts you can get that over pretty quick with out reaching 60. Also, I seen some clips of the game. Dillard wasn't running over or hurting NE players oustide of the DL just being too much for NE OL. They really just were better athletes in open space and NE couldn't tackle them.

  4. They were 100% live, but only a half game. They have them every year in Dade-Broward. Not sure this year, but were held at FIU for a bit. County invites teams. 12 this year.  Yes, some Broward Public schools are benefiting from the transferring and can now compete with privates, but overall it is hurting Broward. More teams are falling apart and instead of having a bunch of competitive games you see more blowouts.  Flanagan is a great example of an end result of what you get with these transfers. Do you really want to see a bunch of teams turn onto that or 7 games that aren't even worth watching on your schedule.

WOOOOOONDERFUL! SOOOOOO, these folks travel 300 miles from Hotlanna, not knowing WHAT'S WHAT! We got to Troy University back in May, thinking that THAT was a full game scenario, for three quarters! Only to find out at KO, that it would be modified with no hit on the QB, and no runbacks! Even the play by play guy on TV was bummed out!

I would say your coaches and AD dropped the ball if you showed up not knowing that.  Coaches talk and decide this stuff weeks before the actual games and they should now to ask because it is standard especially if it was a spring game.

  6. The question is are you going to find an independent school that isn't part of the FHSAA that is worth transferring to distance, money, and competition wise. As someone stated, most independent schools are still FHSAA and it would still hold.

  7. At the end of the day, it is HS basketball. Most people aren't traveling hours to watch that regardless of where you put it.  Not regular people that live by and went to the school who have jobs or kids of their own or teachers.  You have about 15 kids on each team. So if each kid gets a parent or two and siblings then add on some extra family members, the extreme fan (most schools don't have this), some teachers (Not even the majority would travel) and admin. That is what you are drawing.  That is only going to be a couple hundred no matter where you put it. So, who cares if the arena looks funny. At least it is neutral and both teams are traveling similar distances. It isn't like it is getting watched nationally and people are staring at the crown.  You are looking at the court if streaming a game or whatever.

Proportionately speaking, there are several Southern states, Hawaii and American Samoa(see stats on Samoan players in the NFL) that are at least as deep as Florida in terms of talent.  With the exception of southeast FL, the state of Florida as a whole is not terribly special compared to the aforementioned places.  We have athletic " black holes" in Florida.

Proportionately speaking, I would bet that the percentage of good/very good, unrated kids in states like Alabama and Mississippi s greater than Florida because ...

    • their population sizes are dwarfed by Florida's,
    • those states do not have the reputation of Florida so kids don't get as much love from the rating services
    • they do not have nearly as many "big" schools with the accompanying big names on the national scene

Alabama is a great example of a team that historically has picked up a number of "no name" kids from within the state.  A while back I did a thread that demonstrated how Texas blows Florida away on the elite sprinting scene.

There are places in Alabama and Mississippi that will remind one of the Muck...and are loaded with "no name" talent.  If one has never lived in the backwoods of the South, it is hard for one to appreciate what I am saying.

I was speaking more to the fact that not all, but many people from Florida tend to act like the top talent in many states isn't equal or close to Florida when they are. Have top Florida talent is great, but not necessary. They just don't have the number of athletes that we do or depth.  Proportionately, you are 100% correct. I am saying more just down right overall numbers though.

I know where you are coming from.  The little history lesson I gave above about Hardee , going independent served a purpose. The early 70's was a period of some really down seasons.  Going independent got the program back on track.  Staying independent I think hurt the program and its effects still remains.  1983 we played in a district.  We should have stayed in a district from that point on.  Instead they went back independent and it cost us.

I don't know enough about that school, so hurt in which way.  If kids are enjoying themselves and are proud walking the halls being independent then it isn't a problem to me. Only people that care are outsiders in many cases that don't really care what the kids think.

I will say though that if you are independent then you should be in a conference.  That way you can over time have the experience of playoffs and rivalries even if not for a state championship.  That is better for a program then just being independent and picking random schools every year.

  10. For every school, it is not as simple as putting money in or giving up.  Some schools whether because of academic standards, demographics, location will never turn it around by standards of some people on here. It is about the kids having fun and competing for them.  I have been at schools that were public whole time and been to playoffs. I have also been at a school who was blown out by 50 every week no matter who the coach was.  They went independent. Guess what? The kids playing and student body were happy going 5-5 to 8-2 every year. Numbers of players on roster went from 20 players to 40s and a large JV squad. They did not care who the name of the other team was or that they couldn't win a state title. They were competing against equal schools. Losing by 50 won'r ruin a kid. Losing by 50 every game every year is embarrassing for them. The switched back to FHSAA and above 4A, so have districts and now are back to losing by 50 and had to cancel the Jv season. Varsity back in the 20s.   Both sides did compromise for 1A-4A and it is better.  The smaller schools who have a harder time turning it around came back to the FHSAA. The FHSAA agreed to get rid of districts, so they could schedule their own opponents. That was the compromise. Not perfect, but better.  As far as the point system, nothing will be perfect. It is impossible. This is getting it right for the most part though. A good team might get left out here or there.  Happens at every level in every sport.

  11. Some of you are looking at from outside or fan of overall product of FHSAA as a whole. Try looking form individual schools point of view. Some don't have the money to compete or travel.  Also, some know they aren't state championship material or sending kids other D3 here or there to college.  However, they still have kids that love football and just want to be apart of a team and compete against similar schools.  Looking at it from the outside would take that away from them.  These kids have 4 years left until they are adults and will never play a sport again in most cases. Getting blown out every week and money is why many went independent. It is also why the FHSAA set it up this way now, so these schools can come back to Fhsaa and still have their "conferences."

  12. Classes are a problem for some teams, which is why independent works.  For example, one school that is struggling, but not named is a 5A school after going back to districts. Their problem is that they are a 100% magnet HS.  8th graders must have a 2.5 GPA and 3/3 on standardized test to even apply. Then they have a straight lottery draw with 250 kids being taken out of 800 applying.  No concessions. Even if an athlete has the grades still have to go to lottery.  Once in the school, they need to maintain a 2.5 GPA taking all AP or Honors classes. If they fall below they get kicked out of school. This really hits 9th and 10th graders or aren't used to these standards and up to 1/3 of JV team is removed each year. Also, they are a zero zone school, so nobody gets an automatic bid. Students live as far as 45 minutes away and need to catch the bus at 4:00 am and then stay through for practices or games. You can't build. Some schools need exceptions made or will always struggle.

  13. Coral Springs HS has as many as 5 potential D1 defenders. 2 DBs already have big time offers. Entire secondary is 6’0 plus. Offense has talent to compete with the average schools will probably struggle against top teams though.

  14. Who were they supposed to be getting? Last years starter is a senior and the incoming 2020 kid from Piper both still have deerfield listed on their twitters and been retweeting deerfield stuff.

I don’t know why a younger kid who started as a freshman at Piper and with offers would transfer and also stay just to sit the bench. The same for the senior. I wouldn’t stay if my school undercut me and brought in a transfer to start over me my senior year if I had a smaller offer or 2.

  15. Let's just say unless a private school wants you it isn't as easy as just transferring for every kid.  Odds are a 5-6 team like South Broward doesn't have 20 kids a STA or Gibbons wants.  I'm sure they could get more money from a Westminster or Pine Crest, but what is the point of going to one of them.  If a private school wants you you will know.  I have had parents of big private schools we don't even play at our games with financial aid packets and applications already printed out to give to certain players after the game.  Have also had head coaches of private schools we don't play have the guts to come right up to certain players after our games and give them their emails and talk back and forth.  Right  before the talks get too specific into money they say come in to school for a visit, so no record of it. 90% of the time if a kid transfers to a big private school they have been talked to.  Always exceptions to the rule though.
