I am not one to make excuses...especially against referees after a loss.  I always found it counter-productive in the long run.  Those striped shirt guys have to make decisions in a split second, and I am sure the human factor comes into play more often than not.  Its not like they have replay (to look back on) to see if it was the correct call or not.  Beating them over the head on one call will virtually assure you you will not get the next close call if it presents itself...just my opinion.

That being said, there were some questionable calls last night as there always are.  I am sure Coach J wont be challenging any calls after the fact...he does a great job of getting his point across during the game.  We lost...we will move onto next year.

We did not line up very well.

Vero did a fine job last night.  Despite being one-dimensional, Palmetto had some athletes on offense that needed to be stopped, and Vero's D contained well.

I thought Palmetto's defense was very well-rounded.  Their db's seemed to be there on every pass play, and we know Vero has some good wr's.  Palmetto's D-line provided constant pressure and contained well at the edges.  Play that game 10 times and I think Vero's offense would be routinely challenged...as would most offenses around the state.  No shame losing to that team and great effort by Vero.

Coach just curious couldn’t catch the game last night (honey do list that went until midnight) I did see some comments about some “hiccups” and them maybe getting an extra down or two. Anything to this? Are you guys gonna submit tape to the FHSSA? Not trying to drum up any excuses or drama just honestly wondering as a fan/alum, and not taking anything away from Palmetto they to are a very talented team. Proud of the young men this messed up season they and all schools had, they should be too!

Ah, young man, your wife has trained you well and already has you programmed I see. :P  They are masters at this.  But remember, we ARE the dominant gender.

I watched the game last night.  The officials definitely made some questionable calls.  Palmetto's D was very aggressive and there were several questionable no-calls at the line.  I think that just encouraged Palmetto even more.

At the end of the day,  Vero's offense could not get a rhythm, partly due to to Palmetto's D and partly due to a qb who had an off night.  If not for the trick play, they may have been shut out.  I honestly think the better team won last night regardless of any referee mishaps.  Am not taking anything away from Vero.  Vero's D has done a very nice job the past few years.  But their offense has only managed 7 points in each of their past three playoff losses.  Defense usually wins championships, but that assumes a reasonable level of offensive output.

On another note, I don't care if Vero played multiple south FL teams this season, I don't think it would have necessarily changed the outcome last night.

    Class 8A - Miami Palmetto.

    Class 7A - Aquinas

    Class 6A - Miami Central

    Class 5A - American Heritage

    Class 4A - Cardinal Gibbons

    Class 3A - Chaminade-Madonna

    Class 2A - Champagnat Catholic.

Any chance that this happens where all SFL teams win in Tally, and where dominace occurs again for the Dade/Broward teams.

I cannot see Palmetto winning with their one-dimensional office.  If they advance, Apopka or Seminole will likely shut them down.

  4. For some perspective...in 1982, St Thomas Aquinas finished 6-1 in district play.  They were in a district with 7 other Broward County teams(6 public and 1 private).  Of the 6 games against public schools, 4 were decided by 2 points or less and one was decided by 14 points.  That same year, 14/28 first round playoff games were decided by a TD or less.

Back in the day, one could go to any hs football game during the regular season and have a reasonable chance of finding a competitive game.  Nowadays, even in the early rounds of the playoffs, one has to search to find a competitive game.

I would not write Steinbrenner off just yet. They made the state semis a year ago and appear to be building a decent program. Yes, they had a down year but would give the the benefit of the doubt for at least another year.

Am not writing them off, Darter.  The list above is a snapshot in time.  If we did the same exercise last year or the year before, it might look slightly different, but I think the overall trend would be the same, ie overall lack of parity.

One exception to the solid, stingy defense statistics, is 2012 Apopka which came into the finals giving up about 17 points per game. But in the final it was again the offense that got them through as they won that one with a record 53-50 score and there was about 1200 yards of total offense in the game with Cypress Bay.

Apopka is an outlier on multiple fronts, ie winning state titles with more losses than most.

  7. The purpose of this thread is to show the significant disparity in talent in Hillsborough County.  Of 29 public schools in Hillsborough County, there are arguably...

    • 5 "Have's"
    • 4 "In Betweens"
    • 20 "Have Not's

And we wonder why certain teams are having difficulty finding "local" teams to give them legitimate competition.  As I have stated elsewhere, this is Florida's dirty little secret(lots of poor/marginal teams), and it is not just an issue in Hillsborough County.

    The Have's

    Armwood 5-4

    Berkeley Prep 7-2

    Bloomingdale 12-0

    Gaither 11-1

    Jesuit 13-0

    Tampa Bay Tech 8-4

    In Between

Hillsborough 8-2 (lost 56-10 to Armwood)

    Jefferson 7-2

Newsome 7-3 (lost 38-10 to Bloomingdale)

    Tampa Catholic 7-3

Wharton 7-2 (lost 21-7 to Newsome)

    The Have Not's

Alonso 2-7 (lost 56-7 to Steinbrenner)

Blake 1-7 (lost 49-15 to jefferson)

Brandon 0-9 (lost 72-0 to Hillsborough)

Chamberlain 6-4 (lost 34-6 to Gaither)

Durant 5-5 (lost 30-0 to Bloomingdale)

East Bay 2-7 (lost 47-6 to TB Tech)

Freedom 0-9 (lost 47-8 to gaither)

King 5-4 (lost 52-18 to Hillsborough)

Lennard 4-5 (lost 26-7 to Newsome)

    Leto 1-8

Middleton 4-5 (lost 25-0 to Hillsboorugh)

Plant 2-6 (lost 45-7 to Armwood)

Plant City 5-4 (lost 37-20 to Bloomingdale)

Riverview 1-8 (lost 75-14 to TB tech)

Robinson 5-4 (lost 55-14 to Jesuit)

    Sickles 2-6

Spoto 3-6 (lost 62-0 to Hillsborough)

Steinbrenner 4-3 (lost 34-10 to TB Tech)

Strawberry Crest 1-8 (lost 62-0 to Bloomingdale)

Sumner 7-1 (played an Independent, weak schedule)

  8. Besides Rockledge and Cocoa, these are the notable high schools playing hs football in Brevard County and their records this season.

Does anyone see a problem here?

Astronaut    5-2 (lost 27-7 to Satellite)

Bayside     4-5 (lost 53-8 to Cocoa and lost 35-7 to Rockledge)

Cocoa Beach     0-8 (lost 63-0 to Satellite)

Eau Gallie     7-2 (lost 27-13 to Cocoa)

Heritage     1-7 (lost 49-0 to Cocoa and lost 54-7 to Rockledge)

Melbourne     2-6 (lost 46-0 to Cocoa and lost 40-0 to Rockledge)

Melbourne Central Catholic     3-5   (lost 35-0 to Satellite)

Merritt Island     4-2 (lost 22-8 to Satellite)

Palm Bay     1-7 (lost 56-0 to Cocoa and lost 41-0 to Rockledge)

Satellite     7-1 (lost 41-7 to Cocoa)

Space Coast     2-5 (lost 37-0 to Satellite)

What hurt brevard teams was being forced to just play in county teams. Both Rockledge and Cocoa had pretty good schedules before that change was made. They still could've played a couple out of county teams. The 2 Georgia games. And Chaminade would've gave Cocoa a great measuring point for them against south florida teams

In 2011, Cooper City played St Thomas Aquinas.  CC"s schedule that year is below.  In the meantime, St Thomas had already faced 3 nationally ranked teams (Prattville(AL), De La Salle(CA) and Miramar(FL), as well as a tough Cypress Bay team.  The result...one of the most shocking upsets in Florida history, as Cooper City defeated Aquinas at the Raiders home field.  Strength of schedule meant nothing that day.  That was a gritty team taking care of business.

    Non-district game

    *Everglades 4-6

    *West Broward 1-9

    *Monarch 3-7

    Nova 3-7

    Plantation 5-5

    *Western 5-5

    South Broward 4-6

Gaither was undefeated as well going into the Minneola game with a win over Armwood.  Minneola had a loss to Seminole (no shame there). I expected more out of Gaither on the road.

I was really surprised by that result as well.  Gaither has been on a team on the rise in recent years.  Guess it goes to show that improvement is not always linear.

Lol that's true but the toughest games those 2 had in the regular season were against each other

There was a time we normally only played "local" teams during the regular season.  And before computers, one might know relatively little about your playoff opponent.  Heck, 50 years ago you might not find out a certain playoff opponent had a new coach until the game.

I mention this because there is a lot of emphasis today on strength of schedule to get one's team ready.  And I find it curious because in the old days a coach basically had to have his team ready for anything at any time.

I hear some folks today talk about the need to schedule south FL teams to get exposed to their level of speed.  In the late 1970's and early 1980''s, the big school final often featured a south FL team vs a north Fl team.  In those matchups, the north FL schools won more than they lost.  They did it though gritty determination and good fundamentals.

As an example, the 1976 and 1977 Carol City teams were excellent.  When they played Godby and Choctawhatchee in the finals, the speed of Carol City must have been awe-inspiring to those north FL schools.  Yet, Godby won and Choctawhatchee lost via a last minute field goal.

Sorry if I sound preachy.  Just trying to present another perspective.

Hillsborough does it all the time.:)

  13. Bartram Trail, Tampa Bay Tech and Columbia all averaged 20 or more points allowed this season-to-date and allowed 35 or more points last night.  Hard to make the Final 4 with those kind of numbers.

Since 2000, Bartram Trail has lost 14 playoff games in which the opposing team scored 27 or more points.

Since 2000, Columbia has lost 12 playoff games in which the opposing team scored 27 or more points.

Since 2000, Tampa Bay Tech has lost 11 playoff games in which the opposing team scored 34 or more points.

All three of these teams average between 24-29 points scored per playoff game(2000-2019).  What's been holding them back, to some extent, is defensive performance in the big games.

  14. 5A Rickards won its first region title ever against Baker County.\

5A Dunnellon will attempt to win its first state semi since 1979 when it travels to play Rickards next week.

5A Gadsden County did something for the first time in 20 years...hold Bolles to 7 points or less in regulation at Bolles' home field.  Only Marianna(2000) and Taylor County (1978) have ever done that.

  15. 7A Bloomingdale won its first region title ever, in only its second region title game appearance ever.

7A St Thomas will be playing a playoff game in Hillsborough County for the first time since 2001 when they come to Bloomingdale next week.  STA beat Jefferson in 2001 and 1996.

7A Edgewater has never traveled west of Tallahassee for a playoff game, so its trip to Niceville next week for a state semifinal will be a first for them.

Didn’t Palmetto play at Lake Nona two weeks ago and at Treasure Coast last week?

You are absolutely right.  Duh on my part.  This was their first year playing a playoff in the playoffs outside Miami-Dade.  That's what I had on my mind.  I corrected my original post.
