  5. Playoff Firsts

    8A Palmetto won its first region title ever.  Interestingly, this is the first year Palmetto has ever played in the playoffs outside Miami-Dade county.  Despite playing their first game on 10/30 and losing their starting qb against Dr Phillips in a first round playoff game, Palmetto's D has enabled them to advance.  They have allowed only only 27 points in regulation in their 4 playoff games. 

    8A Osceola has never traveled south to play a playoff game, so it will be a first when the Kowboys travel to Miami to play Palmetto in a state semifinal.

    Are you aware they lost their qb(3-star Pro) earlier in the playoffs and a wr is running the wildcat?

    Seriously, buddy, there is not some magic resource out there has it all...at least not one that I know of.  I have kept many records over the past 50 years.  Some folks have made great efforts to compile seasonal records of specific teams, ie nolebull.

  11. Defense Analysis of 6A-8A Teams Playing Tonight

    Below are the average points per game allowed this season by each of the 6A, 7A and 8A teams still alive in the playoffs.  It's skewed for Miami Central because they have played so few games.  What does the data mean?
     
    Well, teams that allow on average more than 14 points per game don't typically win state titles.  That's a fact supported by data over the years.  The data doesn't work the other way.  In other words, the data does not necessarily support that the team with the least points allowed will do better. 
     
    For instance, Mitchell has a great average, but that may be due to a very week schedule.  One might ask, "What if a team had a super tough schedule and that drives their average up?"  It doesn't seem to matter.  Many state champions of the past, especially in recent years, have played brutal schedules, yet still do not typically allow more than 14 points per game, on average.  Let's see if any of the teams with higher points allowed averages get exposed tonight on defense.

  12. What's Happened to Defense in the State Finals?

    When one looks at the data below, it begs the question "why?"  Have offenses gotten more explosive?  Is there not as much emphasis on defense as in the past?  Has the increase in classifications resulted in less parity?  etc etc  Opinions?

    Below is the average number of points scored by the state champions in each decade.  

    1970's 23 points

    1980's 26 points

    1990's 28 points

    2000's 31 points

    2010's 36 points

    Prior to 2010, there was only one year in which the average number of points scored by all state champions was 40 or more...42 in 2005.  In the 2010's, we experienced 3 such years (41 in 2011, 40 in 2013, and 43 in 2015).  

    In 2013, the biggest scores were in the upper classes.  In the 2014, the biggest scores were in the lower classes.  So, it is not as if the big scores this decade are all coming from a certain class(es).

    In case you are interested, below is the average number of points scored by the state champions from each year between 2000-2019.  The 2002 and 2003 finals were great...only one blowout each year and lots of tight games.

    #6 I'll give you credit, but somebody on the list went 15-0 earlier the same day.  Who?  And someone NOT on the list went 15-0 the day before both of them(the first team ever to go 15-0).  Who?

    #7 Godby is correct.  Godby beat Carol City in the 1976 4A final(the biggest class at that time) to cap an undefeated 14-0 season.

    The first team on the list to go 14-0 was definitely old school.  The year they went undefeated was their first state title and even their first year in the playoffs.  The team they beat in the title game was also in their first title game and is on this list as well.
