Quick google search, not saying, I agree, but same data about concussions.

I think I once read that cheerleaders actually have the most major injuries though.

The linked study refers to girls soccer as the primary culprit of concussions. However, it does not address the long term consequences of these injuries sustained by them. Do they go on to develop CTE or other serious neurological impairment?

And, it does not address soccer versus football where boys are concerned. Is there ready data comparing these two sports? And if yes, have studies been done tracking the long term impact from playing these two sports?

I grew up in a country that played soccer and next to track it was the most popular youth sport. Now I readily admit that as a third world country the best data was not kept. However, as someone that was involved with the sport there, I can't recall any cases of long term impairment been reported. In fact, if you look at the game at its highest level, meaning the top clubs of Germany, England, Spain and others, the number of athletes that have suffered significant impairment as a result of playing soccer are far less then football. And it makes sense. While soccer is a contact sport, what passes for a legal tackle in football, would result in a red card in soccer.

I am not an enemy of football by any means. In fact I have enjoyed the game and had I been exposed to it would likely have played.  However, I do take exception to those that try and equate the two sports as there is a wide disparity between the two.

    Soccer = brain trauma

far more than football, but there is no political agenda against soccer.

That is totally untrue. There is way more brain trauma in American Football. I think I know a thing or two about soccer. But why don't you point me to the research since you make your statement so emphatically.

  3. The article was an interesting read. While it did not conclude that the changes to the brain observed resulted in changes in personality or cognitive functions, it did point to significant observed changes in the brain. The size of the sample (16), raises questions. However, with that said, it clearly points to the necessity for more research to be conducted.

While I have been a fan of the high school game for over 20 years now, I would not want my entertainment to be at the expense of the young players' futures.

If managing money was common sense, we would not have budget deficits and most of the country living paycheck to paycheck.

Sometimes I think it's deliberate that such skills are not taught in school. As to our budget deficit and national debt situation, we, as a country get away with it because of the dollar's status as the primary reserve currency. If and when that changes, we will be in for a rude awakening as our economic situation will worsen dramatically.

In 2015, Swinney made the following statement  “As far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me.  I’ll go do something else because there’s enough entitlement in this world as there is.”

If college football players are truly amateurs, why do they need a coach who makes $8-10 million per year to coach them?

He does not want them paid because there would be less for him. The story is as old as humanity.

Given the short careers of football players in particular, they absolutely should be paid to play in college. Either that, or they should be eligible for the NFL draft a year after graduating high school. As things stand, the average NFL career is no longer than the average college career. That's a very small window to get real money.

Now that they don't have to compete against each year in the playoffs which team has best chance to win title? Northwestern? Carol City? Central? All three? Could these Miami rivals do a clean sweep from 4a-6a ?

If they are as strong as in recent years, yes, they could. TCA also has a much better chance this year, too.

After all, you wouldn't play the stock market based entirely on historic data.

Yes, that is the best way to play the market. But you have to breakdown the data into different historical periods and assign weights to the data, with the most recent being the strongest in determining short to intermediate term price performance in the security or average you are trading.

This may mark the beginning of the rise of Windermere High, and the decline of West Orange, as a football program. Bob Head was a very good football coach who got the most out of the kids he coached. Sorry to see his tenure at West Orange end this way and hope that: a) he will get a second chance elsewhere; and B) something like what happened never happens again.

...8 of the better football programs in the state, and all of them are "fair," at best, in basketball.  Some of the following are downright terrible in basketball over the past couple of years.

    Armwood

    Carol City

    Cocoa

    Columbus

    Mandarin

    Miami Central

    Northwestern

    South Dade

It could be the culture at the school, or the coaching. For years Apopka was a football/baseball school, but was mediocre at best in basketball. This year, for the first time since 1963 or 64, they have a basketball team that may make a deep run. The program started to turnaround when they got a coach who knew how to be successful. The talent was always there, it just did not manifest itself on the court.

Funny how Willie didn't ever get past the first half of season one before his head was being put on the chopping block. And how'd the Wonder Kid from UCF do at Nebraska in his first year ?  No crystal ball here, only an observation....umh (lingering)

Frost is going to end up regretting he left UCF. I know why he did, and in his situation, I may have too. But in terms of future success, I think he made a big mistake. UCF was a program waiting to explode to the upside once the fossil was put out to pasture.

    The plot thickens

Some  women have a habit of retracting their statements when things involve LEO, or in this case dismissal. It does not mean she was not abused. And, don't get me wrong, not being familiar with the situation, I am not saying she was, just that the retraction does not necessarily mean she was not.

The best thing Deandre can do is move on with his life. He should take some time to reflect and after that see if he can find a spot elsewhere. But if his football days are over, then he needs to make sound plans for the rest of his life.

I first saw him play his sophomore season when he started for Olympia. While he impressed me some, I was never sold on him as a QB. That said, I am sorry his situation has spiraled downward.

Voters will decide in March on whether or not to put $25M into fixing Lockhart up (additional money is being sought for other parks and a police station).

It could be used for sport/music events or a golf driving range or amusement/theme/water park or aviation related businesses or a charter school.

OMG,  did not realize this had happened to Lockhart. I took in a game there back in the early part of the 2000s. I did not realize it had been abandoned.

Best D my Mandarin  team faced all year along with Raines.  However, i have no clue how much Wekiva is returning because they had alot of senior key pieces like Mandarin did.

That sounds about right. Over the last three seasons they have been able to reload. Not sure what effect the departure of Apopka's HBC will have for them.

My feeling is that their path to state may be a bit easier in 7A. However, with St. Thomas as the likely opponent, that is probably a higher hurdle to climb than Columbus (a good team), was.

  14. Thanks. I have been to a couple games at Manatee in the not too distant past. The last one was in 2013, when I saw them play University School. The area around the school itself, did not look dangerous to me. In fact, if I remember correctly, I parked my car on the street and walked a few blocks to the school's stadium which was across the street from the school. But I have no perspective on what the area used to be like, nor can I vouch for the rest of West Bradenton.

The school's main building reminded me of what is now Howard Middle School in Orlando, but had been Orlando High School before it morphed into two separate schools, Boone High and Edgewater High.

Oh wow! Armwood has finally returned to play an OOS game. I think this is there first since 2011 or 2012 correct?

Yes, it is difficult for Hillsborough County teams to clear significant travel (even in-state) with the local school board administration.

It's probably one of the reasons Armwood has been pounded by Dade teams recently. In the early 2000s they held their own with the Booker T's of the world.

I personally cant stand the state of Georgia and since I recently retired I'm evaluating where I want to go. My heart is telling me go back to Florida, but other than the Gulf of Mexico......Manatee County when I visit has changed for the worse......much worse in fact!

Football wise Ive not been able to get into the HS football scene here at all.......maybe Im just way too biased about Florida to allow my mind to open to it. The Gwinnett area has put out its share of quality teams, Buford HS is just down the road from me. Clarke Central HS was still a state power in Athens with Billy Henderson coaching when I moved here......so its not because I dont have opportunities to see quality HS football..................something about Georgia in general just turns me off......if it hadnt been for the job I would have gotten out long ago..............again being retired now has allowed me to ponder my options.....I don't anticipate staying much longer.

Sorry to hear that. What are the major changes and what do you think caused them?

Serious question...why is this the case?  Since when is Ga such a rich state?  I mean I agree and it's true, but why?  I highly doubt this was always the case.

Georgia is relatively poor, poorer than Florida. But football, even at the high school level, has the ear of those that matter. It's reflected in attendance at games. So, that influence leads to coaches getting a much better deal.

It is very hard for a Florida coach with an offer in Georgia to turn it down unless he is financially independent or is not motivated by money.

on that note, it wasnt that long ago one of the gierke brothers had them back to like 10-0 or something.  they kept the kids from the area from transferring to surrounding schools.  and some great coaching, kids bought in and they were really good.  there was a newspaper article about the quick turnaround, 1-9,6-4,9-1 or something like that.  then he got fired?  and they fell apart again

Chip G had health issues and between that and a lack of administrative support when the Olympia principal came over (she had run Bob Head away from Olympia), he called it a day. Some of the staff he had at Evans for that brief run are now at Wekiva and have created a thorn for the Darters.
