Have you watched the 4S Championship game?

No, that was the one game in Ft. Lauderdale that I have not had a chance to watch yet, because I had to work. I do plan on viewing the game when I get a chance to sit down with enough time for that. I am not going to defend all of the officiating in some of the state title games.

Hey, I'm going to be out-of-pocket for the next week or so, so I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year.   With a couple of exceptions, I haven't met anyone on this site in person, but nevertheless, we all seem to have a connection (even when we don't agree on things . . . most of the time).  For that, I'm grateful.   Wishing you all a safe New Year's Eve and a prosperous 2023.

Happy New Year, and a great Resolution for many people should be to treat officials the way that the mascot treated the Referee in the Cheez-It Bowl Game. A great pat on the back, and a thumps-up go a long way. Many others can learn from this example.

For Saturday's games in Ft. Lauderdale, I thought Lakeland and Venice both 'traveled well' and brought good crowds.  Same with Apopka Saturday night.  But credit to Columbus - they darn near filled up the home team side of the stands.   It was a sea of red.   Granted, they have proximity on their side, but I was impressed.

Close games and great attendance. The FHSAA might be on to something here. My valid point is confirmed again.

Thanks for sharing the attendance figures that are a little eye opening particularly since the numbers for most years are disappointing compared to 2007.  Also interesting that this years totals were the most since then (15 years ago).  Folks can draw their own conclusions of why this year was the best in your sample.

Another reason why the Metro and Suburban Classifications worked and were successful. No, I don't not get tired of being right all the time.

Jambun, I'll make a deal with you:  as soon as my wife says those words to me, I'll say them to you.

That said, your response is reminiscent of the scene from A Few Good Men where Col. Jessup says:

"I have neither the time, nor the inclination to explain myself, to a man who rises and sleeps, under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and than questions the manner in which I provide them! I’d rather you just said ‘thank you’, and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn, what you think you are entitled to!"

I never saw that movie, but I do know the true story that inspired it.  The Unsolved David Cox murder case.

As Jambun82 originally pointed out, the championship games were much closer this year -- 5 games decided by 7 points or less vs. 2 games decided by 7 points or less last year: two overtime games this year vs. zero last year.  Looking at all playoff games, last year there were 193 games: the median point differential was 25 points; 61 games (32%) were running clock (35+ points).  This year, there were 216 games: the median point differential was 20 points; 47 games (22%) were running clock games.  So this year's playoff games on average were closer with fewer blowouts.  Those are the objective facts, and one of the goals of the "competitive balance" restructuring.  But there are also subjective and/or emotional arguments.  An impartial observer would have to agree that the new system benefited the elite suburban teams, while adversely affecting the average to below-average metro teams.  Whether the upheaval was worth it depends on your perspective.  The same system will be in effect next year, and we will have to see where it goes in 2024.

    Thank you, Dr. D.

As long as there are 9 teams claiming a state championship and there are 90 point blowouts in district games, the system is silly.  Shuffling the semi-final matchups made the finals closer, which is okay.  Overall, I can't support this system because it only stinks slightly less.  Now that the season is over, we have to watch STA and Central fight over a MNC, when they never played each other and are 20 miles apart...and Lakeland can beat them both.

What is your solution then, know-it-all?

  9. 6 hours ago, Floridaatlantic1 said:

I never said poor teams win a state title.  I wanted to keep the system the same so a district title or making the playoffs was realistic for metro teams that don’t cheat and recruit.  The promotion idea is a real way to get parity without doing a private public split that’s not allowed.  Isn’t the suburban a lower pooer division right now.  You already degraded lake  wales championship because they would have got crushed by central if old system. Suburban is minor leagues

You would find something wrong in any Classification.

I was thinking this was a rhetorical question, but apparently is was not.  B)

Jambun, in order to answer this question, I would need to look back and find your posts from months ago (and not your post from 4 days ago) to see what you posted.   Admittedly, I will, on occasion, waste my time researching some pretty trivial stuff, but I'm not inclined to go back to determine what your original position was on the new classification system when it was first announced.

Snarkiness aside, I'll assume that you thought dividing the state into Suburban and Metro was a good thing and that it would yield more competitive state title games.   Based on a sample size of exactly one year, it would appear that was the case.  Seeding and reseeding may also have had an impact.

Candidly, I don't think I ever expressed a strong opinion one way or the other on the S&M issue (still talking high school football here, so get your mind out of the gutter).  I say this because I don't recall ever forming a strong opinion on the issue.  That said, I can certainly see myself pointing out the faults in such a system and, without question, I can see myself pointing out instances where one or more counties made an effort to game the system so that they would end up in one classification or the other based on perceived competition and likelihood of winning a state championship.

As I recall, one of the rationals expressed by the FHSAA for making the change was to 'grow the game of football in Florida.'   I think it will be several years before we know whether the new classification system has any affect on the number of kids playing the sport in Florida.  And even if numbers increase or decrease, I seriously doubt that anyone will be able to attribute the increase or decrease to this one change; there will simply be too many other variables.

So, in referee-like fashion, I'll conclude as follows:  "The ruling on the field is that Jambun was right about the Suburban and Metro Classifications working out and being successful.   Upon considerable review (at least two commercial's worth), there is no video evidence to affirm or overrule the ruling on the field.  Accordingly, the ruling on the field stands."    :D

Perspective, thank you for the nice, long-winded, legalese, response. However, next time a simple "Yes Jambun82, you were right as you usually are, and I am starting to wonder if you might be a Genius" will be more than sufficient.

Wow Jambun, I never imagined I would be impressed with you asking Mr. Atlantic that all important question.  Would you prefer mediocre teams to play for a State Championship?   This does nail why he supports his relegation/promotion system, so mediocre and POOR teams can win a state championship.  Great Call for a REF:D.

Ray, are you finally ready to admit that I have known what I have been talking about all this time? Of that you always learn from me, and at least 5-10% smarter after reading my posts? When I say these things, it is not just to hear my gums flap, it is because I always am making sense. That is probably why I am know as the sense-maker!

The plan did not work at all. You had the same teams as always in the finals and the only new champion was lake wales who made the semis recently. It will be the same group of teams in the finals just like the past decade.  No real difference. So all the games were not blow out. Same teams and you got a million blowouts during regular season so no state powers got crushed by plan.

Of course the same teams made the Title Games, those are the best teams. Would you prefer mediocre teams to play for a State Championship? The regular season will remain the same because the districts are, for the most part, the same as they have always been. People like you are never satisfied, and just like to complain for complaining's sake.

    Is that a serious question?

Obvious you missed the 4S title game yesterday and other Venice games.  Check the replay when you get a chance.

This will be my only comment on his antics, but someone or something has given him the impression that he can intimidate the boys in stripes. Yesterday was ridiculous and he got a few 15-yard penalties to go his way that were not personal fouls.

To make matters worse, late in the game Lakeland QB was clearly hit out of bounds on Venice sideline but for some odd reason the yellow flags did not fly at that point

Yes, I was not able to view the Lakeland vs Venice game because I had to work. I am hoping to watch the game within a week or so, if Spectrum Sports still has the videos on their website.

Agree 100%, but the noise coming out of Venice the last 2 weeks was their "scheme" would get the job done. Reality set it when he could no longer chase the refs down the sideline after every play screaming for a tough foul.

Lakeland/Osceola was clearly the defacto 4S State championship game.

The Kowboys return a strong 2024/2025 class and could be the early favorite going into the 2023 season.

Is Venice known for chasing officials down after every play arguing for fouls?

  15. 9 hours ago, ExplorerHomer2 said:

One didn't stand, but Columbus was flagged for a personal foul called on a 4th down play that would have given the Darters a 1st and goal. Head ref eventually waved off the flag. Also, in the final moments of regulation before the field goal attempt, the Darters came up short of the first, in bounds with 8 seconds left and no timeouts and the clock didn't move for about 10 seconds. Darters then began to line up for what would be an upcoming spiked ball, then the clock finally began to run. Got down to one second so they had a shot at the field goal which was eventually blocked.

Those were the two I was referring to. So more like an almost questionable penalty and one bad no call. Both made for a more dramatic finish than needed.

Yes, the first instance was good crew-work to discuss whether or not a foul was committed. The officials talked it out, and determined that the contact was in the field of play and no penalty was warranted. The second instance was correct due to an officials timeout because the runner's helmet had come off, and he had to leave the field of play. There was no questionable call on either circumstance.

Hats off to Apopka. What a grueling game.

Apopka fought hard as they have done all season and in the 4th tied it up. Several 3rd and long and a couple 4th down conversions. This game could have gone either way at several points. At one point it looked as if the explorers would lock it up only to throw a pick that revived the Darter's chances down inside the Explorer red zone.

A couple questionable penalties and a blocked FG attempt and we end regulated at 10 a piece,

First series in OT saw Apopka settle for a field goal. On the Explorer possession , Mendoza rolls left to pitch it to WR (and backup QB) AJ Arellano on a reverse and hits Mendoza on the run for the score. Final 13-16

Just when I thought the last CCHS v Apopka matchup was an incredible last minute finish, then we have this. These two programs have now built an exciting rivalry of mutual respect.

Great game with 6,700 in official attendance, despite the weather.

I want to congratulate the Darters on another incredible battle. Hope to see chapter 4 of this slugfest play out next year.

    What questionable penalties?

  17. The Suburban and Metro Classifications worked and were successful for the state playoffs this season. These were the most exciting State Title Games that I can remember in many years. All of the amateur, wannabe, FHSAA Administrators who wined and complained about this new system on this message board all season, now need to acknowledge that fact. I hope that this system of classification remains the same for many years to come.  Four of the five Ft. Lauderdale games were one-score differences, and most of the Tallahassee games were fairly close as well.  That is what High School Football should be about.
