Only have one true state champ in elite divisions and call rest consolation division.

That wouldn't be fair to smaller schools, especially those that don't "cater" to elite athletes. If those kids at non-recruiting" schools win a state championship game, they probably deserve the designation more than the "bought" teams.

Im talking about transfer in the sense you played varsity football for at least one year prior to your new school

What about kids whose families actually move into the school district in question and may just be "average" high school players? If they are counted as a part of the 5 transfers, some coaches that routinely recruit top players may not allow these average players to "make" the varsity. I agree your concept is good if it includes only those transfers whose immediate families continue to reside outside the boundaries of the new school.

Actually Toho as a brand new school a few years back made tremendous strides in the first couple of years with former OHS alum and former Georgia football player Marc Deas as the HC.  I think it was only their third season and they not only made it into the playoffs but actually won the first round.  Since his departure they have struggled.   By the way, with 80% of the season complete it looks like Zay is more than a complimentary piece.  He appears to lead in yards, receptions, TD's and does good work on special teams for your WP Wildcats.  Rumor is he may return at midterm to finish out his baseball career at OHS; have not been able to confirm.

Zay has been a welcome addition and a tremendous asset on the Winter Park Wildcats. He is their leading receiver, has great hands and very good speed and is a deep threat. He's also very good after the catch. All that, and he's a great kid. He's far from a "complementary piece, and upon arrival at WP, he quickly became one of Aidan Warner's favorite go-to targets.

I didn’t see any scores that were ran up

When you leave your starters in, especially the QB, and you're winning by scores like 49-0, 48-0, 47-6, 46-7, and 53-14, and your QB is still throwing late in the game, that's running up the score. Most coaches when faced with obvious mismatches and lopsided scores, will not keep their starters in after getting up by 4 or 5 TD's, unless they are trying to pad their stats.

Not meaning to pile on one of our local schools, Toho Tigers but I must say this has turned into a very disappointing year for them.  They entered with a lot of hype securing the Freshman QB with alot of promise to attend there, new coach from Lk. Nona and all the other chatter. After a 5-0 start and lots of chest thumping regarding passing records being set by this "Phenom" they got beat by an 0-7 Celebration team in their last outing.  The HC with all his varsity experience should have known better as the combined record of their first 5 opponents to date is 7-35.  Toho has lost their last three games in a row and will undoubtedly lose the last 2.  That school has lots of potential with where they are located and I hope they do step it up in every way next year.

Toho HS is only about 5 years old and up until this season, their football team has not been competitive against established teams. They hired a new coach and found a freshman QB that has potential. The early half of their schedule was against extremely weak teams and they ran up the scores, while bragging that their QB was the "next coming". They finally started playing teams that were capable of winning at the varsity level and Toho and their QB are failing miserably. One can only imagine what Osceola will put up on the scoreboard against Toho in their next game. Hard to feel sorry for Toho after they ran up scores in their first five games.

First off, friends and neighbors (Ft. Pierce Central, Centennial, Martin County and Vero) will have squat to say if they all lose to this 1-5 team which is highly probable.  Also, if this tough schedule prepares them and propels them thru the playoffs those seniors can hang their hat on that.  As a gauge, let's see how Dillard does vs STA as what Treasure Coast did this past Friday.  It was a 0-0 game at halftime and eventually lost 21-7 not necessarily a route.  Despite their record, they are extremely good.  I experienced this kind of thinking as we were leaving the game on Friday night vs Rockledge with some of their fans jeering, they are 4-1 while we are 2-2.  Didn't make much sense to me after just getting their ass kicked.

It was a 0-0 game at halftime and eventually lost 21-7 not necessarily a route.  Despite their record, they are extremely good.

I wasn't aware that the W-L-T columns made a distinction between "good losses", "routs", and just "losses". I've only seen them listed as losses.

Also, if this tough schedule prepares them and propels them thru the playoffs those seniors can hang their hat on that.

We're all entitled to our opinions. I would think that the kids would rather have a winning record against teams with which they are competitive rather than "hanging their hat on" continually getting beaten by teams that are better than them.

They have the toughest schedule in state outside of maybe Chaminade or AHP. They just aren’t at that level yet. But everyone else under them would all lose to the same teams. But I do get if you are gonna schedule all these great teams you gotta show up!

At what point do you determine that the AD and/or HC are not doing the kids a favor by scheduling competition that, as it appears right now, is above their capabilities? This is high school football; I wouldn't think that in five years these kids will take much pride looking back and knowing they lost most of their football games during their senior season, especially when their friends from neighboring schools remind them. They should have scheduled games with teams with whom they could be "competitive".

  8. Perhaps someone can explain to me why it is necessary to have "Jambun82" comment on the officiating of the SFA - Venice game. Those of us that watched the game could see obvious blown calls throughout the game that almost always went against SFA. I don't know if the officials had a "bias" or just a bad day and consistently missed calls throughout the game, and as luck would have it, those calls almost always went against SFA. Venice was a "State Champion" last year, but that is not the case this year. Venice is nothing more than, at best, an average high school team this year.

I'm not a coach or a referee; I'm just a high school football fan. We need the referees if we want to enjoy this great sport. There are a lot of good, honest referees in high school football, and even then they miss calls or make mistakes. I wouldn't want their job because as far as close calls go, one team and their fans will almost always complain. With that being said, I don't think the officials in the SFA - Venice game did their fellow officials any favors.

  9. 6 hours ago, Wavebb said:

skyway your comments are too kind.  I have never laughed so hard while watching a football game at any level.

So true. Venice obvious fumbles that weren't called; one before the Venice player crossed the goal line, but was ruled a touchdown. Every time Venice needed a bailout penalty call, the refs obliged by calling one against SFA. It was clearly a football mismatch. Venice didn't belong on the same field with SFA.

I was impressed with Winter Park over Boone the way they did but I want to see a little more first because with their schedule if they start struggling with the weaker teams I have to drop them quickly

Winter Park is loaded with experienced seniors at the skill positions on their starting offense and defense. Their offense can score quickly, as seen in their last game with Boone. With 1:10 left in 1st half, they drove about 80 yards without any difficulty in about 5 plays. The defense is aggressive and hits hard; WR's start looking over their shoulders waiting for the hit to come rather than focusing on catching the ball. The DL is aggressive. Where WP is vulnerable is on the DL against the run if the opponent has a big OL; the WP OL is also a little undersized and that can make establishing the running game tough against a big DL. Depth at QB is something most teams face. Developing the 2nd QB is a must. He's getting playing time in the 2nd half, but it takes game experience to develop confidence and a rhythm with receivers. He should get plenty of playing time in the next few games.

  11. 16 hours ago, Ray Icaza said:

With the QB Winter Park has it was a given they would be good offensively, but their defense has also played great.  I don't see any team on their schedule that may give them problems with the exception of Ocoee.  But they probably will be favored even against them.   No Jones, Edgewater, Lake Mary, Apopka, Seminole, etc... that they should have scheduled to get a more accurate gauge of how good they really are.

We knew the offense was going to be very good, with experienced seniors at all the skill positions. The defense has been better than anticipated. The DB's play tight coverage and love to deliver hard hits at every opportunity. Boone's WR's were looking over their shoulders waiting for the hit to come rather than concentrating on catching the pass. The DL was outweighed by a good amount by Boone's OL, but quickness off the line help nullify any passing offense by Boone. Then, having a QB that can deliver an accurate pass at 5 or 55 yards doesn't hurt. The QB also combines with a senior RB to give WP a good running game. As for the schedule, it is what it is. They have their District games (admittedly, not a real strong group) that are required; there are a couple of long running "rivalry" games like Boone. They had the North Gwinnett game to allow the kids to experience an out of state game. Plus, some of the best teams in the area were not available because they had schedules in place or maybe they didn't feel that WP would be worth scheduling this year; have to wait for the playoffs.

Impressive win for WP and our kid Zay is assuming a bigger role offensively in the passing game.

He had 2 or 3 TD's in WP 1st game, a 42-0 win over Lake Nona . He most likely would have had more but starters were pulled at end of 3rd quarter with score at 42-0.  Starters were pulled at the beginning of the 4th quarter against Boone last night; score was 38-3. WP can score very quickly; they have a deep receiving group. Zay will get plenty of opportunities.

Yes he is a major loss. I don't know how good the backup is, but he gave Apopka's defense fits particularly in the first half. He could be the difference between a relatively deep playoff run for WO and a quick exit if they make the playoffs.

Winter Park was supposed to play at WO in the KOC. Like many football fans throughout the Orlando area that night, we sat in our cars for 2 hours watching the lightning show before the game was cancelled.

Huge loss for them. He's the reason they beat Apopka. Very good mobility and decent arm.

He was showing a lot of improvement as a dual threat QB; it will be a major loss for West Orange.

Just from watching Osceola's last couple games, i could only speculate he wanted to go somewhere to get more looks as a reciever, since Osceola's offense seems to be a little more run heavy this year.

Given Winter Park has a stud QB it was not that much of a surprise.

I watched him put a clinic on the Boone defense last night with 3 TDs!

In my opinion he is easily a Top 5 receiver in Central florida probably the best Slot reciever in Central Florida in my eyes.

Great speed, Great hands and superb route running.

My grandson loves throwing Zay the ball; he knows if he puts it out there, Zay will go and get it. WP has several top notch WRs as well as a very good RB. Most of these kids have grown up together through Pop Warner and many have played 7v7 together in the off season. I agree with you that Zay is one of the top 5 WRs in Central Florida and that is saying a lot because we have some outstanding WRs in our area this year.

This isn't an accusation of wrongdoing, but to be honest the reason I mentioned Zay transferring to WP was you saying they can't get transfers due to being "AT CAPACITY".  In addition, we usually understand why the player chooses to come or go but that isn't clear with him.  He has been on our varsity since his freshman year and would be starting again so that isn't the reason.  He isn't going to a program with higher exposure for recruiting purpose and if there was a beef with the staff there are a dozen schools both in Osceola and Orange that are much closer.  You see, I don't think the family has moved.  Maybe your grandson can provide some insight.  No animosity on our end as we prefer to have players that WANT to be here.

There was an "at capacity" designation that allowed for a limited number of students that don't live in the WP zone to transfer in by entering a "lottery type system" for a limited number of admissions. That was the policy before the new free transfer policy that was instituted throughout Florida allowing just about anyone to go to the school of their choice as long as they could provide their own transportation. I don't know if the "at capacity" designation even exists anymore; it may have been changed due to challenges that seem to be the standard now-a-days..

I do know that my grandson and his teammates enjoy having Zay there as a friend and a welcome addition to his receiving group. Why would he want to leave Osceola, his local school, especially if he was a starting WR on a good team? He might have family in WP.

Hornet. Not to contradict you but I just looked up that Winter Park team and you idea that they are student athletes is bull crap.  I saw where they were busted for recruiting where they were putting kids up in apartments and a whole slew of violations of fhsaa.

Winter Park High School football players ineligible after faked documentation uncovered

Students transferred from Timber Creek between spring, fall 2018

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Four high school football players have been ruled ineligible after the Florida High School Athletic Association found that their residential documents were faked in order for the students to play for Winter Park High School this school year.

According to the Florida High School Athletic Association investigation, Winter Park High School received multiple transfer students starting in the spring and fall of this year. State athletic officials said they were concerned about the nature of these student-athlete transfers and attempted to verify their eligibility to play for the school.

Two 18-year-old football players told News 6 the now ineligible students transferred from Timber Creek High School as seniors, adding that this will probably ruin their future college football careers.

Winter Park High School has received 10 other transfers this year, but those players were cleared, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

I didn't follow Winter Park football closely in 2018: at that time, I was following my oldest grandson at Bishop Moore. I started following WP when my youngest grandson and his friends started WPHS in 2019 as freshmen. I had heard of the Timber Creek kids transfers being challenged, but i question why the coaching staff was not dismissed or at the very least disciplined if "they were busted for recruiting, where they were putting kids up in apartments and a whole slew of violations of FHSAA". Were the accusations ever verified and if so, did the FHSAA levy some form of penalty on the school's program?  I'm not aware of any disciplinary action taken against the school or football program. WPHS, as a school considered "at capacity", has restrictions against accepting transfers by students unless they live in the WP school district. I oppose recruiting because it can destroy the program at the school that they players leave.

No science. The whole rivalry thing doesn’t fly because if a bad team plays harder against their rival than why doesn’t the good team play hard against their rival?

Plus Edgewater beat them 49-6 last year. How come the “rivalry” didn’t make it closer?

Some times when teams press, bad things like fumbles and interceptions happen and games can quickly get out of control. Edgewater has the best RB in the nation, Cedric Baxter. The kid is a beast of an RB, committed to Texas, and is almost unstoppable. Neither Bishop Moore or any other team Edgewater faces this year is going to have an easy time with him. Remember the name!

SHOULD is different than HAVE TO.

You don’t have to throw someone in the top 20 for one good game just like you shouldn’t automatically throw someone out for having a bad one. Case in point with Edgewater. The poor game against B Moore shouldn’t have booted them out.

No poll is always absolute and there will ALWAYS be something to nitpick at. Apopka should beat those teams like that. They didn’t this one time vs Ocoee and that shouldn’t bar them. Losing a close one to a team (West O) who could prove to be a really good team at seasons end isn’t a terrible loss either.

Edgewater and Bishop Moore is an annual "rivalry game", with both schools being within walking distance of each other. Edgewater didn't play a bad game; that game is normally a hard fought game. That being said, Edgewater is the more talented team this year and as to be expected, they won the game. Doesn't your scientific method take into account rivalry games?

  20. 1 hour ago, Ray Icaza said:

By the way, this isn't meant to be a slight against APK as the season is still early and they have time to gel enough to be considered at top 25 or top 50 team.  These comparisons of teams that are in the top 10% or top 50 teams as opposed to the one's in the top 1% (top 5-6) to justify if they are excellent teams is asinine.  Everyone knows the top 1% will pretty much dismantle the other 99%.

To the best of my memory, Apopka has been a team that starts out a little slow and builds momentum as the season progresses. I don't think they'll take offense to your using them to establish a point. I think Apopka will be heard from before the season is over.

Can you send the link that shows tangible evidence that the elite teams are out recruiting? Thank you in advance

Anyone who closely follows HS football in Florida knows that recruiting is rampant, but no one wants to point a finger at the recruiters. Just taking one position, how many of the so-called "elite" schools in Central Florida have a junior or senior starting QB that actually attended that same school since the 9th grade?
