You are 100% correct, you were in the room and I was not but what you are now describing is a whole separate issue than your original statement that not a single player made all county.   We both know 3 of your players in fact did.

What I was saying was taken out of context, mostly I didnt choose my words exactly correct. I was implying that as a team we were passed over, not every single player. But only 1 of our players, was awarded 1st team out of 30

First team is what matters, it is a medal and major recognition. Second team is a certificate, honorable mention is well, 3rd team I guess. In shear numbers overall Poinciana was given a lot of second teams. But those kids didnt get maybe 1 or 2 first team votes. There are things I would like to say, but i wont.

Again, please understand I am not trying to take away from other players accomplishments. Just commenting on how some teams and their players accomplishments are viewed.

Again Coach, congrats on a successful season and as always I respect your opinion on HS football matters.  However, your best player Perry Garrett actually made first team all county, not as a WR or RB or DB but as an athlete who could do it all just like you utilized him.  He was one of your 3 players that did shine in that senior game.  Your RB Davrell made 2nd team all county, as like Perry was a back-up on our team so who should they have kept off the 1st team?  Taevion, the 2 very good RB's from Harmony?  You and I both know that would not be just.  Lastly, you probably have a good argument for your QB statistically plus leadership and other factors but he also made the 2nd team.  I don't get a vote or have a dog in the hunt but still not sure why they gave the 1st team honor to the SC QB.  If it was based on the stats your kid had a few hundred yards more thru the air and was better as a runner.  But if that was the overriding factor they should have given it to Sabby from Toho as he had over 1000 more yards than either and he only got an honorable mention.  Remember, all year I hammered Toho not for their strength of schedule but for running up scores on those inferior teams.   At years end their strength of schedule was a -2 while yours was a -19, so that may have also been a factor.   So factually all three of your players you say were passed over actually made either 1st team or 2nd team.

Honestly, it is a vote amongst the head coaches in the county only!   In my opinion it can be a popularity contest at times. I was there, I voted, I saw who voted for who. I saw who didnt give almost a single vote for a particular school, no matter who the athlete or accomplishments were.  I wont go into particulars, but it is way more than stats. (Honest stats) Not bashing anyone, not calling anyone out. Not saying anything bad about anyone. I voted honestly using statistics as a basis, did figure in strength of schedule and players true ability. Just because a team doesnt have a good record, doesnt mean that the player is not of a certain caliber. Have to take a lot of factors into account.

I am not saying that the players who received the awards were not deserving, or even better than our players. It was the lack of respect in the actual voting, which you would never see.

8-2 is nothing to sneeze at.  Congratulations!!

Appreciate that!  At the county level we still did not get any real recognition. Our players were passed over for the all county team. We did have a silver lining though. We played a senior game osceola vs lake county. we lost the game by special teams. But our QB threw 3 TD passes and our receivers caught 3 td passes, not all the same. We were involved in every score. I know we impressed the other county coaches then!

Now we just have to back that up next season, To prove we werent a one hit wonder. We added Toho and Celebration and Foundation academy to our schedule, dropping Parrish community, LaBelle and Ambassadors Christian. No disrespect to them, scheduling just didnt work out!

  4. What I meant by easy, was had you scored at that point it would have been very difficult for them to have a comeback and score 3 times with the momentum on Osceola's side.

Your momentum was on the ground side. Your running back was gashing them almost every run. Yes there were successful throws. and was balanced by yards gained. But big plays versus grinding it out, ball control, playing keep away from the other team.

What i was questioning in the play calling is taking into account the quarterbacks decision making. Not the actual play call. But when the QB is likely to do what he did. I dont know if i would have made that play call with so much on the line. Again, just my arm-chair opinion, I was not in the seat, having to make that decision in real time. Just my opinion.

QB had a bad game.  2nd and 1 play was the momentum changer for sure.  He had a guy open in the flats but decided to throw across his body to no one, well no one in white.  State semi's on the road and you turn it over 3-4 times you usually won't win especially playing against Bill Castle, who by the way passed Corky Rogers as the all time winningest coach in Florida last week.

Congrats to Coach EP on a great year but this was expected out of Osceola.  Coach Beek you should have been the county coach of the year.   I hope to see Poinciana back in a district soon and on the rise.

I appreciate the vote of confidence on county coach of the year, but overcoming the stigma of poinciana is hard to do!   Should be, county coaching staff of the year. Couldnt do what i do without a great staff! We do hope to have a similar season next year. If we are able to continue in this direction. It is my plan to enter district play on the next 2 year cycle.

  6. Please understand this is just my outside opinion. I was at the game. Saw everything. Osceola should have won that game easy if in my opinion there weren't a few play calling mistakes. The first one was a big momentum shift. Osceola had 2nd and 1 very close to the endzone, (dont recall the exact yard, but inside the 15 for sure) They passed the ball!  The run is what got them there and they were moving the ball well on the ground. The pass was way off target and was picked off and started Lakeland's comeback. Had Osceola scored, which it looked very likely they would have been up 14-0 (assuming extra point).

Lakeland would have been in panic mode to try and make up 2 scores in a very short time. The second one was the "trick play". 4th and 4 in the red zone with the game on the line! Do what got you there! rely on your runners! Wouldnt have been 4th and 4 had they not attempted a pass earlier in the series.

Understand, it is easy to be a armchair coach. (I am somewhat qualified though) I am not criticizing the coaches or play calls. Just giving my opinion. Same thing goes for "prevent defense"  all that does is prevent you from winning. Stick to what got you there and your teams strengths.

Also Congratulations to EP for Osceola county coach of the year. Well done!

In full agreement with this assessment and how it will undoubtedly affect the success or stumbles of some teams going forward.   Hope it is behind us now and won't be an issue for the remainder of the playoffs.  Will have a much better idea after watching us perform tonight.

    Ill be there tonight!

Did you ever get my email of all the results? I bet this year had they best offense ever too. Averaged over 35 points per game

Yes, Got the email. We are checking on everything. I believe we have set every single school record this year. Points scored, wins, most points scored in a game, largest margin of victory over rival and finally beating the rival school after 15 years of loosing. Still checking on best defense. Now it is on to get these kids in school, then prepare for next year. hopefully we can have 1/2 as much success as this season.

  9. Poinciana  vs St. Cloud Canceled   We could not get the game rescheduled for saturday due to one of the schools not being available.

Poinciana searched everywhere we could for a make up game and was unable to find an opponent.

Thanks, had no idea but sounds like another winnable game for them.

Lake region coach just told me. All of a sudden today Toho is having to check with their AD after asking for $$ for playing this game and Region came up with the money. So who knows if that game will play now

Awesome display of both offense and defense.  My other observation on an Osceola county school is Toho's performance last night against Haines City.  Most did not expect them to win and I congratulate them on the victory despite my jabs at the coach for running up scores/stats at times.   It was also a pretty convincing win.  If Harmony doesn't get in as probably the second best team in the county, maybe they can play a bowl game against Toho.

Toho is playing lake region on Thursday

  12. I may regret posting this in the morning. But from all our kids have been through for the last 4 years as me being the head coach and the schools history. Poinciana finally defeated liberty 56-0.After loosing the "Battle of the Boulevard" for 15 years in a row, from its existence! Improving our record to 8-2. Lets not forget who we are and from where we came. My hat is off to the kids and their sacrifices that have finally made this happen for them!

I'm sure Cocoa Beach would take a bowl game since they lost to Paxon last Friday

Cocoa beach!. My hats off to the Head coach of that program. He has had a complete turnaround this year there. A perennial 1-9, 0-10 program. We have talked during the year. He has similar issues that I have. He is headed in the right direction.

    Terrible news.

I would love to see a couple Orlando area teams play in a bowl game Miner Bowl with the proceeds going to his family

I know East river is trying to make that happen. They reached out to us. We have already made a commitment for a bowl game and couldnt help. But i am sure someone will.

  15. Thanks to all. I never thought at week 10 with 1 game to go Poinciana would be sitting 7-2. I am only a small part of how all of this happened. Coaches and players all working together and believing in the system. Unfortunately we are just now finally hitting on all cylinders. With the season winding down.  The game we played last night was the most complete game we have played as a team. All facets of the game worked well. Hardee is no slouch, they are a well disciplined and expertly put together team. All of the things that have gone wrong for us in the past went right for a change. This was the best officiated game I have been in all year. Big shout out to Gulf coast football officials association. (and no, all the penalties didn't go against the other team)

The bowl game is set for Wednesday 11/9/2022 at Poinciana High school vs St. Cloud High School

This game will be a very tough one for us. But we really need to play them to see where we are as a team.

First we must beat Liberty Friday night. 15 years loosing this rivalry hopefully will come to an end.

I must also thank my administration for believing in the process. When they hired me I told them this was going to be a long process. This year being my 4th, I am now the longest tenured coach in the schools history. I feel we are still in the beginning process of this. One good year doesn't fix anything. But it is a heck of a start. We hit rock bottom last year having kicked all our seniors off the team. The kids who came in this year came with a great attitude. They are coach-able. They are good students and most of all great leaders.

I am telling you, not suggesting, telling you that the proper way to handle any issues or problems that you have with officiating for your home football games is to contact your Officials Association's supervisor and assigner with the video of the plays that you want explanations on. Posting on a public message board, where nobody has any idea who is reading and interpreting, what you have to say, especially when you have publicly identified which school that you coach at. Officials have the right to block schools and teams, and the very best officials just may use this option if they know that a coach will publicly call them out in this way. Beek, I suggest that you request to have a nice, long, conversation with the supervisor and assigner of your Officials Association when your season ends. You can iron out some of these issues and problems at that point hopefully.

We have been trying to work this out for the last 5 or more years. We will continue to try. But all requests seem to fall on deaf ears.

Actually we are trying currently to play Hardee on October 31'st. We are waiting on their AD to let the head coach know if that can happen. Hardee needs games to become playoff eligible, And we need a game to complete our season. So we will see if that can happen. I have spent most of the last 2 days trying to find a replacement for North Port.

We played Hardee tonight.  Poinciana 49 Hardee 14 Very appreciative of the game. Spoke to the head coach afterwards. We are considering a return trip next year as well.

Yes or no: should a high school team's history/pedigree have any affect on its current rating?

Thats a double edge sword. If I was in charge of preseason rankings. I would consider last years performance, The past 5 years trend. Strength of the new seasons schedule based on where other teams finished the prior year. This would still just be a guess. But how can a team that has never competed in a high school football game be raked above a team who has competed. Even if that team is 0-10. They have a history at least.

    So yes and no.

Teams who have poor records and performance at the beginning of the year are rated very low.

I wish ALL coaches, band directors, club sponsors, and principals understood this. Every kid needs an opportunity to feel part of something bigger than themselves. Too many athletic kids walking hallways, but not in a sport or anything athletic. Heck, even unathletic kids can be part of your program, some coaches give up way too early on kids if they aren't showing out by end of freshman season. Maybe that kid learns to run the camera equipment, maybe they make hype videos, maybe they just never were encouraged to play because they were always over the weight limit and were mocked.
Coaches NEED to be on campus and not expect that a simple announcement over a loud speaker is going to get a kid playing.

Working the halls is what we do every day. From players to coaches even admin helps. Our situation may be different than others. I am not in their halls so I cant attest to what goes on. We commonly hear, football sucks so we arent going to play! I only play basketball or another sport! I work lunch duty as a volunteer to make myself present and available to all the student body. My players are most likely the best help recruiting the halls. This year we are experiencing a change. We still have kids changing their mind and wanting to jump on the band wagon. But, we finally have a band wagon worth jumping on. We never quit coaching a player. Doesnt matter how skilled they are, or their lack of skill. We are teaching football 101 every day as most of our kids never played before high school.  We have converted some of the kids who wanted to quit for various reasons to managers, permanent ball boys or what ever else that could keep them in and interested.

Beek, what you are posting on this message board is counterproductive.to what you are trying to attain regarding officiating for your home football games.

I deleted the prior posts as to be non-offensive to officials.

All I am trying to do is put it out there that because we are who we are we get sub-par officiating more often than not. Do I expect an official to see this and say, wow we could do better. Absolutely not! What is frustrating as a coach is the lack of respect for a program shown by the officials association. But if I say nothing then I am part of the problem. I have contacted the officials association. I have filled out reviews of officiating. Still nothing happens. I was told directly by the officials that my game doesn't matter therefore 4 officials is all we get because they are short and other games are more important.

I guess i could just shut up, sit back and be compliant.

    4. Never going to happen. The argument that the state legislature made is that if a kid is allowed to transfer to be in the best band, welding, nursing, or academic program, why should we limit their ability to transfer for athletic

only band and athletics are competitive. Shouldn't the waiver be based on academics (which is the preface of the law) instead of competition?
