  1. My heart felt condolences go out to all the victims, their families and friends. This is very, very sad and traumatizing. Unfortunately, this type of event has become commonplace to the point where it is not that surprising anymore. A rational, sane approach to all of this would be societal self examination leading to concrete steps to significantly reduce the incidence of this type of event in the future. I am no anti second amendment individual. But I am forced to ask the question: what kind of civilian needs or should have a weapon that can fire off hundreds of rounds per minute? Seems to me that such a weapon should be restricted to the military. But what do I know. As things stand, we must learn to live with this type of situation happening on a fairly regular basis, as I doubt anything will be done to reduce its likelihood.
  2. Those could be it. Both coached for a long time and mostly at teams that had limited success: Miami Palmetto, Miami Beach, Belan Jesuit.
  3. Don Drinkhahn of South Dade would be the first one. Never won a title; but was there forever. Team finally won in 2013 shortly after he retired. I don't know the other coach.
  4. I understand why they are mad. College football is somewhat corrupt. And punishments are not always handed down evenly. When a lot of money and prestige is involved, things have a way of being like that.
  5. Don't get on his case, Zoe. It is what is taught in school. I feel Columbia's argument in his post is reasonable, given the circumstances.
  6. Gierke has never won a state title. His mentor and coach, Larry Gergley, I believe, did at Bishop Moore before moving on to Winter Park where he coached Gierke. I stand corrected. It is Gierke. He tied Southridge for the 1991 5A title at Evans High.
  7. 1. Bill Castle, correct 2. Byron Walker, I assume that's correct. 3. Larry Gergley
  8. There are programs as old as Vero's that have never made a final four. At least VB is a perennial playoff team.
  9. That's crazy. I am sorry Coach Jackson took this game.
  10. Happy birthday. We were born years apart but just days apart.
  11. More competition in the playoffs at Merritt Island. But more readily available talent there, too. I guess it would be a wash in the grander scheme. If he went to MI, he would need some of the Cocoa talent to follow him there.
  12. Great analysis, Laz. I don't disagree with your conclusion on its face. However, could it be possible that if non power 5 teams had a real shot at making the FBS playoffs, they would become more attractive to top flight recruits? And, if this is so, wouldn't it help reduce the disparity to some degree between the Power 5 and non Power 5?
  13. This is a pity. It would have been an interesting game.
  14. I have never been a fantasy guy, otherwise I would.
  15. I think the players have a case. I don't blame them for pursuing it. College football is high stakes. Players, legally, get little but their scholarship. Some schools and coaches have a lot of financial rewards from how it's set up. So the incentive for the athletes is to play is the "dream" of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (NFL draft).
  16. Okay. So it's still in the works but not finalized, yet? If Lakewood is pretty average, then I agree, this would be a good game for Oak Ridge. From what I saw of Oak Ridge at the Apopka game last year, they have real good athletes. Not sure how many graduated, but if they bring back the core of that team, then Coach Clint Johnson will have a decent team this year. It would not hurt if a couple of the basketball and soccer guys decided to play football this upcoming season, too. Oak Ridge has strong teams in both those sports.
  17. I will see if I can get a confirmation of this. Unless Lakewood is a pretty bad California team, Oak Ridge will probably be in trouble. They have athletes, but are young and the current HBC is just starting his second year. Prior coach took a lot of their talent to Jones.
  18. Once upon a time, that would have been huge for an NFL line!
  19. I think 2 is right. Not sure about 1. Did either Chamberlin or Astronaut ever win a ship? Off the top of my head, and I stand corrected, I can't recall either winning a title. That is a tough quiz. You have done at least one better than I did. I was laying a goose egg!
  20. Some of the better 4A schools, Bolles and Jones come to mind, bailed for 5A, as they wanted to be in districts. That, and the fact that 4A has lacked depth for the past several years. Not sure why this has been so. Could it, perhaps, be just one of those random cycles that affect the different classifications from time to time?
