  1. Thanks. Then I guess Dillard it is! Hallandale was a good, athletic team last year when I saw them against Bishop Moore. I realize a lot has changed with a new head coach and a lot of kids graduating. But I figure it will probably be a competitive game between two teams that have a decent shot at making the post season.

Maybe not an elite game, but a watchable one, nevertheless. That would be a welcome relief as I expect Apopka to put a beat down on Edgewater Friday night. It's funny how time affects rivalries. Apopka/Edgewater used to be the game of the week up here. Not so much recently. Perhaps Chris Leak, Edgewater's new HBC, can turn around the Edgewater program. I certainly hope so, as this used to be a fun rivalry.

  2. Well DarterBlue2, not the best card for SFL games but here are my thoughts on some of the better SFL games for Week 2:

I know you are not here Thursday but  two games stand out:

9/1  7pm Northwestern @ Columbus (@ Tropical park)-  The Good: Two quality Dade teams should amount to a great game.  The Bad: Tropical Park is a little SW of Ives Dairy road.

9/1  7pm Carol City (3A) @ Oxbridge Academy (3A)- The Good: Gourmet food stand. Great venue. Carol City hungry for a W and OA at Home = should be able to compete with Carol City unless a let down from Week 1.  The Bad: Game in West Palm Beach

    Friday:

9/2 7pm STA (7A) @ Miramar (8A) - The Good: Right up the street from Ives Dairy Road. Miramar quietly looked very strong versus Mater Academy in Wk 1. Great rivalry game.  The bad: Factor in rivalry game + STA angry = Could get ugly.

9/2 7pm North Miami Beach (8A) @ Chaminade-Madonna - The Good: Not to far from Ives Dairy - located just north of Hollywood Blvd in between Turnpike and I95. See a power 3A team versus perhaps an above average 8A team.  The bad: STA @ Miramar is closer to you.

9/2 7pm Hallandale (5A) @ Dillard (6A) - The Good: Great rivalry game. Two teams that feel they are underrated.  The Bad: If the game is really busy - the parking. STA @ Miramar is closer to you.

9/2 7pm Western (8A) @ McArthur (7A) - The Good: Sleeper game.  Two underrated teams in the county.  Pretty close to Ives Dairy road (Pines/Hollywood Blvd  + Turnpike).  The bad: STA @ Miramar is just down the street being played.

9/2 7pm Palm Beach Gardens(8A) @ Boca Raton(8A) - The Good: Solid PB County 8A match.  Boca HS not as far as it sounds.  Only 5 minutes north of Deerfield Beach and directly East off I95. The bad: Game in Boca.  STA @ Miramar closer to you.

9/2 7pm Vero Beach (8A)  @ PB Central (8A) The Good: Two likely 8A playoff teams from different Regions.  The bad:  Game in Palm Beach.

Thanks. Not a bad lineup. I do have a question. You list the Hallandale/Dillard game as Friday night. Mighty Dillard says Saturday. Which is it?

I probably don't hit the road for South Florida till Saturday morning since I was supposed to take in the Apopka/Edgewater game Friday with a former coworker and his wife. If STA/Miramar were Saturday, that would be the choice since Miramar is just north of the NFL stadium and less than 4 miles from sis. However, if that is Friday and the Dillard game is Saturday, then the Dillard game makes more sense for me.

  3. No other game worth mentioning is going on next saturday night. So if your down here come out bro it will b good to meet ya.

I will definitely be in north Dade by Saturday afternoon. My sister lives near Ives Dairy and I will be staying at her place. Since we don't fly till Sunday evening, I figured I may as well take in a South Florida game Saturday. I will send you a pm with my contact information tomorrow or Monday.

  4. Sooo Hallandale Shocked the County of Broward Last Night & beat the "8A TITLE CONTENDING DEERFIELD BUCKS" IN OT 22 21 at Hom Last night in the Season opener.

Dillard Vs hallandale tho brings Bad blood history Neaither School likes eachother the bands hate each other & dillard and hallandale has played eachother 6 str8 years with dillard winning the first 4 & hallandale winning the last 2.

This is a Saturday night game at the panthers Den ...so what are u guys thoughts.??

I believe I may be at this game unless a Broward or Dade guy can give me a better one to attend. Sis and I are flying out of Miami International Sunday evening. So, I should be in North Dade County Saturday. Then again, if one of the 8a contenders from South Florida plays a competitive game Saturday, I may go to that instead.

    Ideas?

  5. They don't believe they have a shot. I don't think the staff is stupid. I believe ER sees this as a strategic move to get used to better competition. They are currently in a relatively weak, but large district and don't have many optional games (this may change if we go to a new format). The new staff probably wants to make them not only a playoff team, but one that can go several games deep.

They could probably do this if they could attract some of the kids that go to surrounding teams, as they used to have a fair amount of talent until the new school was built (they had two epic playoff battles with Edgewater in the early to mid 2000s when Edgewater was strong). Playing higher level competition is one way to prepare for becoming relevant again. They probably view this as a great opportunity.

Didnt they say somewhere on Twitter ER was sayn how they ready 4 anybo

East Ridge scored first. But then the wheels fell off. Final Central 59-14. East Ridge did keep it sort of competitive for a half. Halftime was Central 27 ER 14, or something like that.

  6. as a manatee alum, this is a disgrace. no reason to ever score 50+ and loose. how do you give up 70+?!!!? I don't even know what to say. who said after last week they liked like they were in mid season form? the defense is terribly coached and someone needs to be fired.

i got one question to ask in the words of a befuddled coach at half time in the 6a 2001 state game: "Where the D at?" That question applies to both teams. Only Apopka/Cypress Bay or University School/Trinity Catholic come close.

  7. The Ocoee Knights were outplayed in every facet of the game against Apopka. At the half the score was 50-7, as Apopka moved the ball on the ground and in the air with relative ease. This game marked the debut of Jackson Darlington, third son of the head coach, who lined up at receiver as a true freshman. The kid runs good routes and has safe hands; he just needs to work on his speed a little and he should be a fine footballer. Despite limited playing time, he had over 50 yards receiving at the half including a touchdown catch.

Ocoee did have the best play of the game, a 65 yard pass play that set up their only score. Otherwise, they were unable to move the ball with any degree of effect even against the Apopka backups in the second half as two more touchdowns were added for good measure.

The final score was: Apopka 62 Ocoee 7. To be honest, I thought that Apopka was going to put up similar offensive numbers against the Tigers last week. Columbia to its credit had other ideas.

To me, the scary thing is that this team is far from reaching its full potential. Should it do so, another state title is a realistic goal, as I feel the talent is there.

  8. I wasnt talking about the game i just wanted more info about lake gibson being that we play them very soon..so in actuality it keeps the sport talking coming & u can talk about the match ups no problems there.

In the spring game they looked like a team that will improve as the season goes on. They have a new head coach, some good athletes and more than held their own against Osceola. I think the game with Dillard could be interesting since I assume you travel to them.

  9. In 2013 Apopka humiliated Edgewater winning 70-0. This was a rivalry that in the early 2000's used to be the game of the week in Greater Orlando. Well, in 2014, Edgewater with pretty much the same team (just kids a year older) beat us 46-42 on the final drive of the game.

Bottom line is this: while Coach Darlington does not seek to run up the score and will substitute liberally, he is not going to call the dogs off if the other team cannot defend itself against the boys in blue. Edgewater, obviously benefited from the experience as the following year they turned the tables just as a certain school from Lake City did this year against us.

Football is about teaching life's lessons. In life there are highs and lows successes and failures. The key is to learn from the lows and do whatever can be done to not repeat them. If you just can't compete with a team no matter what, then don't schedule them, period!

  10. Yeah I was right there when they got the penalty and we didn't care about the flag as we ran onto the field anyway lol but we usually have more time and I'm not sure why we were behind schedule on the field preparations that led to it but thank goodness we found a way to win, I'm sure you know which one I was ;)

Also side note we had 3-4 varisty starters out in that game, our starting running back and best DL and one our starting receivers

Also that was by far one of the most fun games I've ever seen and felt good to get the win, also I wish you all luck in your season and hope you all win the 8a

I was not going to mention it, as I don't like to make excuses, but since you mention yours, we, too, had three starters out: Massey, who was ejected from the spring game and had to sit out a one game suspension for it; Williams, who was punished for violating team rules the opening week of practice; and another kid whose name slips me at the moment. That said, no excuses, Columbia took their chances and deserved the win Saturday night.

  11. Have you gone to sleep yet Columbiahighfan2016 or are you still at the parade?

He had a long drive home so there was probably no parade. Although the game was a kickoff classic, both teams took it very seriously and treated it as an early regular season game. Columbia took advantage of its chances and, although I missed the second half to go watch my yardies run the men's and women's 4x100, from all accounts deserved the win. I do have a question for Columbia High Fan, though. What were you off the field for the opening kickoff and absorbing an unnecessary 15 yard penalty? I have never seen that happen before. That could have cost you a score as it gave Apopka the ball at mid-field. Fortunately for your team you held them won that drive. But unnecessary penalties should not be given to a good team.

Anyway, Columbia looks legit and I think will represent the North in the 7a game. Unfortunately, the opponent in final will most likely be St. Thomas. But good luck the rest of the season.

Despite the loss, and for what it's worth, I stand by my belief that Apopka will be in the 8a State game. A few kinks need to be ironed out, but the team should improve and do very well.

  12. SOOOOO in less then 24 hours THE #1 TEAM IN THE NATION will be in the panthers den for a showdown in the kick off classics school ready community ready you would think this is the state game lol.

but ayyeeeee im reaaaddddyyyy.!! i've been visoning a win vs sta in a dramatic 24 21 fashion and just hearing the crowd go crazy will that actually happen lol most likely not but in the end they bleed like we do so they can be beat. #PANTHER_NATION_LETSSSSS_GOOOOOO

Good luck tomorrow. Hope Dillard takes advantage of any miscues STA happens to make. I have seen bigger upsets and there is no reason Dillard can't make this happen.

  13. What team you rep?

I think Bad Bird would be an Apopka moniker. A Blue Darter is a Coopers' hawk.

Here is my take: if Columbia puts anyway near the number of points being predicted on the board against Apopka, then you make it to the 7a final this year. Apopka's defense is not sloppy and the offense, with or without any one of the running backs will still be strong.

I predict Apopka will win 45-14.

  14. Definitionally, STA does not have an all star team. What STA does have year in and year out, are teams that have few if any discernible weaknesses, and a bench that could start at many deep playoff contenders. Compare this with the Miami Central's, Carol City's, BTW's, Flanagan's, etc. These schools field exceptional teams sometimes for long stretches of time. However, eventually they revert to within 3 standard deviations of, if not the mean. Thus, Miami Northwestern had possibly the best teams in the nation in 2006 and 2007. However, since then not so much. Central is currently in the middle of a glorious run. However, this too will end.

The above is why I would never like my team to be in the same class as STA. For I would feel that I would only have a chance of winning a state title maybe once every 20 years  or so, based on the talent level I would expect to pass through the school. The only way it would ever be more frequent is if the school regularly embarked on poaching players from rival teams, thus creating a Central Florida All Star team. Yes, a Central may dominate for a five year stretch or more. But I know at some point in time, even if they remain very, very good, they will field a beatable team. And, I don't believe the wait will be 20 years. With STA on the other hand, they will always be championship caliber plus and can only be beat when the stars align perfectly for the average Central Florida power.  And, that I regard as being unfair to my chances of winning.

  15. I would participate. I would like to see a good selection of 10 games which do the following:

    • Half of the selection featuring marque games regardless of region
    • The remaining featuring a cross section of maybe less games, but ones where the participants seem well matched
    • The final element would be to keep everyone interested by having most, if not all, regions of the state represented each week
  16. soo i was rite ER want mc and really believe they have a shot.

They don't believe they have a shot. I don't think the staff is stupid. I believe ER sees this as a strategic move to get used to better competition. They are currently in a relatively weak, but large district and don't have many optional games (this may change if we go to a new format). 17. @Darterblue2 Since your from the Orlando area how are Jones, Evans and Oaks Ridge high school stadium facilities being all three are black schools.

Good question. The answer is, it varies. I will address each.

    1. Jones - For years they used the Citrus Bowl as their home stadium since the school has no on-campus facility. This could be viewed as good or bad depending on your perspective. Over the last three or four years, they were shifted to a Citrus Bowl practice field which was usually used for youth football and which is just south of the Citrus Bowl, and northwest of Jones. I considered this facility sub-standard. This year they currently don't have a home field for the first half of the season as the facility is being upgraded. We will see what the final product looks like when it is complete.

    2. Evans - They have a nice stadium which was renovated when the school was rebuilt a few years back. Seating at around 6,500 to 7,000, is adequate, the amenities are good, and the condition of the field is good. So, I would say aside from not having synthetic turf, Evans is doing quite well facility wise. When Apopka has a bye week or faces a soft team, I will sometimes go take in a game at Evans since it is equidistant with Apopka from where I live which is close to Wekiva.

    3. Oak Ride - The school was refurbished at the same time as Evans. However, they started with substandard facilities, and while significant repairs were done, the stadium was not upgraded. Lee Leonard Stadium is small, is very close to the field, as the track is separate from the stadium. There is not enough space behind the south end, end zone, so there is a risk of injury in my opinion on tight plays. Also, the land on which the field lies is not as level as I would like (similar to Olympia's).

So there you have it. It is a mixed bag. The irony is, that among the best stadium facilities in Orlando are Cypress Creek and University High (not Orange City University). Cypress Creek has never produced a competitive team and University does not do so often. So go figure.

  18. Slick, got you. While Orlando is a decent sized city, there is still space available. The school board actually funds the stadium construction as part of the school design (in most cases). So all schools get a stadium. However, if you want to get fancy (synthetic turf, etc.), then that would come from booster club or other locally raised money. So, the schools in richer areas here tend to have better facilities overall.

But there is something special about playing your home games on or across the street from the actual school! It boosts turnout, and serves as an intimidation factor (at some schools). Plus, the week of rivalry games, every so often, the visiting school pays a pregame visit to the home team facility ... all in good fun of course.

  19. What area are safe in America? Ain't know school safe... You can get touch at anytime or anywhere ... Plus I told you before NO DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAS THEIR OWN FOOTBALL FIELD!!! Since your afraid of Miami, if Columbia makes it to state which I doubt it , you probably won't want to go cause the citrus bowl is dead smack in the hood

So, Miami public schools don't get their own fields due to funding or is there another reason? In the Orlando/Greater Central Florida area, all Orange, Seminole, Osceola, and I believe, Lake County schools have their own stadium. I believe the same applies to Brevard county too, but not Volusia, where Mainland and Seabreeze share a stadium with Bethune Cookman, and I believe NSB, Atlantic and Spruce Creek also share a stadium. Deland has its own and I am not sure about the Deltona schools including Orange City.

In Orange and Seminole, overall, most of the stadiums are good to very nice. However, for the newer schools there are seating issues as from Timber Creek/Olympia on, they have not constructed the large stands that the older schools have.

Scheduling games in a large county like Dade must be a bear due to the lack of stadiums to play them in.
