  1. 1/3rd blowouts

    1/3rd competitive

    1/3rd avg to bad.

isnt that the essence what how it always is?  the bell curve is 15% top end, 15% bottom end and then 70% in the middle,  those #s are 50% in the middle, competitive to marginal and 50 blowouts and not good, what more do you want when you have your hands tied schedule wise?

After reviewing the results across the state for the first four weeks of the season, I have been surprised by the number of lopsided games.  For example, there were 237 final scores reported on this site for this week’s games.  The margin of difference in those games breaks down as follows:

    “Competitive game”               1 – 14 points        75 games (32%)

    “Marginally competitive”      15 – 23 points       43 games (18%)

    “Not really competitive”       24 – 34 points       48 games (20%)

    “Blowout/Running clock”       35+ points            71 games (30%)

Essentially, half of the games in the state were decided by 24 points or more, and therefore “non-competitive” by my definition.  In addition, there were 63 shutouts (27% of games).  While it’s great that there are a number of very strong teams in the state, anyone who is concerned about the long-term health of high school football in Florida should be worried by this trend toward non-competitive results.  Why are there so many struggling teams in Florida?  Is this just a further sign of the “haves” vs. “have-nots”, i.e., the transfer environment?  Are athletes at some schools just not playing football anymore?  Could a disparity in coaching or resources account for this trend?  How long before some schools just give up football if they can no longer compete at a reasonable level?  What are you seeing in your areas?  Am I overreacting or is this cause for concern?

  2. ridiculous to not have it all in a central location, where majority of fans reside.

for a miami family to drive to tallanasty or a panama city family to drive to ft lauderdale is just more confirmation that fhsaa has no business running the organization all the HS rely on to maintain honest and right by our kids and families.....

lakeland, tampa, orlando all perfect venues, drendaught stadium, brighthouse stadium, both plenty big enought to hold state title games,

some of the old orlando stadiums would be fine too, dr phillips, west orange, etc..

fhsaa dropped the ball again, and again and again

  3. i hear over the weekend that 3 orange county schools dont have their helmets back from Riddell, that another had to send half their helmets back and several havent recieved their order back yet?

hard to practice spring ball with 30 kids standing on the side with no helmets...maybe they will share them each series, hopefully not the mouthpieces tho.  lol

    what a mess

Good football coaches and their staff are usually engaged with their players that don't participate in other sports year round.  If they are good coaches, usually playoff games are in the equation which adds another 2 to 5 weeks to their season plus another 4 weeks required for spring ball.   If a good wrestling coach has a team 2 deep for all weight divisions he is overseeing 24 kids with a small staff.  Most FB teams have double the number of kids as well as numerous more staff to hire, train, supervise, etc.. Plus we are a football state so winning is important to almost any team and without it you are replaced.  That pressure isn't quite the same with most minor sports, so yeah lots of reasons to pay FB coaches more money than other coaches.

I think maybe you misinterpreted my post.

Im not arguing that wrestling coaches should get paid more (even though every coach should get paid more) than football coaches for a longer season,

i was arguing to the post that the length of season dictates the pay scale.

any idea why they moved back the wrestling season by 2 to 3 weeks and now runs all the way to end of feb, early march?

because of those lengthy play off runs that football teams are having and those 160 and up kids are football players.

they go hand in hand.  and pressure for all coaches in all sports, regardless.

you pay football coaches more because of all that is entailed with football.  larger gates, more kids(for majority of schools), more staff, more parents to deal with, along with 10k other things.  friday nights and wins and coaching are the things that coaches enjoy doing and are the good part of the job.  the off the field has turned into more and more things CEO related now.  thats why they should get paid more...

The pay for head coaches and assistants are similar in the big sports that have long seasons. They reduce the pay according to length of season. Still not fair that a football spends a million hours and gets paid same as bowling coach practically. This would be a union issue for sure if they paid the fb coach alot more than other sports.

    that is incorrect.

and the school board/unions could care less about supplemental pay.  they are worried more about the actual teacher and asst. teacher pay than a coach.

fb coach makes more than other coaches in most every county.  their season is how long?  11 weeks of games plus 2 more weeks of practice to get ready, so 13 weeks? .  wrestling coach season is longer easily 16 weeks, baseball is longer (jan to may), track is longer (jan to may).

bowling guy here dont make as much as the volleyball coach, or the football coach.

The problem with the pay in Florida falls with the school board for the counties. Take Alachua county for example, let’s say Hawthorne is fully committed to football and want to pay a lot of money. They have to get creative and give the coach summer hours, or drivers Ed ect to up his pay. They can’t just say the football coach gets paid 85,000 and he teaches PE. If they did then every other school in Alachua county would have to pay the same amount. That’s why you see the larger salaries in Florida from single county schools or counties with 2-3 schools only. Georgia is primarily one county schools such as Lowndes or Colquitt. They only have to pay 1 head coach. You don’t have 6-8 schools that could care less about football getting paid the same amount. Texas is the same way, most of their school districts have only a few schools.

sure....but they also dont have the student population to help fund schools, as well as the people population to fund the schools or the property taxes to fund schools.

a small county with 1 school elem, middle and senior high schools, has a small population.  the hs with 2k kids can pay their coach whatever whatever because its only 1.

sure, great argument, but its flawed and wrong.

vast majority of those same 1 horse counties pay those head football coaches with a supplement AND the boosters raise the rest of it to offset.  so the funds dont come right from the school district.  therefore, when boosters get mad, (rush propst), they can go to school board and vote that guy out....because they help pay.

texas is a bit different, but the property taxes there in those small 1 horse school districts are so insanely expensive to live in, and the actual infrastructure is awful.  they rather pay a fb coach 90k, have turf football field and a jumbo tron, than have roads and sidewalks and pavement and street drainiage, signage, etc.

those guys get paid there 12 months, but they also go 4-16 in 2 seasons and get kicked to the curb, even tho no real players, small lineman, new system, etc.  board dont care, bring in a new guy he can fix it.

texas also is the open transfer policy, if you move/provide an address, you can play wherever you want.  with little to no questions.

ive said for long time, fla coaches want to get paid, but be careful what you wish for.  when you get several hands in the pot to help stir, they all want a say so.

cant imagine if booster club president didnt like that we ran the ball on 3rd and goal and didnt pass it and settled for a fg and lost by 2, and he goes to ad who is cousin to the school board member of the distrcit and brother to the principal.  and coach is in the office on monday (or coffee shop saturdays) explaining his reasoning on why he made that call to a room full of non football/football wannabes becasue they watch it on saturdays.

be carefull what you wish for....  thats reality in texas, georigia, south carolina, alabama....

  7. some FB coaches push it, some dont.

fb coaches are greedy about their kids, for whatever reason.  they should push them to do everything possible.

wrestling by far is the best sport for any big kid or small kid for that matter.

want to learn how to move someone with force?  it aint moving a weight bar thats gonna get that done in real life,

learn how to take ownership and compete, cant blame anyone if you got your tail whipped on the mat.

and run track.....with a good track coach, who knows how to teach you how to run.

We need to figure out some way to differentiate between "school choice" and "team choice."

and all these coaches moving to texas, georgia, alabama, south carolina, for the big cash they spend on the coaches supplement/pay increase/booster club check, whatever you want to call it,

if florida ever moves to a high paying coaches state, you think school choice and honesty is bad now,,,,,,coach makes 100k and he doesnt want to get fired(who does at any pay, but hear me out) you dont think they will go to every measure possible to steal kids from the next school?!?!?!??!?!!  florida becomes the wild wild west and anything goes.

Truth hurts Columbia. Please explain how Seminole got placed in Metro when they were in suburb with original idea. Maybe so Lee county could escape and get its 2 members to vote for separating Florida in A  and C track football divisions.   While you are adding fake titles...why dont you just Create 286 classifications so all of you can be fake state champs. Participation trophies for all country bumkin teams.

im trying real hard to figure out why you care so much?  is your team in sub urban and your super butt hurt? or is your team in metro and you can figure out why you wont win a state title now?  if the answer is neither, you are really emotional about this.

suburban doesnt help the suburban teams as much as everyone/anyone thinks.  metro still will be majority of same teams winning anyways.

it hurts the middle of the road teams in both classes and lumps them with alot of the same districts they were already in

    or

lumps them with teams they were not going to beat regardless of any class.

the 5-5 teams will still be 5-5

the 9-1 teams will still be 9-1

get rid of school choice, which wont happen, is the only real solution to the recruiting issue we have in the state.  put back in the 365day mandatory sitout period for transfers. major major fines for coaches, suspensions, etc.

    may get something straight here.

But the Fact is Madison before they created the charter school had 800 students and when you add Madison and the charter school together they have 800 students so that puts Madison in 3A. But keep taking home a asterisk state title if that make you happy or just offer sports at the charter school.

doesnt lakeland high have a charter school on their campus too?  art school or something?

I thought Dillard had one of the biggest high school campus in the nation but whewww these Texas schools are massive in enrollment

6A allen Texas has 7,000 kids what the hell & other schools have 5,000 where as our 8A schools are 2,500 enrollment wow

allen is a 1 horse town.  the school board there did not want to split up a tight knit community.  so they expanded the school, upwards and outwards.

texas is different in that each school district has is a community.  like dillard and the feeder schools would be its own independent school district.  pay coaches what you want, do what you want to the school, etc.

I honestly think that, once this is said and done, you may have a lot more teams opting to go Independent or try to form another league, sort of like the talk that came out of South Florida schools during the COVID craziness of 2020. I wouldn't blame a lot of places. I've seen a few different, yet similar, projections. In my area, why would a school like East River want to be in a District with Wekiva, Edgewater AND Jones? Or why would the two new programs in Orlando want to be with Bishop Moore, Lake Highland Prep and Windermere Prep? When will two new programs be able to compete with three private schools? There's obviously more examples in the Suburban Plan too. One projection I saw had George Jenkins in Polk County with Lakeland, Lake Gibson, Kathleen and Bartow.

I would not be surprised to see a large group of teams just opt to do their own thing.

was thinking about the orange county schools that the plan that doesnt help those teams that wouldnt win regardless, colonial, freedom, cypress creek, east river, university, oak ridge.  metro plan doesnt change much for them.  they should all go independent and form own league. throw in lake howell, winter springs, poinciana, liberty, thats a 9 game, 10 team league of almost the same kids yearly....at least they would all be competitive with each other.

add in some others, hagerty, gateway, toho, st cloud, harmony, space coast, titusville, celebration, south lake, east ridge, they could all battle it out for bragging routes for some made up cup trophy playoffs.

bet all those coaches would do it too....

  13. 50 minutes ago, Perspective said:

You do understand that the state legislature essentially told the FHSAA that they could not do this, don't you?

I do know that, only because of the polk county crap that happend.

its BS man, 365 transfer rule used to be the norm.  and it stopped this silly stuff of kids playing for 3 teams in 4 years because " i want to play linebacker and coach been sleeping on me"  and ends up playing DE....lol

  14. 1 hour ago, Floridaatlantic1 said:

The elite teams will crush everyone else just like always. Separate the Private schools into own divisions and then do competitive shuffling for rest of state and you will get rue parity and the recruiting power houses get to destroy each other instead of the schools that do not cheat or do not have advantage or 7 d- 1 recruits magically appearing at their school  for academic reasons.

you honestly think that the privates are the major recruiters?  I have a bridge I like to sell ya then.....

the metro schools are the absolute worst kept secrets at "school choice" recruiting.  just read some of the posts here.....this coach, this player, this player, etc.....I can think of a school or 5 in each metro county that has more d1,2,3, etc kids on their football team that dont belong to them than their own d1,2,3 kid.

the problem isnt privates, while it is a problem in itself that they are lumped with public, the problem is school choice.....if fhsaa would hammer down and say, live here go here or dont play, add in the 365 day transfer rule like previoulsy mentioned, that stops all of it.  move or not, cant play for a year.

  15. 4 hours ago, Floridaatlantic1 said:

One last point. The metro suburban plan does not address the private school dominance issue at all. They will continue to win most of the state championships.

but it kinda does though....those powerhouse privates are in the metro plan(for the most part).  which is where they should be.  nobody wants to see sta play podunk county in round 1 of the playoffs....or 2 or 3....

  16. 3 hours ago, Floridaatlantic1 said:

After looking at each possible division. Here is a simple breakdown of who the state champs will be every year.

Metro 1    Jax Trinity or Champagnat                  Suburban- Madison

2 Miami central or Cardinal gibbons                              Victory Christian or John Carrol

3  St. Thomas Aquinas or Northwestern                        Cocoa every year- no competition at all and might win by 100

4 Apopka versus Columbus  yearly                                Mainland , St, Augustine , or Naples

                                                                                                          Venice / Osceola classic yearly

Please explain how this will lead to great Parity. There will be less. I would bet these team listed above win 95% of the next 2 year state championships. Heck, don't even bother playing the season. Just play the state championships week 1 and let all other contests be scrimmages like the spring games.  The private schools will win 4 to 5 state championship a year. Easy solution is to place privates in own division and move teams up and down divisions based on success or failure. Too hard for the FHSAA to figure out.

the suburban side, I think your forgetting all the polk county schools....and daytona area schools.  some real good football played in both spots, mainland, lake gibson, lakeland, kathleen, new smyrna,

and some of it is going to be, how the 260 schools are split into 4 classes, sure roughly 70 per class, I get that, but the FTE numbers are where its going to be tricky.  having a 2k school with a 3k student school, doesnt make much sense, and 1 of those proposed I saw that several places.

the way I see it, its about competitive balance, yes, but it also give some of those schools a shot to make the playoffs, who may never ever get a chance the other way.  now does that mean they are deserving.  well, thats a different story

  17. 33 minutes ago, Ray Icaza said:

100%, the problem is clear and you can leave school choice for an education available to everyone at both public and private.  Just restrict students not zoned for that school to sit out a year for HS sports.  It won't fix the problem completely as some schools will choose to gamble not getting caught but it would be a huge step in the right direction.

i 100% agree.  those kids that transfer cannot do any extracurriculars, as you couldnt just say sports someone would flip their grits over that.  no theater, no dance, no football, no band, no, no, no.  you live by your high school go there and stfu, or move, legally, and no forged lease papers that you can find forms on the internet for and fill out.....

yes, I have seen that before.....

kids going past 3 hs to go play sports is ridiculous.

  18. metro doesnt help some of those teams.  look at orlando/orange county, sanford/seminole county.

suburban doesnt help some of the osceola, lake, brevard teams making the playoffs either.

school choice is the issue. period, its just now recruiting is legal, where before it wasnt, but still done yearly.

fix that, and balance to the state occurs.  sorta
