On the one hand, the fact that this guy is a rapper might lead some folks to believe that he would have a certain sense of relevancy and credibility in the inner-city part of Miami.   However, the fact that LakelandGator and DarterBlue know who this guy is, and know that he's a rapper, makes me wonder whether his relevancy window closed in the 80's or 90's.   :D

So, this thread started with a post that a high school football coach in Miami called out one or more other high schools and the local university for cheating/aiding the cheating, but I've seen nothing substantive.   Who's doing what?

    Everyone knows

I'm not exactly sure what to say about this, so I'll simply point out that it was announced today that IMG Academy has been sold to a private equity group for $1.25 billion.   :o

That means that IMG (students and staff) are going to be squeezed for every penny the firm paid for them, lol.  It could also mean that a potential more lucrative deal on the backend.  Also possible is rebranding, IMG relocation and/or the dismantling of IMG altogether.  Either way, I can guarantee that changes are coming.

In the spirit of getting back on track and trying to talk some football, Venice has released their full schedule for the 2023 season:

Week 0 - Tampa Bay Tech

    Week 1 - Armwood

    Week 2 - @ Cocoa

    Week 3 - @ Miami Northwestern

    Week 4 - Bye

    Week 5 - River Ridge

    Week 6 - Riverview

    Week 7 - Manatee

    Week 8 - Sarasota

    Week 9 - Palmetto

    Week 10 - IMG's Varsity Team

    Week 11 - Clearwater

Thoughts? This schedule looks much more manageable than what Venice has played the past few seasons. Still tough, though a bit disappointing. I think they can go undefeated or just have one loss.

Why is this schedule a bit disappointing?

Merry Christmas happy new years all that good stuff lol.

hope everybody been good with y’all boys just a few more months until football season back in play.

Welcome back!  You already know people disappear after the finals.  Some ban themselves before the finals.:D

The famous Bok Tower has been vandalized.  A suspect was seen peddling away from the scene in the early morning hours on a tricycle with a 1967 state champs bicycle plate and shouting "Who's your daddy IMG?"  A number of historical hs football polls with a consistently overrated team highlighted on each found at the scene may be evidence.  Anyone with information concerning this crime is encouraged to call the Polk County crime hotline at 800-WEOWNLC.

I saw the Daytona Mainland girls win the 5A state championship on February 25, the Mainland boys 5A semi-final, Belen Jesuit's win over Orlando Jones in the other semi on March 2nd, and my Mainland Buc boys loss in the 5A final March 4th. The only minor complaint I have is missing out on "FRED'S"  for lunch this year.  As for the I-4 commute (3 times in 8 days) what a F' n nightmare !

There's your brand new Mainland trophy Dan.  Enjoy!  Regarding I-4, just wait until construction starts up again in Polk County, smh.

Tough loss for WH. They had the ball with a tie score and turned it over, leading to a game winning layup for Columbus.

We are extremely proud of a team of local kids taking a recruited up, nationally ranked AAU team to the buzzer.

We're not gonna start using the "R" word!  Successfully Enrolled (S.E.) :D  Didn't one of WH's players win a title with Bartow a few years ago?  To your point, Polk has athletes to compete with anyone.

I must admit you were right again and we are starting to agree a lot, which concerns me considering the battles we have had on the site.

But in all seriousness, both WH programs are elite in basketball. The young women more so than the young men. WH ladies have won at least 5 state titles to my memory. The men on the other hand have been runner-up about the same number of times, including 2022. Will the men get that elusive trophy this year?

Many of us in Polk hope so, but unfortunately that school in south Florida named after the Italian explorer will be favored to beat WH and send them home with another 2nd place trophy. :(

Not the Blue Devils' year.  Boys lost 50-48 and the girls lost 47-43 in competitive games.

That possibility should not deter from doing the right thing when it comes to "Fairness".  Recent history has shown yours is a point well made, though the other side appeals and if it gets to the highest court more times than not that set of judges will rule correctly.

Then it gets challenged in court, where a savvy lawyer goes judge shopping to file his case with hopes some nut case judge gives him the decision he wants.

Based on the issues I've seen first hand when I worked at the Supreme Court, it depends on the issue especially when the matter of Judicial funding comes into play.  Sad, but true.

Here is something that occurred to me as I thought about the bill to make FHSAA an appointed board by the governor.  The FHSAA is a voluntary organization made up of both public and private schools. The FHSAA goes back to 1920 and pre-dates the current state constitution. The FHSAA was not created by the state legislature through statute. In fact, it wasn't until the 1980s that the state legislature recognized the FHSAA as the governing body for interschoolatic sports and the language of such doesn't state that public schools have to join; it is more or less implied.  While the state legislature can mandate policy for public schools,  they cannot do so for private schools.  I would argue that given the history of the FHSAA the state legislature has no authority to dissolve or to interfere with how the FHSAA is set up. The only authority that the legislature has would be to form a new entity for public schools only.

I said the same in the now locked topic: 16805 more meddling by the state legislature.  Shout out to @Joshua Wilson for the attempt to keep it going, lol.  It became toxic very quickly and I stated (while actually laughing when I added my last post) that this topic won't last long.

However, there's a very dangerous precedent presented under the guise of doing what's in the best interest of Florida at the expense of Freedom.  The sad part is, we can find countless examples of this type of behavior throughout world history and if you're on the side that aligns with the current power structure, there's nothing wrong, UNTIL IT IS.

Passing on information from the January meetings of the Football Advisory Committee (FAC) and the Athletic Directors Advisory Committee (ADAC).  The most important items:

    1) Adding a 5th Suburban Division: endorsed by FAC; not endorsed by ADAC

    2) Adding a 5th Metro Division: endorsed by FAC; endorsed by ADAC

    3) Increase size of districts/reduce number of districts: endorsed by FAC; not endorsed by ADAC

    4) Incorporate margin of victory into Power Rankings, capped at 16 points: endorsed by FAC; endorsed by ADAC

Remember, these are only recommendations to the Board of Directors, not policy decisions.

Summary:  There continues to be significant concern with the number and size of districts from coaches, athletic directors, etc. across the state.  There is a discussion item on the upcoming FHSAA Board of Directors meeting regarding the Metro and Suburban classifications, specifically that member schools have expressed concern about small districts (as little as 2 to 3 teams), schools moving into the SSAC, schools having difficulty finding 10 games, etc.  These are all observations that have been discussed on this board so they are not a surprise, but getting a consensus on potential solutions going forward should be interesting.  On the bright side, it looks like margin of victory will be included in some way into the Power Rankings.  More detailed information is available on pages 4-5 and 37-45 of the attached link: Florida High School Athletic Association (fhsaa.com)

    Thank you for the update!

There's another forum like this one called "FlaVarsity" and they have some sort of long-running inside joke called the "slaps" or the "slap nation".  I've always wondered what on Earth this is and they won't explain it over there.  So what is this already?????

There are more qualified people to answer that question BUT, from my time over there slap nation were some of the more outspoken, shit talking posters.  Very entertaining.  That board died a terrible death, lol.

    Here's my perspective:

If you build up a program the right way -- the clean way -- to the point where kids want to be a part of your program, good for you.  Under those circumstances (difficult as they may be now under the existing rules), a coach ought to proudly exclaim "We welcomed in 15 transfers this past season -- kids that could have gone anywhere they wanted, but who chose to be part of our program.   And those kids made our team better.  Thankfully, our school is not at capacity, so we could take them in and they certainly helped turn our team into a state championship caliber team."

On the other hand, if anyone affiliated with the school (the head coach, assistant coach, alum, supporter, "handler," etc.) is out there beating the bushes, approaching kids at 7 on 7 events, contacting parents of kids 100 miles away, or doing anything else to 'encourage' kids to transfer to their school, the individuals responsible for the actions deserve to be punished and the school should face penalties, including being ineligible for state championship series for a year or more.

It's just that simple:  attracting transfers is OK; recruiting transfers is not.

Surprised the FHSAA hasn't created their own version of a transfer portal for visibility and transparency since all parties involved are quick to leak info all over social media anyway.:D

Whether you are identifying 8, 16, or 32 teams after the regular season to play in a proposed Open Division, the only realistic ways to do so are either using computer rankings or a committee (like California does).  As you have shown, any of the flawed computer rankings will omit some deserving teams to the benefit of less deserving teams.  Since the FHSAA seems married to its Power Rankings, that would be the inevitable outcome.  A committee would likely face criticism for geographic bias, favoritism to "powerhouse" programs, etc.  I still prefer the California model of using a committee to identify the top two teams to play in a single Open Division championship game after the playoffs, although I could live with a "Final Four" like the college football playoffs.  Another question is why the FHSAA is suddenly interested in this concept.  Are they truly interested in identifying the "best of the best"?  As the author of the original article said, "An Open Division, especially one filled with premier programs and top recruits, also could help the FHSAA land a major TV contract".  There's your answer.

Money, of course.  If it was really about the "best of the best", that would've been done decades ago.  Florida talent is not a secret as the nation regularly stocks up.

  15. 4 hours ago, Dr. D said:

Any computer ranking has some arbitrary elements pulled out of thin air.  Good luck getting the formula for the FHSAA Power Rankings.  Maybe you have to know the secret handshake.  Folks applaud the RPI for being transparent, but there is no standard to back it up.  Of the states that use the RPI for selecting/seeding their playoff teams, various weights are applied to the team's record, opponents' record, and opponents' opponents' record:  40/40/20; 35/65/0; 30/40/30; 45/45/10; 37.5/37.5/25; 35/35/30.  Which one is more accurate? more statistically significant?  Florida changed the weighting after one year of use.  Which one was right?  Varying the weights applied to the three components of the RPI can produce a different ranking for the same set of teams.  So while the RPI may be more transparent, it is also arbitrary and inconsistent.  If you're saying on-the field results are the gold standard, and anything involving computer algorithms is a charade, I'm with you 100%.

When you phrase it like that, I'm against all off-field multipliers:P.  Going back to that article and looking at the potential open divisions; both the original 8 team open division and the 2 open divisions containing 16 teams based on population, I have a few questions.  The first question is "What makes some of these teams worthy" and others not?  We've all heard and will continue to hear that there's no perfect system or solution.  However, it would be safe to say that the data sample used for this article to discuss an open division is skewed in favor of a rating system that overvalued some teams and devalued others.  As a coach, AD or board member, be afraid, very afraid because this would certainly cause an outcry.  In active in 2022, below are the teams that would've it and others that missed the boat:

Open Division (8 Teams) ~38% teams lost to teams rated lower that DNQ

    1. Miami Central (State Champ)
    2. Edgewater (lost to Jones who didn't make this list, but would qualify based on population under a 2 division system)
    3. St. Thomas Aquinas (State Champ)
    4. Trinity Christian (lost to UC who didn't make this list, but would qualify based on population under a 2 division system)
    5. Bartram Trail (lost to Buchholz who did not qualify for any list)
    6. Chaminade-Madonna (State Champ)
    7. Columbus (State Champ)
    8. Plantation-American Heritage (Runner-up)

State champs missing: Lakeland, Lake Wales, Cocoa, First Baptist, Hawthorne
State runner-ups missing: Apopka, Homestead, Venice, Mainland, Florida High, Trinity Catholic, CCC, Northview

    Open Division (16 Teams)

Population 1500 & up  50% lost to teams ranked lower that DNQ

    1. Edgewater (lost to Jones who qualified for this list)
    2. St. Thomas Aquinas (State Champ)
    3. Bartram Trail (lost to Buchholz who did not qualify for any list)
    4. Columbus (State Champ)
    5. Plantation-American Heritage (Runner-up)
    6. Lakeland (State Champ)
    7. Pine Forest (lost to Choctawhatchee who did not qualify for any list)
    8. Jones (lost to eventual state champ Homestead)

State champs missing: Homestead, Lake Wales
State runner-ups missing: Apopka, Venice, Mainland

Population under 1500  50% lost to teams ranked lower that DNQ

    1. Miami Central (State Champ)
    2. Trinity Christian (lost to UC who qualified for this list)
    3. Chaminade-Madonna (State Champ)
    4. University Christian (lost to CCC who qualified for this list)
    5. Clearwater Central Catholic (Runner-up)
    6. Cardinal Gibbons (lost to AH who qualified for both lists)
    7. Florida High (Runner-up to state champion Cocoa who did not qualify for any lists)
    8. Miami-Booker T. Washington (lost to Miami Norland who did not qualify for any lists)

State champs missing: Cocoa, First Baptist, Hawthorne
State runner-ups missing:  Trinity Catholic, Northview

Which brings me to question 2:

Based on what I posted above, is anyone okay with the percentage of how many teams were highly rated only to bite the dust?  Hind sight is 20/20 so right now, we all have the luxury to speculate on how to best approach potential change.  Imagine a system that potentially leaves more than a few championship-caliber teams out based on their "rating".  This is it right here!  LOL
