This year's 3A matchup between Chaminade-Madonna and King's Academy will be the third time in FHSAA history that teams from Broward and Palm Beach counties will play each other for a state title.  As you'll see below, state title matchups involving teams from adjacent counties have been fairly rare, though they seem to be taking place more often in recent years.

    2017 3A Chaminade vs Oxbridge

    2009 5A Plant vs Manatee

2005 6A  Deerfield Beach vs PB Gardens

2004 4A Armwood vs Lake Gibson

    1982 3A Titusville vs Osceola

    1968 A Jesuit vs Kathleen

2003 4A Armwood vs Lake Gibson as well.

We had a Boyz of Poison group at FAMU... I wonder if related.

Yes, spinoff.  Do you remember Foo (Chris Anthony) or Kwame King ring a bell? Kwame was older and graduated with Ray.  Chris graduated from LG and went to Fam with me from ‘94-‘99.  We go all the way back to the defunct John F Cox on Memorial blvd.

22 wins in 11 seasons.  Now that a culture of losing is entrenched, it will be difficult to turn around.  When I heard about them building that school, I thought it was an odd location.

Maps don’t lie, LOL.  Attached is what was supposed to happen immediately north of Tenoroc.  To date, the only plans that have taken shape are Florida Polytechnic and land acquisition for a new hospital.

All but a handful of the schools above are Class 5A-8A.  Teneroc, a newer school that is only 4A, is a rarity.  Did the school not grow as they had anticipated?

Tenoroc was anticipated to have a larger student body due to the Florida housing boom that eventually went bust.  Of all the newer schools constructed in Polk County, Tenoroc is the most isolated in terms or nearby population.  Although technically in Lakeland and a stone’s throw from Auburndale, there is literally nothing around it.  If the Polytechnic area matures and planned developments take shape, Tenoroc will mostly likely see a bump in population.  However until that time, the Titan program will be at the whim of established neighborhoods miles away to the east and west.  I always felt like the high school in that area was built too soon.  The county should’ve started in Southwest Lakeland.

Below are 100 schools that opened since 1992 in the most populous areas of Florida.  Only 21 of these schools made the playoffs this year(23 did last year), and only 8 of them won a playoff game this year(11 did last year).  Those that made the playoffs this year have been bolded, and those that won at least one playoff game have an asterisk beside them.  Amongst those who didn't, relatively few have had significant success in football since the school opened, and for those that did, the success was often short-lived.  Hillsborough County is the poster child for this phenomenon.

The 100 schools below have won a total of 214 playoff games between them.  20 of those 200 victories were by Bartram Trail.  Listed after each team is the year the school opened and the number of playoff (p/o) wins by each school since they opened.  43 of the schools have never won a playoff game.  Only Bartram Trail, Viera, Cypress Bay, Flanagan, Fleming Island, Northview and Braden River have 8 or more playoff wins.

Approximately 45% of teams in Classes 1A-8A made the playoffs this year.  So, the 21% of  teams from the list below that made the playoffs this season is disproportionately low.

The amount of big, new schools is unprecedented in Florida's history.  Existing schools are becoming mega-schools (ie Lehigh High below), potentially moving them up in class to an even more competitive environment.

    https://www.news-press.com/story/news/education/2018/07/06/lehigh-senior-high-growing-into-mega-school-rapid-growth/760552002/

The upper classes have become loaded with "newer" schools.  In a sense, they have been thrown into the fire before their programs have a chance to get traction.  And even after 20 years, some are still struggling.  With the current environment of talent concentrating at less and less schools, one has to wonder if these programs will ever get traction.

If Florida is overflowing with talent, why have so many of these teams struggled?  If nothing changes, is it possible that in 25 years we will have yet another 75 "new" schools in the upper classes who struggle?

    Totals below by class:

...another tidbit.  13 of the 21 teams mentioned above who made the playoffs lost in the first round.  Of those 13, 6 had a running clock put on them.

    Hagerty(7A) 48-7

    Sickles(7A) 39-0

    West Broward(7A) 43-0

    Wiregrass Ranch(7A) 43-7

    South Lake(6A) 54-0

    Coral Springs Charter(4A) 55-10

    Is it really a surprise?

    Two words:

    Sprawl
    Demographics

I think it would be interesting to see how these newer schools have affected programs they were meant to relieve.  For example, looking at Polk County below are the new schools and the schools in which they drew their population from.

George Jenkins (1993) -> Lakeland, Lake Gibson, Kathleen
Lake Region (1995) -> Winter Haven, Bartow
    Ridge (2005) -> Haines City
Tenoroc (2008) -> Lakeland, Auburndale, Lake Gibson

  6. Ray Lewis.  Aside from knowing through mutual friends in high school, I’ve seen him a couple of times throughout his UM years when he used to dance with Boyz of Poison (BoP) out of Lakeland and once after the Ravens’ super bowl win.

I also see Fred Williamson on a somewhat regular basis here in Atlanta.  He’s a cool ass guy and loves smoking cigars and hanging out at the Intercontinental in Buckhead.

  7. What can I say?  This will be the 6th time the Naughts and Raiders have met in the finals in two different classes and 8th overall dating back to 1996.  Combined, both teams have appeared in the finals 24 times with 16 state titles and 2 national titles a piece.

Forget the history between these two programs.

    Who takes it?

I have followed this site since it's inception. I am a former coach and AD. I finally had to join and give my two cents.

This is high school football. 99% of all people actually involved understand that someone else might be better than them. With ANY system, there are going to be "bubble teams" and exceptions. Without exception, the teams that truly deserve to be in playoffs will get in. Occasionally, there will be teams that get in that others deem "do not deserve it" based on there teams resumes. Good for them!

I do know this: THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT BELONGS ON A POLITICAL BALLOT.

    Thank you!

8AGeorge Jenkins(4-1) @ 7ALakeland(6-0)    Lakeland has owned this rivalry and will likely win this one easily, but George Jenkins may put up more of a fight than they have in recent years.

Lakeland played flat, missed 3 xpts and still won 42-0 with a running clock late -

    Not to mention turnovers too....

  10. Guys yesterday I had a set back.. Went to the ER at Aventura yesterday and found out I had Blood clots on the base of my lungs... They don't know how it came. My family don't have them and they said it's rare that somebody my age gets them.. But I'm on blood thinners and up n walking to celebrate my 33rd bday with my twin sister today... Felt like sharing this with you guys... Y'all stay bless famil!!!!

Happy Birthday! Peace to you and your family. At some point in life, we all may have setbacks regarding our own health or the health of someone close to us which I can tell you firsthand IS NOT something I'd wish on my worst enemy. Stay prayed up and know that everything will be okay. You have family and friends in your corner and this board. Thank you for sharing your story because life happens and the young people that frequent this platform need to understand that the game of life is no joke.

    Hang in there bro!

  11. Oh boy.....

No , I haven't been to Tiger "Stadium"  but how does it compare to the SIXTH biggest in Texas?

    versus Tiger Stadium Lake City:

    What am I missing?

Go get your head examined, kid....

You're wrong for that Broward (as I'm laughing my ass off).

  12. I'm sorry but Lake Gibson doesn't have a shot period. Yeah anything can happen which is why you play 4 quarters, but the talent roster from top to bottom on both sides isn't comparable at all. Carol City on defense is fire I mean that defense is clicking on all cylinders and when the offense picks up its a rap. Carol City has played IMG Academy, Oxbridge Academy, Lakeland, Southridge, Central, Northwestern twice and a so called good Mainland squad. When you look at Lake Gibson who have they played or what was there signature win on the season.

They have a better shot than Lakeland.
