Surprised??? Really???? This is today’s media. They don’t need/use facts for headlines, let alone sports!!!! Sports is simply a microcosm, in every way, of this country today. If you want it to b a truth, it’s a truth. Kids are gonna lie/exaggerate, but sadly some of the coaches: a mentor, father figure, & leader are the culprits........

The QB’s dad is like the HC or OC on that team. I was just in the stands, but it’s a bad look for a brand new school if the coach is just going to lie. Especially if it’s unchecked. I’m sure other teams are/will be following their lead

4 of 6 touchdown passes accounted for 188 yards. So he would've had to throw for 329 more yards. How he would manage to do that in a half is unbelievable.  His stat totals for the season pretty much are perfect over 500 yards rushing on 50 carries and 20td passes to 4 ints with pretty 3000 yd passing

Like I said…seems absolutely ridiculous. Going to a newspaper to make claims that are false makes coaches look like clowns.

I’ve seen a lot of blowouts. But to score 6 times yet amass 517 passing yards in a half? An average of 87 passing yards per drive? Makes me wonder…

  3. If a coach is willing to go to a media outlet and say that, I’m curious how many other games he did that with.

I am sure a lot of other teams do it too. I just wish there was some way to verify things like stats because coaches will do things like that guy at Davenport as long as there’s no way to verify it.

Anyone else have anything they’ve seen that looks completely outlandish?

    You mind providing examples?

I was at that game because I have a few buddies who teach/coach there. LBV got dismantled, but they had two drives that took up almost an entire quarter on offense. There’s 0 chance that kid threw 517 in the game, let alone a half. He may have had 350 total. A great night, but why lie about it? Also, that coach threw a screen that scored on the last play of the game while the clock was running. One of my friends is ready to start sharing all their film out to see if that QB actually has the 3000 yards they claim lol

That’s just one I saw in person. I’m sure other teams do something similar.

  5. I've always thought that you have to schedule so that you can challenge yourself a few times a year, let the rivalries drive gates and then play games that will make you compete/get better. In order to be a good team, you have to beat good teams. I'm an Osceola County/Orange County guy. The Orange County schools have so much talent it's easy to put together a tough schedule. Osceola has been hoarding talent (not meant as a recruiting-type dig - they've been good and they hold on to their talented players) and can compete with most anybody.

As for scheduling up/down a classification, I think that can be somewhat of a fallacy sometimes. Victory Christian is a private, 2A powerhouse and St. Cloud (7A) fields a varsity team of like 40 and they went down there and won this season after losing 30-7 the previous year. Not all 7A or 8A schools are the same, so it's hard to use that as a justification in some instances.

Regardless, I agree that you need to have a competitive schedule. However, competitive to a school like Cypress Creek or Celebration might look a lot different than it would to Apopka or West Orange (or insert teams in your counties here).

Who is the Toho QB that is transferring to Edgewater? Mascoe took Osceola to 8A final against Seminole this past season. Toho backed out of Spring game with Apopka; what's happening to that team?

Tyler Wesley had been a two-year starter at Toho, but I don't think he'd play QB there. Toho lost Coach Deas - who was super popular on that campus - to Feltrim Academy. A bunch of players have transferred out since, but I'd imagine that as soon as the coach left those kids were looking for the door. I would think Mascoe would stay at OHS since his dad played there and he left a great program to come play at Osceola. They are LOADED this year.

Assuming the QB transferring is Chad Mascoe; highly rated, but he seems to search out a new team every year. I was wondering who Edgewater would recruit to fill their QB vacancy.

I was talking about the QB at Toho. He ended up at Edgewater. Their best LB ended up at Dr. Phillips. That program - which was on the rise and looking to compete with OHS - is back to square 1. I had only mentioned Toho because their former coach got mentioned as a potential replacement.

Haven't heard that, he recently signed to be HC at a new private school.  For now, it is Eric Pinellas.

I would think that, if they were going to keep it in house, Pinellas would end up being the guy. I agree that they likely know who they want. It's a great job for someone. And speaking of Toho, I've heard that place is starting to sink already since Deas left. Their senior QB just transferred to Edgewater.

lots of DUDES there right now.  someone is getting gold or they let it fall apart.

be interesting to see who lands a prestigious job, this late in yr.

I'd be interested to see how many kids decide to "transfer" once Spring is over.

The fact that one of those teams is guaranteed to make the playoffs is tangible evidence that there are way too many classifications in football.

it is a combination of greed from the FHSAA, and weakness from certain coaches and athletic directors that refuse to cut classes. Florida should not have 8. Really it should be 5 but I could live with 6.

Even if the number of classifications stay the same, maybe make every classification region-based like 1A-4A. Require at least 8 games be teams in your region, with two games scheduled freely. Then, you really have to be the best of the best to have a shot.

The problem for LBV is they are in an area near Dr Phillips who gets all the talent in that area. And everything South of LBV is a barren wasteland for talent. So it’s gonna be hard. They will probably just turn into another Celebration High.

Horizon has a better chance in Winter Garden for sure

It'll be tough for sure. LBV near Dr. Phillips and Horizon near West Orange (which is on its way back up). I think there was a lot of excitement for Windermere when it opened because it was near WO and they've struggled too. I think any team starting up near Central Florida will have a tough time because of all the established schools in the area. Any news about that Tocoi Creek? I know almost nothing about them...

  12. I really hope this leads to a change in the classification system for the next two-year cycle. School population/geography alone are not the most effective ways to determine classifications or districts (especially for 5A-8A).

Osceola County is somewhat of a unique situation with that "big dog" phenomenon and a large Hispanic population.  Possibly it's a bit like Naples in Collier County or Mainland in Volusia County.  That dominant school is going to make it difficult for newer schools to get traction.

I agree with that for sure. And now, when students can transfer at will, the established powerhouse will always have the most talent (in a County like Osceola, Collier, Volusia, etc) and the others will beat up on each other trying to catch-up. But until there's a county team that can compete with and beat Osceola regularly, they'll remain unchallenged there. As for the respect piece, Osceola deserves all the recognition they can get. Great team, great coaching staff. I hope they can play for a title this year!

  14. I'm from the Orlando area and I think the biggest thing to happen in regards to Osceola is the competition. Nobody really doubts that Osceola is a good football team. But, in Osceola county, who competes with them? They zombie through every team in their county and their District isn't necessarily strong. I think the teams in Orange get more respect because the county is so deep with talent - in 8A you have Apopka, Dr. Phillips, West Orange is on the rise, etc. So Osceola being the "big dog" in their county will always have more attention on them after they lose as opposed to when they win because them losing is more newsworthy than beating up on Celebration, St. Cloud, Harmony, etc...

That said, what Coach Nichols has done there is impressive. Year in and year out, that is a solid program. They have a chance this year to finally get over the hump.

  15. I think this week has some good games as well. Again, when I look at some of these "powerhouse" schools, I don't really see anyone who can get tripped up by a much inferior opponent this week. I think these brackets have shaken out in a way that the best teams in each region will begin playing each other in Round 3. Any body think a team like Weikiva, Edgewater, etc is getting knocked out this week? I can't imagine it. Are there other areas with more potential for upsets?

  16. Looking at the brackets and with the bigger classifications really getting rolling tonight, does anyone see a chance in Rounds 1 or 2 for any major program to suffer an upset? I am not as familiar with other areas of the state as some of you are. I just know that in my area, I can't really see any major names falling off in the early rounds because the talent gap between some teams is just ridiculous.

For Poinciana sake, the district that we have been put in the last 2 times really was one of the biggest issues. With football not being a top sport for our students.  Poinciana was placed in impossible districts for the talent level on the field. Kids only see losses and why would they want to join? Other sport coaches refusing to let "their" players participate in football. That is the way it was. The basketball team had the best linebackers, receivers and running backs in the school. But they are all chasing the NBA dream. Trying to change it, One week at a time!

I'm not knocking the school; they have athletes on that campus. As for the coaches on that campus not allowing multiple sport athletes, shame on them. It does the athletes a disservice in either sport by trying to hoard them.

  18. One thing I will say about some of those 8A schools in the Orlando area is that they've either never had success or they have a student population that doesn't value football. Schools that tend to be large with a heavy population of Hispanic students tend to care more about soccer, baseball and basketball than football. It's mainly because their families didn't grow up watching football so it isn't as big of a deal. A great example is Poinciana. They are historically one of the worst football schools around but they won a State Championship in basketball a few years ago. So the athletes are on the campuses for sure. But if the programs have no history of success then the athletes see no reason to play.

Another factor is the laid-back transfer rules. Now, kids can essentially consolidate talent on teams. So that also adds to some of these massive blowouts - especially when districts consist of teams like Cypress Creek being made to play teams like Osceola and Lake Nona. Of course they'll get blown out. It's going to be like that for the foreseeable future though.
