I have Chaminade-Madonna as 4 or 5 in Broward County right now.  Chaminade did beat Miramar in Week 2,  14-13.  Both teams improved significantly as the season went on and a week 10 rematch may very well have been a toss up as well IMO.

I believe STA, AHP and Cardinal Gibbons would be a very hard matchup for CM particularly at the LOS and in the second half where I could see the CM OL and QB  possibly getting smothered in a hypothetical match...CM however would be good enough to possibly pull a upset if 100% healthy two or three times of ten.  Too many playmakers....

I have looked into  CM's losses over the last 2 years and there are some pretty strong trends:

    2017 lost 24 - 48 versus Miami Central :  Shivers = 17 carries, 41 yds, 0 TDs

    2017 lost 13-41 versus AHP: Shivers = 10 carries, 128 yds, 0 TDs

    2016 lost  21-28 versus Cardinal Gibbons: Shivers = 11 carries, 67 yards, 0 TDs

    2016  lost 6 - 20 versus Flanagan:  Shivers = 13 carries, 45 yards, 0 TDs

    2016  lost 0 - 43 versus IMG: Shivers = 6 carries, 9 yards, 0 TDs

    2016 lost  13 - 24  versus TCA: Shivers = 20 carries, 140 yards, 1 TD

Source for the above may not be official and are from: sportstrac/Miami Herald

All of these teams (IMG excluded) are 5A or higher teams.  All of these teams contained or shut down Auburn RB commit Shaun Shivers.  All of these teams pretty much had their way at the LOS (particularly defensively) versus CM,  have fast and physical defenses that were not overwhelmed with the speed of CM thus eliminating most big gains/plays.  When CM is forced to sustain  80 yard drives and can't break the big plays they have struggled.

I would add Chaminade's WR core may be one of, if the the strongest WR core in the state, they are beefed up in the middle on both sides of the ball from 2016 but depth was a clear cut problem there this year against Central, Miramar and AHP.  Outside of Oxbridge there there is no 3A team that may be able to match them in the trenches.  I have heard Berkeley Prep has a few talented big boys in the middle but they would get absolutely obliterated in every other aspect of the game.  I did expect CCC to put up a better fight at Home this past weekend.  I would like to see the highlights and box-score on that one.  If I had to guess, most of CMs scores were INT returns, special teams returns, or 30 yard + offensive gains....

I don't know if this CM team in say 8A playoffs could go 5 straight games to Orlando without getting worn down.....

I do believe 2005 Chaminade-Madonna was a better coached team, however 2016 and 2017 CM are well coached but and appear to be a bit more athletic to me.

Does this Oxbridge Academy team have the ability to slow down CM and contain Shivers which may slow down the bleeding and keep the stable of CM WRS in check?

Can the Thunderwolves find a way offensively to move the chains, eat clock against this Lions defense that seems to have matured through this season?

Oxbridge Academy has been chasing and waiting for this rematch for a year now !

We are fortunate to get the two best 3A teams playing in Orlando, and you can mark my words that this game is going to get chippy and nasty.  Oxbridge Academy has been chasing and waiting for this rematch for a year now.  Can't wait for this one!

Im hoping Oxbridge has its full deck. I'm hearing the issue with those earlier mentioned suspensions are still lingering.

  2. I don't think its a plot by the FHSAA. Its the Officials. Anything thing can trigger an Official to be against a team. It could be something he saw before the game (like someone taking a knee during the anthem), or something yelled from that particular sideline. I have seen plenty of officials make calls based on emotions. Its sad and they are human, but it happens a lot.

It’s called home field advantage for a reason y’all had it last year we have it this year gonna be the state championship Friday my opinion how do y’all travel ?

Usually travels very well. But, now with Facebook Live and live streams, it seems to have taken away from the big crowds. Being that many of folks are off for the Holidays, im hoping for a big turn out.

Madison left a few touchdowns on the field last year with stupid penalties. With that being said we are getting pahokee at home and need to prove that last year was a fluke.

From what I hear, the Refs have always been friendly to the home Team at Boot Hill. Fluke? I actually just watched the film of that game on yesterday. Anytime a team is moving the ball right at you on the ground is definitely not a fluke.

  5. 3 hours ago, Original1 said:

I actually believe that. With the exception of that cocoa game, Pahokee's performance depends on their opponent. They looked great beating 8A Park Vista, PB gardens, Seminole Ridge. Even in the lost to Vero, they were competitive. But watching them play Williston and Frostproof puzzled me.

I'm just wondering which team is going to show up at Boot Hill in Madison?

Hopefully one that hasn’t been seen this season.

    Nole,

Good question and one that nobody seems willing to speculate on. The popular census is that he heads back down South to his roots. I personally would like to see him stay at MCC. He was part of Doug Socha's American Heritage team as the D-Co, when Socha was let go he became the HC.

I think he can build a program and he's young enough to  become one of the greats in HS if he chooses to. MCC has a beautiful campus and good financial connections to the community (They're in big with Mike Erdman who sent all his kids there). They are also finishing building a nice fieldhouse.  MCC also has a built in advantage of being the only private school in a large area- yeah, there's Melbourne Holy Trinity; however, MCC is really the only viable football private school in the entire county. It's a long drive to get the athletes from Cocoa/Rockledge/Merritt Island and they do have to compete with a solid Palm Bay Magnet and quickly rebuilding Melbourne High School, but the program is well recognized enough to attract big names

I think the pieces are there for 2018 to be a better than average team, but they won't have the big weapons they do this year.  The bigger program is scheduling. The only teams that will play them are powerhouses and they won't have the Collazo's and Hardy's out there. This is why I see them struggling in 2018. But, I don't want to get a head of myself while the season is still on going.

Maybe Socha is asking him to come to Keiser with him.

Figured I haven't done a mailbag session in awhile- now is a good time to do so.

Question #1:  For a person (or people) who cover one single class maybe you should come down to Oxbridge and see how many kids we DIDN'T HAVE PLAYING THIS YEAR that are NOW PLAYING. Also, we are NOT DE-EMPHASIZING FOOTBALL stop spreading that rumor. The football team will be just as good next year as we are this year. Sorry 3A!

Response: Okay, I had to modify the message a bit as I had to take some words out. I don't "cover" class 3A- I don't actually cover anything. I'm not a paid reporter (neither is my husband or brother). Just a simple woman giving her thoughts on things after consulting with her family. We love football and while we can no longer make trips from Orlando/St. Pete to West Palm Beach due to children.

As for De-Emphasizing football, this isn't me saying this- this is everybody in the world saying it because of the Palm Beach Post article that was written about a year ago. If there's evidence (or articles or fact) to the contrary then it needs to be said. Many others, not just myself, have said the reason for the sense of urgency Oxbridge is showing is because they know this is their best chance to win states for a while. Nobody ever said Oxbridge was going to suck. Bottom line, I wouldn't talk about next year when there's plenty of this year left.

Question #2: Calvary fan here. We've had a good season, what do you think we need to do to beat CCC on Friday and how to you project us going into the future?

Hi Calvary fan here!   You've had a great season honestly. You made the playoffs for the 2nd time in school history and you won your first road playoff game, that's an amazing first step for such a young football program. Nobody is saying Calvary can't beat CCC, after all you do have Amari Burney and Deandre Ferguson 2 of the top players in the state. I feel Amari is one of the top overall players in the country.

Projecting next year is tough since I don't know what your schedule will be. While you still have Ethan White, who I feel is one of the best offensive linemen in the country you graduate Amari, Deandre, Jacque Sarnoff and your starting QB Alex Laccube. CJ Burge has the talent (but not experience) to be a very solid 3A QB going forward. I also think Smash Lopez is a blast to watch. The big question is wither River Wood transfers back to Calvary or not. My understanding is that he transferred out of Calvary, that's a huge loss since he would have been a 3rd team all state RB at the pace he was going.

I see Calvary being in the playoff mix, but CCC has all of their key pieces coming back in 2018, Tampa Catholic has all of their key pieces coming back in 2018. Both teams will get  a crazy amount of transfers for the simple fact that kids want to transfer to programs that already have a foundation. Calvary got a lot of transfers last year when Amari and Deandre transferred in because they had built something, I don't see a selling piece to get kids to want to play for the program in 2018..at least yet. A win over CCC Friday could change that mentality.

Question #3: Any love for Taylor County?

Yes! I've made new Bulldogs friends this week. A trip to Taylor County is on my agenda in the future as I hear Johnson's bakery is amazing! As a coffee loving woman, I must also try Toasted Mug/Parkside Cafe. Oh, you probably meant the football team huh? okay..okay..okay!

This is a big game for Taylor County for the simple fact that I think FSU Schools is a worthy opponent. Both teams have beat them teams they should beat and lost to teams that were clearly better than them. I freely admit, I don't know much about the teams once you go north of Winter Park and know next to nothing about Panhandle teams. I do know about Justin Wentworth and the Williston team though, he's the former OTC defensive coach who always seems to have a very good game plan. Taylor County put up a great fight on the road, but FSU Schools is coming off a huge win vs Ft. White.  I'm going Taylor County though.

Question #4: Should Chaminade just starting preparing for Oxbridge right now?

My understanding on how Chaminade does things is that their coaching staff starts breaking down the following week opponents on Wednesday afternoons. So, up to this point they've focused only on Benjamin; however, the coaches will do some very basic legwork on Calvary and CCC.  The coaching staff at Chaminade is very disciplined, so while I'm sure somebody has collected film on Oxbridge- I don't think they've looked at it in-depth yet. Another key factor is that there are 2 weeks from the State-Semi's to the State-Finals.

Question #5: Have you thought about doing a weekly podcast with your family?

Sure have and it almost happened, but when you have kids you can't commit to anything. Plus, I want to write for fun not for work.

Question #6:  Any chance you will extend your coverage to other classifications?

Probably not. I just can't get to all of the games I'd like to go to so I really stick with the Tampa private schools since I grew up there and attended St. Pete Catholic (who WILL become a good football team again..one day). Since I've become friendly with most of the coaches and parents over there, there's a personal investment to write about those teams.  There are just to many schools in 5A up, I've also found that those aren't nearly as forgiving as the smaller schools.

Case and point, I made a mistake regarding Oxbridge and was politely corrected by MuckCityChamp and I received 2 E-mails that were negative regarding Oxbridge suspensions. I don't consider either of the E-mails hate e-mails. Had this been a 6A team with a sizeable fan base, it would have been personal attacks.

I met a few of the Taylor County Coaches at the Down N Dirty camp this past summer. They were really excited about the season. Looks like they are taking care of business.

As for next season, Oxbridge will return some talent, though they will have to replace a good amount of players in the trenches. The staff pretty much knew before the season that MCC would be the team that they need to get by, so I/m guessing they are prepared.

    I have a idea

Since 1-4a have one less week of playoffs they can do this

    Wendsday

    1a:  4:00 pm ~

    3a:  8:00 pm ~

    Thursday

    2a  4:00pm ~

    4a  8:00pm~

    Friday

    5a  4:00pm~

    7a  8:00pm~

    Saturday

    6a  4:00pm~

    8a  8:00pm~

Since 1-4a play one less round then 5-8a they aren't getting a short week by putting them on Wednesday and Thursday

If needed they can expand time between games but this basic idea and gets rid of morning games

And they can flip the times each year

    So 1 year

    1a, 2a, 5a, and 6a get night game

    Next year

    3a, 4a, 7a, and 8a get night game

    Sounds good to me

You can't give Prime time to all 8 classes unless you split it into different venues

Otherwise you have to play it over 8 days which is crazy logistically

Doesn't really have to be primetime. But those 10am games are not good.

    CLASS 3A- ROUND 2 PREVIEW

    Game of the week:
#4 Melbourne Central Catholic at # 2 Oxbridge Academy

Rankings: MCC is ranked #58 in the state by Maxpreps, Oxbridge is ranked #22

This is a game that was hyped the moment the new regions were broken down. MCC who is a defending Class 3A Regional champion vs Oxbridge Academy looking for their first ever Regional championship. On paper this is an even match-up with both the Hustlers and Thunderwolves senior loaded with major division 1 talent. Both teams are battle tested going into this one, both teams have expectations of playing in Orlando.

I think Oxbridge has an advantage in the trenches, I think MCC has an advantage at the skill positions. For Oxbridge the key is going to be getting pretty on MCC Qb Joaquin Collazo and for MCC they have to find a way to disrupt Oxbridge QB Gio Richardson who is playing at a very high level right now. Oxbridge has a good 1-2 punch at RB with Meeks leading the charge. Many believe that MCC is peaking at the right time, while whispers in the background are that Oxbridge, after struggling against Lakes 2 weeks ago and a tough start against King's last week may have peaked already. I don't believe any of that- I believe that both teams will get each others best efforts and I also believe that both teams started preparing for each other weeks ago.

Jessica's Pick: Neither team is very deep, but each teams starting 11 is as good as you're going to find anywhere in the smaller schools in America. The winner of the game will come down to which linemen will wear down first. MCC brings back most of an offensive and defensive line that survived 9 overtimes last year against CCC, but that game was in Melbourne where MCC has a history of pulling special upsets. Going to Oxbridge is a totally different story. At the start of the season I had MCC in Orlando, it was my gut choice unless something happened. So this pick is really going against my gut and based more on logic. Somebody has to win..and I just think Oxbridge's CJ Smith will make one extra play to win the most thrilling game in Oxbridge Academy history..

    Oxbridge 35, MCC 32

Not taking anything away from Lakes, because they are good and athletic on defense, but the only reason that game was close is because 5 of Oxbridge"s best players were suspended for either a quarter or a half in that game.

1a should be held at Tiger Stadium

We can hold over 8k people and it's almost dead center on travel for teams in 1a

I disagree. Pahokee fans travel well and tailgate well at Championship games. The big stadiums are just fine on our side. Also, for a lot of the kids, it will be their only time to play in a major stadium in their lives. I agree with maybe changing the schedules around so that all can have a little prime time, but leave the venue alone.

He should’ve come back home to Pahokee...j/k...but I don’t think his production on the field has matched his recruiting hype. I don’t know if it’s the offensive system or the players around Joe, but his numbers aren’t GREAT...He’s a good kid (I know him personally)  that should develop (as a qb) at the next level. Physically, he’s college ready.

Olympia is a middle of the road team and although they run a spread, they don't throw it around that much. This has probably affected Milton's production. He has a great chance to do well at the next level in Michigan's system. I wish him success.

Lord knows he would have taken Pahokee to another level if he came back.

Nova vs Doral Academy gets a spot before Dillard vs Carol city

imsorry but novas 9-1 is not impressive to me and will be blown out by Doral Academy

sure sure sure u can say the same for Dillard we have a 6-4 record But also played 1 of the toughest schedules in the county and we have won 6 of 7

and im sure most feel Carol city will blow us out like last year so i understand the reasons of not putting the game up there because 99% already feel the entire District 6A 16 will sweep the first Round.

All I’m Gonna Say is We (Dillard) Either Winning Or we Gonna Fri Go down swinging to the last second and gain respect from everybody in Florida

They need to let you deliver the Pre-Game Speech.

My thought process with PV is that Miramar might take them lightly after a huge win over STA so that may keep it tight for a bit but GC has a chance to win the game but they will have to stop the run if they can't it will be a long night for GC

Now that could possible happen with Miramar. I'm worried about that with Pahokee as well. Williston has good size as plays physical. After what GC went through on Friday, they better be thinking about stopping the run in their sleep. Their DBS are good enough to take out the passing game on their own.

    1. Atlantic will have a tough one versus Plantation this Friday, Atlantic probably the deepest team in the Region for as athletes concern but I don't know how well they prepare the kids to be successful so this can come down to coaching but I'm not to sure about this one but I have to go with the home team here Atlantic by 3

    2. Seminole Ridge and Palm Beach Central this was a very close game early in the season 8-3 with Palm Beach Central winning it in the last second of this game, I look for this one to come down again to a very tough defensive battle I think any team that comes out this game will give Deerfield a very tough game the following week but this game could go any way here but I will take the home field advantage team here Central 13-7

    3. Park Vista is a team that has been scraping all season playing lower competition in the county because of scheduling but this is a very well coached team with veterans players that majority was apart of the 10-0 team last season, look for this team to give Miramar a battle for 4 quarters but in the end I have Miramar winning this one 27-17

    7a

    1. Dwyer if the right Dwyer team shows up this Friday Dwyer should win this one by plus 10 but if this Dwyer team which has been inconsistent all season don't come out the right way this one can go down to the wire and potentially lose round 1 but I have dwyer winning this one 24-14

    2. Forest Hill has accomplished a great goal just getting into the post season the first time in like 30 years or so and to be honest I think round 1 is where it ends for this Cinderella season West Broward  35-14

    4a

    1. Glades Central and University played earlier in the season with University winning that one like 13-7, since then GC has been on fire losing to only Oxbridge and Pahokee but if GC can establish its passing attack I believe GC can put up some points on this university team but I don't know how well they will do stopping the run this game against a very gun run game university presents ...I'm taking University 28-24

    3a

    1. Oxbridge over Kings 49-7.....lol I mean it's nothing to talk about to be honest I don't think Kings should be in the playoffs especially playing these caliber opponents

    1a

    1. Pahokee will sweep through the playoffs until 3rd round or so when they face Madison County but until then look for Pahokee to run through every other opponent

I agree with most of your predictions. I think Park Vista will lose big and GC will beat University this time.

  16. 10 hours ago, badbird said:

    current standings

    1 37.86 Pahokee

    2 37.5 Wildwood

    3 37.38 Frostproof

    4 36.75 Crescent City

    5 36 Williston

If Pahokee wouldn't have hit the hail mary vs Seminole Ridge they would be at 35.7 and out of the playoffs.  If they lose to Glades Central they will probably end up at 37.25 and Cresent City and Williston could end up with more points than 37.25

Pahokee would be fine even with a lost. They highly likely to get 5 more points after Seminole Ridge beats winless Royal Palm, which would boost SR up to a category 1 team. Also of Palm Beach Gardens can muster up some confidence and knock of Park Vista, that will also add another 5 with Gardens going up to a Category 3. Crescent City is done playing, so the only way they can earn points is by some of their opponents moving up a category. Williston plays against a Chiefland team who is also fighting for their playoff lives.

Agree. Harmony plays Southeast this week and is on the bubble for 7A playoffs. A victory over SE (Cat 2) could have put them over the top, but now it likely won't matter. Nothing Harmony did wrong, other than schedule a school that had to forfeit it's games the last week of the season. Win or lose, they have lost 10 potential points on the last week of the season. Same with Hardee, who actually beat SE on the field of play. While they still will make the playoffs based on district win, the have lost seeding and potential home games on the last week of the season.

FHSAA has to figure something else out on this.

I like the intention of the points system. I just think it was implemented too quickly and without alot of forethought for these type of situations.

If I'm not mistaken, Texas uses this same point system. I wonder did the FHSAA consult with them about the ins and outs of the system before they implemented it?
