broward’s public scene currently has no top tier programs, Its been like this a while because they big privates like sta heritage & chaminade. Lately though its been a shift where you have decent publics like dillard & western, deerfield beach sometimes & now I see monarch & ely are on the rise also but all still mid-tier.

So the only "top-tier" programs in Broward are the privates.

That just rubs me the wrong way bro. lol

    You're not wrong though.

Understood but respectfully you’re from pinellas, unless you’re actually down here I wouldn’t expect you to know that those schools are not threats when it comes to the best of the south. Mid-tier is what they are with nothing taken away from them, great squads just not top tier.

    Who's "top-tier" in Broward? (non-private)

  3. Couple issues in my opinion...

#1 - Many parts of Florida tend to be transient areas. There's going to be less "community feel" if most of the people in the neighborhood AREN'T FROM THE AREA. There's naturally going to be less neighborhood pride. They're not vested. Shoot, certain parts of South Florida people don't even say hi to their neighbors. LOL

#2 - Where I'm at (South Florida) people are extremely fair-weather. If you ain't winning, they ain't going. It's that way with the college and pro teams as well. Too many other options on a Friday night.

I've coached all over the state and I've witnessed some great atmospheres at Vero, Hardee and Manatee.

  4. Listen...

I had a kid last year who came to us from another school. They thought he was mediocre. He could never find a permanent spot on the field.

He was only 5'9" 170lbs...but he had that "dawg" in him. A relentless, tough, coachable kid.

I moved his little butt to OLB (we run a 3-4) and he started over a 6'1" 215lb kid with SEC offers.

The season ends and he's First Team All-State. 96 tackles, 20 TFL's, 11 sacks. He's the ONLY Linebacker on the entire All State team that's the size of a DB. lol

Kid was even featured in a national Max Prep article for "Top-100 Under The Radar Players".

    Martavius "Tay" Davis.

You gotta believe in these kids, man. You can't always judge a book by it's cover.

  5. In the 13 years of coaching the best D-line I ever had was about...

    DE - 6'0" 200lbs

    NT - 6'1" 262lbs

    DE - 6'1" 210lbs

We ran a 3-4 and slanted the DL. So we didn't necessarily have to be as big.

And we played 8A football. Three of the teams in our district made it to the state finals at some point. (Miramar, Flanagan, Cypress Bay)

Both DE's had back-to-back double-digit seasons for sacks. The NT signed with Western Illinois (1AA). One year we had the #1 defense in the entire county. The 2 DE's were absolutely relentless and very polished technicians.

I've coached Corners who signed with P5 teams. But one of the best HIGH SCHOOL CB's I ever coached was a (maybe) 5'7" 150lb kid who was gonna quit football and focus on lacrosse until he met me. Ultra competitive kid. Straight dawg. One of the toughest kids I've ever coached. I was told by the HC that he was "too small" and "got bombed all the time last season". I got there, installed a different scheme, the kid went from being an afterthought to finishing his Senior season with 8 interceptions. (and he dropped at least 3) In the arguably the toughest 8A district in the state at that time. I was told NOT to put this kid out there. He turned out to be our best cover guy. I actually used his LOOKS to bait OC's into throwing his way cause I knew he'd likely pick it off.

Point I'm trying to make is, you can always find a spot for a kid if he's high motor, high effort. I don't give a damn if he's only 6'0" 230lbs. The mistake some HS coaches make is that they act like they're fielding a team to win COLLEGE games. Your job is to win HIGH SCHOOL games. And quite frankly, some of the best HIGH SCHOOL players aren't the most physically gifted.

Now, you may not win a state title with a roster full of kids like that, cause at some point you'll run into a team like STA and their overall team talent will overwhelm you. But, having a team with a couple guys like that is always valuable IMO. You can win a lot of games with kids like that.

Because they beat Chaminade well they did beat Dwyer back in the day too, o yea and you can add Pahokee to the list

Vero's defense played like that against Chaminade because Chaminade's offense last year was one dimensional.

Every one of those teams you mentioned would probably put a running clock on Vero other than maybe Gibbons.

Shutout Chaminade 21-0 in a defensive game, South Florida teams love defensive games and this is the real blueprint how to beat em, and that's to beat em at their own game....If Vero defensive plays like this, they'll beat the following teams....

    Miami Central

    Miami Northwestern

    Carol City

    BTW

    AHP(Very well coached team)

    Cardinal Gibbons

How exactly did you come to this conclusion after watching them versus Deerfield?

  8. Unfortunately some of the best, most detailed coaches are currently at programs that don't have the athletes to compete for States. Some of the programs you see competing for States don't have the greatest coaches on their staff, they have great recruiters. They bring in enough kids every year to compete at a high level.

As far as creativity in scheme is concerned...I don't necessarily agree with that. I saw some of everything this playoff season. Spread RPO offenses, power running schemes, Odd front defenses, Even front defenses, Cover-4 schemes, Cover-3 schemes, etc.

Football is a fad sport anyway. Every few years some new scheme becomes hot and everybody wants to run it. We've seen it in college and the NFL. The schemes are even less diverse on those levels than they are on High School.

    Coach,

I wanted to say how impressive the Bucks were last night. Vero has been exiting the 2nd or 3rd round for years, but I’ve always felt they were in the game and if a play or two had gone their way, it could have been different.

Last night this was not the case, you guys were simply on another level and Vero struggled just to avoid a running clock. Best of next week against Columbus and moving forward.

Thank you. Yall are a class act program and wish yall nothing but the best.

By far the hardest offense I've had to prepare for all year in terms of scheme.

  10. Playing in Vero was an incredible experience and their Head Coach is a class act. 35-7 may seem like a walk in the park but Vero is NOT an easy team to prepare for or coach against, they made our defensive staff use their brains. Deerfield is just firing on all cylinders right now and the kids are playing with their hair on fire. Best of luck to Vero Beach going forward.

The officiating was a Vero player ejection for allegedly throwing a punch, which sports writer said was not so, and 2 pass interference calls ,one  was a offensive , not sure if that would have made a difference anyway

The offensive PI call was legit. He pushed the Deerfield Beach Cornerback to gain separation. You can see it clear as day on the youtube broadcast.

There were plenty of calls going both ways.

Vero offense ain't anything Deerfield ain't seen i got Deerfield

That's not entirely true. Skill wise, Deerfield has seen similar or better offenses. (they completely shut down 4-star Bryan Robinson last week and held STA to their lowest point/yardage total of the season)

However, IMO Vero's offense is coached better than any offense Deerfield has seen this season and they do a great job of getting Dawson the ball in space. Deerfield better be ready to tackle.

Western has been thrashing their opponents with solid play on both sides of the ball. Offense is lighting it up with six running clocks and outscoring opponents 476-64. A few trash teams but impressive win against Palmetto and a 5-pt loss against a solid University School common opponent which clocked Columbus this year 35-0. Their defense has been lights out except for the STA game, recording 6 shutouts.

My Explorers on the other hand have had a solid season but performed well-below the initial hype in August. New coach, some lack of true leadership on the field, rare kicking woes (against Dillard in particular LOL!) and way too many penalties for an Explorer team. Starting QB hasn't progressed much if at all this year, new sophomore QB getting lots of reps because of it. Losses against BTW and U School are forgivable, but the blow outs in those games weren't.  Defense just quit. They've got the tools offensively, but D is really suspect this year.

I see an exciting, high scoring game, and I'm not counting my Explorers out. That said, I think if Western gets out early, it could get ugly. I seen us fold once that happened twice this season The defense better get ready to play 4 quarters.

    Prediction: 41-30, bad guys.

Western's defense actually played great versus STA. Only gave up 17 points I believe, and that was playing beside an offense that turned the ball over 7 times.

I don't see anybody scoring 30 points on their defense. This will be a much lower scoring game than 41-30 in my opinion.

  14. This game will come down to 2 things...

    1. Can Vero's defense keep Deerfield's loaded offense from scoring?

    2. Can Deerfield's defense contain Jermaine Dawson and Vero's well-oiled offense?

On Friday they held PBC's Bryan Robinson to 3 catches for roughly 17 yards and completely shut down Central's offense after their opening drive.

And with FIVE Power-5 recruits starting on Deerfield's offense it's always a difficult task to contain them for 4 whole quarters.

DB is firing on all cylinders right now. Vero looks very tough and well-coached though. It should be a good game.

I disagree I believe it was Chaminade regardless of the outcome that happen. Deerfield is obviously a worthy opponent but if vero prepare & handle jussi was like they did vs Chaminade I see 20-6 24-13 type win for vero

Chaminade doesn't have FIVE P5 skill kids starting on offense + TWO P5 skill kids on the bench. DB's BACK-UP Quarterback is D1, their back-up RB and a 2nd string WR.
