    From the Lakeland Ledger:

"FHSAA officials confirmed that 12 players from both Lakeland and Kathleen were suspended as a result of a fight that broke out at the beginning of the third quarter when the two teams met on Oct. 27.

Kathleen players sat out last week, while Lakeland players will miss Friday night's home playoff game against New Port Richey Mitchell in the Class 4S, Region 2 quarterfinals."

    . . .

"Polk County athletic director Dan Talbot said most of the suspensions were for one week, although a couple of players received two weeks suspension. The punishments were lighter than they could have been, he said, because the schools meted out their own punishments first."

Lakeland officials couldn't/wouldn't disclose what the punishment was because of "privacy laws."

    Still Fishy!!

Today I was called in the office and was basically told " we want the program to head in a different direction"  AKA your Fired!

I am not sure what direction that is?  When I came to Poinciana this was a 0-10, 1-9, 2-8 program with kids always getting in trouble, grades were poor on average. Since I took over the program we went 4-6 my 1st season, best record since 2000. Covid happened still went 3-6  all the while managing to keep a JV program, where other schools couldnt. my 3rd year was the trying one. We had player issues, had to remove all of our seniors and went 1-9. Last season on the back of that we rebooted and set every record in school history. From points scored, to wins in a season,  points against, Being the first head coach to ever stay there after the 3rd season. This year while being a little rocky we had our DC quit after week 2, other coaches stepped up and filled in the voids. We only went 4-6 this year also beating Liberty for the second year in a row, Something no other coach had done there. (we were also the first to beat Liberty). We also have raised the teams GPA to above a 3.0 and are keeping kids out of trouble. While Im not going to air out dirty laundry, because I could do a lot of that.  I will say that I feel the true reason i was let go was I refuse to be a puppet and just follow along with everything. I fight for the kids and what I feel is right.  I gave that school 9 years, planned on staying for a long time in the future. We see what loyalty has to do with things.

Sad in that it is an irrefutable fact you made true progress in a program that needed stability, leadership and true commitment.   During your tenure you can take solace knowing you gave the program all that and more.  We truly live in an upside-down world and this decision by the school administration is a head scratcher to say the least.  Things happen for a reason and I truly hope it leads to better things for you going forward.  Good Luck Coach, wishing you the best.

To answer the question on SOS + Win / Loss and the the reason Cocoa jumped Chaminade. IMO

Cocoa's Strength of schedule is 41.8 while Chaminade's strength of schedule is 32.6.

Chaminade's Opponents win loss record is 52 wins and 42 losses.

Cocoa's Opponents win loss record is 71 wins and 28 losses. Cocoa's opponents WIN to LOSS and SOS is greater than Chaminade's. No If and or buts about it. Cocoa played a tougher schedule, not just a couple of tough games but 7 tough games and more and a few one after another.

SOS is very important for judging a rank in any system.

In My Opinion these games Chaminade played and their SOS are what killed them in the ranking's.

#4130 Lakewood (St. Petersburg, FL) (57-0), #8459 Avant Garde Academy (Hollywood, FL) (64-0), #11776 St. John Paul II Academy (Boca Raton, FL) (69-0).

I'm Not sure winning or losing to STA had much to play into it. STA's SOS is 39 and their opponents win/loss record is 62 wins and 35 losses.

Cocoa's weakest SOS opponents were #1082 Titusville (FL) (28-3), #2117 Palm Bay (Melbourne, FL) (49-14), #8070 Astronaut (Titusville, FL) (63-0). Astronaut, Palm Bay and Titusville are district games and required. Rockledge was the weakest SOS non district team but a Rival game, known as the Bar-B-Que game.

    Hope this helps.

Happy for Cocoa and just to be clear, I don't have a dog in the hunt.  But how they did it on the FHSAA site only is clear as mud.  Every other ranking system nationally has CMD ranked higher than Cocoa and yes, on any given day........... Again, not a betting man but my money would be on Chaminade.   So NO, the explanation didn't help me.

I think the answer lies not in what Cocoa (or Chaminade) did in their last game, but what their 9 previous opponents did in their last game.  Cocoa's previous 9 opponents went 5-0 (with 4 idle), while Chaminade's previous 9 opponents went 1-3 (with 5 idle).  As a result, each of those winning teams improved their Rating, which in turn lifts their previous opponents' strength of schedule (in this case, Cocoa and Chaminade).  So I believe Cocoa's strength of schedule improved significantly enough (with respect to that of Chaminade) in the eyes of the computer algorithm to leapfrog Chaminade's previous standing.  Convoluted, I know.  At least with the previous RPI system, my hypothesis could be proven/disproven.

Thanks for the clarification with how the SOS improved, with the key words you used:  "In the Eyes of the Computer Algorithm".  That seems to conflict with the "Eyes of Ray", which apparently with the same record for the 9 previous opponents in their last game coincided with the "Eyes of MaxPrep".   What was it Darter called it?  Oh Yeah, FISHY!!

  5. 4 minutes ago, Perspective said:

You're spot on, Darter.   The question is this:  how did the FHSAA's proprietary formula know that Cocoa rightfully should have won that game against STA?  B)

Even if they had won, STA was Cocoa's toughest opponent in a very tough schedule.  But STA is no St. Francis or AHP or Central this year and CMD beat all of them so what Cocoa did in that last game to leapfrog them is the real question.

Chaminade has been for weeks the #1 overall seed regardless of class.  If you look at the new rankings in the FHSAA website, they were leapfrogged today by Cocoa as the new #1 seed overall regardless of classification, moving CMD to #2.  Happy for Cocoa although in a head-to-head I would have to put my money on Chaminade.

How that happened?  Something in the FHSAA recipe that doesn't exist in the MaxPrep recipe because as of today CMD is still the #1 ranked team in our state overall (excluding IMG) and #2 in the entire nation behind only Bishop Gorman.           GO FIGURE!!

If they were not cheated at Brian Piccolo, they would be 10-0. Instead they lost by a point as St. Thomas got several seconds of free time to get into field goal range and win. St. Thomas also had uncalled penalties near the end of their final drive, I believe.

Not sure how Chaminade factors in this.

Darter/Ray, here's my prediction:  in the not-too-distant future, one of the private schools (STA, CCC, Jesuit, Berkeley, Columbus, etc.) is going to end up on the outside of the top 8 in their region or end up having to play on the road against a team that's seeded higher than they are, but shouldn't be (in their minds).   At that point, the second-string guard's father, who works for a downtown law firm, will agree to take on the case at little or no expense to the school.  They'll start with a public records request, but likely will have to file a lawsuit when the FHSAA stonewalls them.  It won't do the school any good, as the playoffs will long since be over with by the time the matter gets resolved.  And to further complicate matters, the FHSAA may decide, at that point, to implement a new rankings system in an effort to make the matter moot.

    Just a hunch.

Dang, sounds like lawyers pulling legal tricks regardless of merit, facts, public interest, good cause, etc... DANG!!

Indeed!  Although in my experience, lawyers like to do things like this on behalf of people or entities called "clients."  And the lawyers really like to have clients that are willing to pay for their services.   :P

Touche!!  But they also do work Pro bono for a good cause, which it appears to be by the interest we all have on this subject.  :D

Does anyone have an update on this?  I haven't see anything since this story first broke.  Is it just being swept under the Polk rug?

I did see an online article in the Ledger the day after the game suggesting that there were no ejections, ostensibly because the game officials made the decision to simply end the game and not punish any of the wrong-doers.  I never knew this was an option.   If so, I guess the key to getting into a huge brawl is to make sure that you're up big and that you can convince the refs to simply call the game before they assess any penalties or eject any players or coaches.

The same article had a quote that I thought was pretty fun.  Essentially the Lakeland coach made mention of the dozen or so players who left the sidelines to run across the field towards the melee and suggested that they were all headed over to "help break up the fight."  How noble of them.

What about it DARTER, doesn't this smell FISHY??

Couple interesting matchups in the same region: Treasure Coast hosts Kiss Osceola (not what a #1 seed would want), & Vero travels to Palm Bay Heritage who have had a great season…….

Treasure Coast should be thrilled as based on the final rankings by FHSAA they could have had either Martin County or Viera instead of us as they both were ranked higher in the final poll.  Not for us winning the district it would not be us, so should be an easy outing for them at home. :D

  12. We were trailing 10-7 at halftime and the OL with power running took over in the second half for two long, time consuming drives for TD's.  As I previously mentioned we intentionally held Swint out as well as Sinophant the second string RB and relied on the other two young guys to just gut it out which they did fighting and scrapping for every yard to get the job done.  Not sure of the stat line, but we probably gained 200 yards rushing, most of it in the second half.  If we can find a way to get 3 scores, we have a chance as our defense is not giving up 40+points like I have seen with several of the top ranked teams headed into the playoffs.  In any region, a #1 seed vs #8 seed usually is a lopsided game.  We shall see.

  13. Despite holding out 2 starting OL, our all state RB and a few other key players to have them available next week in the playoffs our running attack in the second half wore down West Orange for a grind it out win.  As usual the defense played lights out with 3 INT's and completely shut out any ground game they attempted.  Big win to provide us a small boost heading into the playoffs next week.  Looks likely we will be headed to Treasure Coast next week.  Look forward to the challenge.  GO KOWBOYS!!

Martin County is our furthest district game its about an hour away same as Osceola County.....I remember two years ago Sebastien River traveled to Dwyer for a district game......

Don't know what maps you use, but Martin County HS is about 40 miles from Vero Beach HS, whereas it is over 80 from Vero to Kissimmee.  Nowhere near the same when you double the distance as you do have to return home.  Vero Beach is relatively close to the Osceola county line, but not much population there and we have a large county so a long hike to reach our HS.

  15. Interesting article in sports section in today's Orlando Sentinel by Buddy Collins regarding the FHSAA brain trust looking at ideas for re-classification for next year.  Here it is for anyone interested in reading it.  By the way, the INFO is FREE!!:D                                                      iVarsity Weekly: New twist on FHSAA Open division talk; playoffs heat up (orlandosentinel.com)

It's the same distance, only difference is when you travel on turnpike to Osceola, you get woods until all of a sudden you see Kissimmee in the distance

Not quite the same, 30 additional miles each way from Kissimmee to Vero as opposed to Melbourne.  Then miles ramp up even more to Ft. Pierce, Port St. Lucie and Stuart (Martin Co.).
