All this just seams WAY to complicated to me and talk about a nightmare to manage. WOW you think the FHSAA has complaints now just wait and see how this turns out.

I agree with Tigerfan1 roster size is up to schools hiring the right coaches to get the players to come out. There are 1A schools less than 250 total students having to play 1A schools with 600 students as it is. I don't think any changes need to made until we see how the new school choice legislation shakes up the balance of power in all classes.

    Mr. Wilson,

I have emailed with Mr. Beasley as well and I do understand where this is coming from.
I would also point that the first go around for the proposed system, I basically proved why the system wouldn't work as 0-10 Creekside would have made the playoffs. While this system is obviously better than the first proposed system, pardon me if I willing to question things when some simple math proved how bad the system would be.

But some issues still remain as they try and sell this:
They are selling this as it "rewards playing a tough schedule" Two questions come to mind, 1) How does the current system punish you for playing a tough schedule? and 2) How do you define a tough schedule?
My example would be Apopka from 2014. They entered 8A playoffs as a 6-4 district runner-up. They win the state championship. Now all of their losses were against 7-3 teams or better, so they weren't losing to scrubs. At the same time, I doubt they could be in the playoffs with a 6-4 record in 8A under the new system.

Second, how does one define a tough schedule. Teams rise and fall all the time. In the Jacksonville area, both First Coast and Ed White were a lot worse than people would expected this year and as a result would have been a drain on your schedule. How is that fair the the kids? They don't control who is willing to play them or how good their opponents are. I look at Santa Fe a couple of years ago. They were on a tear beating teams then their QB becomes out for the season and the team looks average. I look at a school like Hamilton County who plays in the 1A state championship game in 2014 and then goes 4-6 in 2015.
Third, County ADs are going to use this as a way to take control of schedules. Look at Duval County again. Until recently, no schools played outside of the Gateway Conference for out of district games. If you think County ADs in big metro areas are going to allow tons of cross-state games because of this, then you have never talked to one of these ADs. They care about saving money. So don't expect a school like Raines to be playing Mainland for example. (Yes, I know Raines and First Coast played out of county the past two years, but only because Superintendent worked in Miami-Dade.) Look to St Johns County, Creekside went 0-10 last year, who wants that team on their schedule? At no point will Bartram, Nease, Ponte Vedra, or St. Augustine drop them though, it is a gate game and cheap travel game. Does that game hurt playoffs chances even with a win? Yup.

So yes, of course, County ADs love this. They see cost savings. Of course, coaches love this. They don't have to schedule powerhouse schools so they can pump up that win %. Are fans going to love this? Nope, way too confusing to figure out. The fact that a team can go from being #1 seed to being a #4 because an opponent from week 1 loses a game is to me something fans will not enjoy.

Do I understand the need for a system that does avoids 50-0 blowouts? Sure do. I understand it in terms of money (nobody shows up to that game). I understand it terms of competition (Winning and Losing Coaches hate those games). I understand it terms of player safety (2nd teamers lighting up overly tired 1st teamers). I just think that promotion/relegation is easier to do without changing the simple system of winners/runner-ups.

These are the list of the positives about the new schedule from the powerpoint... Schools control their own schedule (Agreed)
Schools can do what best fits their athletes (Agreed)
No more complaining about district placement (Ummm... you still will hear complaints about every other sport, and this sounds like a situation where you guys are just forced to work harder)
School districts or areas can create their own conferences (They can do that know with out of district games)
Schools and/or Districts can control Travel (This is just a repeat of Point #1)
Creates excitement that is now missing (This is an opinion)
Counts week 11 (It counts now, it just doens't count for playoff purposes, and for the most part neither does week 1 or 2 for most schools. While it is a true argument, it is a stupid argument).
The best teams will get in (No they won't because people will figure out how to game the system like they always do. BTW Region 1, Class 7A 7 out the 8 teams in the new simulation were already playoff teams, so it's not like good teams were held out).
Week 11 press conference announcing matchups (Really?!?!?! Somebody will open a newspaper or go to a website to see it. What will actually happen is that most teams will move their bye to Week 11 so they know the end results).
The seeding will create a more exciting playoff system (Opinion, but seeding would be better overall, but not much. Look to Region 4, Class 7A. Dwyer played STA in Round 2. If they had been seeded #1 and #2, it would be Round 3. Not much of a difference.)
Creates more self-policing (Not even sure what this means, but if it is regards to scheduling you already said that)
Tough schedules will be rewarded (How are they punished now? If you set-up a Murder's Row of Plant, Armwood, Apopka, Bolles, Trinity Christian, STA, and IMG as your schedule, are you punished?)

I have already talked against this policy and still think it is idiotic and overly complicated. The current system works. You win your district you move on.
There is more incentive now to play a "winning" team to toughen up your schedule.
Why would say Columbia play Bolles or Trinity Christian under the new system? If they lose they gain nothing, if they win, they gain little. So why bother?
If you want to fix the system, allow for relegation and promotion. If you qualify for playoffs 100 students added to your population, 75 for additional every round. (only 10% of that for 1A-3A). Most 400 from one season and 800 if you go back to back.

Negative 50 for every season you don't qualify for the playoffs (so if you haven't made in 19 seasons (looking at your Forest Hills (West Palm Beach)). We start with 2316 subtract 1(9 *50) and end up with 1366 where they play Suncoast, Fort Pierce Westwood, and Port St. Lucie instead of Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens), Olympic Heights (Boca Raton), Palm Beach Lakes (West Palm Beach), Royal Palm Beach, West Boca Raton.
No more than a 1000 students can be subtracted.

I'm in the South Florida Area...and can't call nobody pockets but I highly doubt the family's down here can afford to spend 25K a year on a private school education as well.  It's all about positioning.  It should be about putting your kid in the best possible position to play and get an education with the hopes of him moving on to play at the next level and most importantly getting a degree.  If a coach is building a program, and not a team...transfers don't mean anything just creates opportunity for someone to step up or someone else to transfer in..lol  #next man up

@Mighty_Dillard_Panthers I think Dillard people just don't come together. I'mma use Northwestern as an example. Northwestern always show out when they do something or win something. For their 60th celebration Northwestern did a church service at New Birth and throughout the whole church all you saw was blue and gold. Football from 2006-2008 the bulls brought tons of people to Orlando and I believe about 5,000 people went with them to Texas when they played Carroll. Other instances still with football were the Orange Bowl and Soul Bowl days. I remembered Northwestern playing Central and Northwestern side was packed. Central was deep as well but not like Northwestern. I never attended any of the classic 90's games, but against Jackson you talking about record numbers 0f 20,000 and up. One year 47,000 people showed up. Now obviously not all Northwestern but half of that is darn good. I'm always browsing around being nosy and on different alumni sites you'll see comments saying as much as I hate or we hate are rival Northwestern they're always on point and don't play. I personally think Northwestern does so well because there alumni and community actually wanna do things and they have the right people in place. Who's your alumni president, do you go to the alumni meetings, do you pay your annual dues, does the alumni do alumni activities like dances, beach parties, tailgating and showing up to football games and so fourth. If none of these things are done or some why not you voice your opinion and get something started or help our what's already started.

FHSAA has nothing to do with a coaches salary, That is at the school board level and or the administration level. You are correct that it takes more than just a head coach, They need quality help from asst coaches to administrators and a high level booster club to raise extra money for equipment is always a good thing.

    Spring Football 2016
    Class 3A

Spring football is a rite of passage in Florida where reporters, fans, family, coaches and players can evaluate where a program is likely heading going into Fall. I, for one, have never put to much stock into Spring games- some of the best teams in Fall lose their Spring game, and some teams that win by 70 in Spring can't reproduce those results in Fall; however, if we take Spring for what it is- 20 days of practice and a glorified scrimmage we can enjoy its subtle nuances.

Class 3A is going to be different this year- for the first time in recent memory, I believe there will be a legitimate challenger to Jacksonville Trinity Christian's throne. The off-season in 3A has been plastered with the rise of Chaminade-Madonna and there 16 division 1 offered athletes. There's also been much Bru-ha-ha made about Tampa Catholic fielding a team that has extremely high expectations with a healthy senior class and a load of division 1 athletes, TC made national news when it was announced they would be flying up to New Jersey to play national powerhouse Bergen Catholic.

So, the question remains- who are the contenders and who are the pretenders to still be playing late November?  Here's some general thoughts on 3A going into Spring.

    1) Can Jacksonville Trinity Christian 4-Peat?  It's hard to win a state-championship in Florida, but can you imagine the pressure to win 4 in a row? Trinity has been the flag bearer for small school excellence for quite awhile and I have every expectation this will remain the same this year. Outside of Tampa Catholic, the North of 3A is rebuilding. Trinity will need to rework major parts of their offense as they've put together a highly competitive schedule that includes Ribault, IMG, Cocoa, Pine Forrest and Godby.  The defense is expected, as usual, to lead the way.

    2) Chaminade-Madonna, already a national Super-Duper-Power? -  It's amazing how quickly things change in Florida. Just two seasons ago Chaminade-Madonna was the poster child for 1-9 teams making the playoffs while 7-3 teams didn't.  Now? The Lions feature a plethora of playmakers, defensive prowess and the class 4A Player of the year QB Henry Columbi who transferred in from Uschool.  Chaminade, wisely realizing that they play in the South of 3A which will feature no less than 4 teams in Maxpreps national small school rankings, is playing up most of the season to prepare them for a long playoff haul.

    3) Oxbridge Academy has finally arrived- this time last year, most reporters were crowning Oxbridge as the De Facto 3A team. I still had them behind American Heritage Delray, but this year? I think Oxbridge has finally arrived and they've built a schedule that's comparable to IMG's schedule. Oxbridge will be playing a bevy of 8A schools throughout the year. Oxbridge, similar to Chaminade already knows 3A South is a gauntlet and they're preparing accordingly.

    4) Any Dark horses?  Oxbridge/Chaminade/JaxTCA/CCC  are going to be talked about in Class 3A as the 4 top teams; however, are there any teams that could spoil the party? Looking around the state this year, 3A is going to be very top heavy.  I think Tampa Catholic and American Heritage Delray can play the spoiler roll. Heritage is in a position where, for the first time in, maybe ever, they go into the season as a clear and convincing underdog. Tampa Catholic has the talent and expertise to make another long playoff run as well.  Berkeley Prep is expected to have a strong/competitive football team this year and there is some hype around Winter Park Trinity Prep and Lakeland Christian.  If you're looking for a dark horse for 2016, Tampa Catholic would be it.

    5) Ocala Trinity Catholic- up or down? The Celtics aren't used to experiencing many 4 win seasons; however, the schedule was unmerciful last year as the Celtics played a highly competitive schedule in 2015. 2016 should see the Celtics starting to resemble their old selves a bit more. The talent and coaching is there, but the 2015 version was young and immature by most accounts. This year, I think it's safe to say they'll be more competitive and I'm thinking, be a 2nd round playoff team this year.

Who has the toughest and easiest route to the Championship game?

Without question, Chaminade-Madonna has the toughest route to Daytona Beach. If you go by expectations and popular opinion, this is what Chaminade is most likely looking at to get to Orlando.

    Week 10: @ Flanagan
    Week 11: IMG
Rd 1:  Vs American Heritage Delray
    Rd 2: Vs Oxbridge
    Rd 3: @ CCC

That is the very definition of crazy. That CCC game, would come at the worst possible time considering CCC has a senior loaded roster that will feature 12-15 division 1 athletes of their own and that's before they get their expected transfers in June. But, even to get to Clearwater there's heavy resistance- Oxbridge is loaded, American Heritage will end up being loaded, IMG is IMG and Flanagan despite having some transfers out- is still the defending 8A State Champions. If Chaminade does get to Daytona or win it, they'll have earned it.

Ironically, the easiest route to the Championship game is most likely Jacksonville Trinity Christian.

Jacksonville Trinity is in a unique situation that they stand a a great chance of hosting all 3 playoff games in the North. I don't expect rounds 1 and 2 to be trouble at all as the teams in Region 1 are rebuilding.  That would leave JaxTCA with a  home game against Tampa Catholic and/or LCS/Berkeley Prep/Trinity Prep. JaxTCA will be heavy favorites at home against any of those teams.

Those are my thoughts for now- keep in mind, it's APRIL. Teams will get transfers in, out..those who transferred out will come back if others transfer in and vice versa. But, as Spring goes- there's enough story lines to keep people interested in small school football!

Central has also won 4 straight state titles. If not for a forfeited season it'd be 6 in a row, as they won it all in 2010 and forfeited their 2011 title.
Trinity Christian has also now won 3 straight titles in 3A.
