I don't know. The way that Buchholz handled Dunnellon, Bolles, Bartram Trail, and Nease, especially blowing out Dunnellon 35-0 in Dunnellon's stadium, I would say that Buchholz is going to be a handful for STA. That being said, I shook my head when STA totally obliterated Homestead 56-7. Is STA that good as they also defeated one of the top 5 teams in the country St. Francis.

STA gets better as the season goes... They're very good.

  4. I will agree that Dade has a ton of talent, but I also believe that some of them athletes put in the effort and do what it takes to get out of their 'sometimes' desperate situations. College scholarships are just one way to do that, and we all know that you have to earn that education one way or another. There are a ton of talented kids out there that just do enough to get that starting position, and then there are the ones that do enough and more... you know em, they are the ones that go to the big colleges and excel. That's why Dade is heavily recruited by all colleges.

Does it surprise you that Mac Jones played for Bolles? A shame Corky Rogers passed away before seeing Mac killing it in the NFL.

Especially in the playoffs this holds true.  A few years ago we lost in the first round to Steinbrenner at our place, I think when we were favored by 2-3 TD.  Months ago I pointed out that last year we won 2 games we probably should have lost (Sarasota Riverview & Palmetto) to reach the finals.  I predicted that it would lead to unrealistic expectations this year, although we strive to go to state every year.  In fact, even after losing twice to West Orange this year, I truly believe we had the better team.  You not only need talent and coaching, but also a few breaks or balls to bounce your way.  Maybe the "Gods" will be looking over us next year.

A ball bouncing the right way can go along way in turning a team from behind to ahead. Once momentum has shifted the game changes.

Apopka played an extremely tough schedule and the most points they gave up in any game was 20 vs Lakeland at Lakeland with a penalty aided winning drive by the Dreadnaughts; could have easily been only 14 points.  In addition, they shutout 4 teams and gave up only a field goal or two in 4 other games against playoff teams like Lake Brantley, Creekside, West Orange and Bartram Trail.  They are very good defensively needless to say as they gave up 20 points against an explosive Seminole team in regulation.  Something will have to give as the Titans running attack plays into Apopka's strength of stopping the run.  I'm going with the Darters.

Treasure Coast has that 2 headed snake in running backs. Both are capable of running through tackles. Then you have that occasional slant and screen to loosen the line up a little. Of course the Darters have been to the playoffs so often you know the coaches have seen it all and they make great adjustments in the second half.

In my humble opinion it will be close and could go either way. Good luck to both teams and may the playoffs be injury free.

Did you play for a certain coach who changed jobs and moved to the county north of your school a few years back?

To answer your question, I believe I know the coach  in reference. Nothing but respect for that coach.

I graduated HS in 71, and after college I worked for Florida Today/USA Today until 2012. All but a few of my coaches have passed on. Blackburn for Wrestling 4 years (1968 - 1971), Higgenbotham for football Freshman year (1968), Miller for swimming 3 years (1969 - 1971), My Dad and Mckee for Baseball (1960 - 1969).

However, I coached league Baseball, Jr-Sr's from 1998 - 2021. I'm fairly certain this year was my last year coaching after nearly dying from a nasty illness that hit Florida fairly hard. I may continue to umpire if the league needs me though.

I respectfully disagree.   Within each class, there are four regions.   Those regions were set up before the season began and there was no deviation when the playoffs started.    In other words, you didn't have teams from one of the four districts in Region 2 competing in the Region 1 playoffs, the Region 3 playoffs or the Region 4 playoffs and vice versa.  For each class, all the teams in Region 1 came from the four districts in Region 1.   And all eight of the teams within Region 1 competed for the Regional championship, which would give them one of the four semifinal spots in that class.   All the teams in Region 2 competed for the Region 2 title and one of four spots in the semis.  Same for Regions 3 and 4.

During regional play, geography and RPI work together.  Only the teams in Region 1 compete in the Regional 1 playoffs - the four district winners (seeded one through four based on their RPI's as of the end of the season) and the four "wildcard" teams (i.e., the top four teams - based on RPI - from all of the other teams in the four districts within that particular region that didn't win a district title).

Come Saturday morning, there will be a four regional champs for each classification.   At that point, you essentially reshuffle the deck.  You take the four regional winners and you compare their respective RPI's (as of the end of the regular season) to determine their respective seeding.   Then, regardless of the number of the region and regardless of geography, No. 1 seed hosts the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed hosts the No. 3 seed.  The two winners then play each other in the state finals for that class.

In my opinion, the brackets that appear on the FHSAA website should not make any references to Winner G25 vs. Winner G26 and Winner G27 vs. Winner G28, because that's not how it's going to work.  Instead, for the semifinal teams, it should list a No. 1 seed, a No. 2 seed, a No. 3 seed and a No. 4 seed and for each one, it should say "TBD" until the four regional winners have been determined.   Otherwise, people are going to see what's in the brackets on the website and reach the same conclusion that many have reached.

Again, I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

Just seems like the final would have a North region vs a South region but, I do see why they would use RPI seeds for the final 4 instead of using the North vs brackets. To insure the best 2 teams face off for the finals and not a team that slid through easier brackets.

Thanks for sheading the light so that I could see it better. It took me awhile because I couldn't get past the way it used to be, North vs South. At the start I just couldn't see past 2 teams from the South playing for the championship... or 2 from the North but, it makes sense the way they set it up.

Thanks Perspective.  Sometimes my mind wanders and I do stuff like this to focus just for fun.

I agree that it really is impossible to answer my question unless you have something to compare it to.  By comparison what, makes Team A worthy to occupy a playoff slot over the other teams?  The only fair way to do this is by results on the field.  I agree that there is no way to do this fairly as there's not enough time in the world for each team to play another which would IN FACT be the closest indicator of who is better.

I also agree regarding the seeding aspect.  If teams are seeded according to strength of schedule, W/L etc, etc, it would be plausible to think that No. 1 seeds would end up playing No. 2 seeds across the board with the No. 1's coming out on top.  Any deviation from that assumption shows a potential flaw in the system which should be analyzed.  This is evidenced just by looking at the upcoming round 3 games.  The mere fact that entering the 3rd round where are 64 teams remaining, If seeding truly indicated the winner of the games then there should only be No. 1's playing at this point.  Looking as illustrated above, only 28 1's have made it this far.  What does that mean?  Probably nothing.  Then again, probably a lot.  It certainly opens to the door to re-examine the playoff selection process.

That's why they play the game, LOL.  However, this does make for interesting conversation and speculation for years to come.

The flaw isn't necessarily in they system if 1's don't play 1's for all the donuts. Team problems happen more frequently in big games. Players get hurt. Team matchup's. Ref's. Weather. Travel time. Lots of variables can cause the better team to lose or a bad team to squeak out a win.

For what it's worth, I reached out to the FHSAA and asked which controls for the semifinal games -- the online brackets or the reseeding based on RPI.   I got back a response that made no mention of the brackets.  Instead, it simply confirmed as follows:

4.7.2.3.2 State Semifinals (a) Dates and Times. See the football webpage at FHSAA.com.

    (b) Bracketing. Teams will be seeded based on the RPI Ranking at the conclusion of the regular season.

The one (1) seed will play the four (4) seed and the two (2) seed will play the three (3) seed.

    (c) Host Schools. Teams with the highest regular season RPI Ranking will be designated “home” team

I'm not saying I'm 100% right on this one, but I'm sure not going to say I'm wrong.  B)

    (b) Bracketing. Teams will be seeded based on the RPI Ranking at the conclusion of the regular season.

It kind of says it all right there.

  11. Looking forward to the Bar-b-que bowl this year. Hope the level of officiating matches the level of talent that is going to be on the field this year. My son graduated from Cocoa and my grandson is graduating from Rockledge this year. I went to both schools so it will be whimsical for me.

First game was played in 1971. Lately it has been a great game.
