after losing their koc last week, AHD had another long bus ride home with 50 more points on their shoulders.
next week they go on the road to DC against a tough St. John's.
Early season character test for AHD.

I don't think Oxbridge beating Flanagan 7-6 in a lightening delayed game is a surprise. Oxbridge is a top 5 team in 3A and ranked the #2 Small School in America. As Broward pointed out, this is a team that has a realistic shot at being a state team in a region that is loaded with 3 of the top 15 Small Schools in America (Per MaxPreps). I think the score that sent up a red flag with me is Naples 50- American Heritage Delray 17.   Naples is really good, but American Heritage is ranked #2 in 3A (I had them ranked #3).

I understand teams struggling in some aspects of a game week 1, maybe the defense isn't quite right or the offense is making to many mistakes- but I didn't expect a super talented AHD team to have 50 dropped on them. To me, that's a huge shocker.

Game had a couple heavy downpours roll through and had a lightning delay which led to a very close, smash-mouth style, sloppy game. Both teams had a few turnovers.   Oxbridge struck long early and went fairly conservative after that.  The Oxbridge Defense was good enough to contain Flanagan in the red zone.  Oxbridge OL and DL stood out and their Defense overall was pretty stout.  Flanagan looked about like I expected - a "B" version of last years team.

Good observations Broward. It's a process for Chaminade- for lack of a better phrase, this is the first time these guys have played together. They didn't play a Spring game and had a last second coaching change. All in all, this was a good night for the Lions.  They still have a plethora of talent and I think even though they didn't break through, proved they earned their top 5 ranking in the AP Poll.

It's going to be an exciting season for the Lions. That game against Cardinal Gibbons will be huge, but the Lions should make great progress and then we'll get to see how far they've come as a team when they travel to Flanagan.

Welcome to the board HSFBfan!  Tampa Catholic has been covered quite a bit in many posts here (mostly by myself and a few others) that deals with 3A Football. I haven't posted my Class 3A Preview yet, but I personally have Tampa Catholic ranked #5 in 3A.  I believe Maxpreps has them ranked in the top 40 Florida High Schools for all classes.

Last year Tampa Catholic finished 10-3 in the Final 4 of Class 3A and was an offensive powerhouse. They return a bulk of their team including star QB Austin Sessums, Toledo commits WR/DB Darius Corbett and Bentlee Sanders. The Crusaders also feature one of the better running backs in America, Devan Barrett who committed to Auburn and had 40+ offers. The Crusaders were the highest scoring team in the Tampa Bay area last year at just under 40ppg and have been bolstered by transfers this off season. Tampa Catholic also has a strong coaching staff with serious NFL ties-  David Lewis, Richard Wood, Jeris McIntyre. They also have big name high school coaches in Dan Mancuso and Mike Fenton. It's also not uncommon to see guys like Kenny Kelly, Darrell Jackson and Quincy Hipps show up on campus and help the team out either.

The issue with Tampa Catholic has never been their talent- they often feature teams with an impressive amount of talent; however, they rarely show up for big games. Case and point, their biggest rival is Tampa Jesuit, a Class 5A all boys school. It's a rivalry that gets national attention when the week pops up; however, Jesuit has won the past 17 in a row since 1999. Their second biggest rival is Clearwater Central Catholic, whom they're only 4-15 against in 1999.

As for the general census of the game. Bergen Catholic is going to go into this one as a 2+ TD favorite based on nothing more than depth. Tampa Catholic has added some pieces via transfers over the past few weeks, but their entire roster (including JV) sits around 50. That's actually a slightly above average roster size for 3A this year (JaxTCA withstanding).

In essence, Tampa Catholic is a very strong 3A Florida high school football team that will field a respectable team. They're expected to be a state team- meaning, a team that makes the final 4; however, they're clearly trying to punch above their weight class in this one as Bergen Catholic has the ability to take away most of the Crusader weapons outside of Devan Barrett, and I don't think one guy can beat BC.

Figured I'd chime in on this one. I'm assuming all of these games are on a neutral field in the middle of the state without any travel advantages either way and everyone is 100% healthy.

BTW vs Trinity Christian  tough matchup to predict since there would be so many athletes and championships on the field. Still, I'll take DJ Mathews, Shaun Wade and more importantly, Coach Dorminey's game plan over strong BTW squad 17-14

Bolles vs Oxbridge- based on the current rosters and staff, I would give Bolles the edge in a game of field position.  21-17

Chaminade vs Glades Central-  For every athlete Glades Central has, Chaminade can match and still have room to spare. Shaun Shivers, Xavier Williams, Josh Ali, Cody Watson, Chaminade 38. Glades Central 27

Cocoa vs American Heritage- This years Cocoa team is going to be very strong; however, American Heritage has quietly rebuilt their roster via transfers. Personally, I think this is the 2nd most interesting game of the bunch, but Cocoa used to play AHD and always found a way to hold on for the win- so I'd go Cocoa 21, AHD 14.

Raines vs Tampa Catholic-  Raines is a strong program, but this isn't their best team in 2016. Tampa Catholic has quietly come on VERY strong in the past few weeks with last second transfers into the program. They also have Devan Barrett one of the top running backs in all the land and a NFL laden coaching staff that has these kids working overtime to prep for Bergen Catholic. Tampa Catholic 24, Raines 14.

Dunnellon vs CCC-  Dunnellon has come a very long way since their 6-4 days of 2014 and the 2016 version could be the best team in years; however, CCC has been a traditional small school powerhouse for years. Teams are similar in size, but CCC has speed and more importantly CJ Cotman who would be the difference. CCC 31, Dunnellon 17

Some of the teams in 3A mentioned in this article are silly..

Chaminade-Madonna has 18 players with a division 1 offer on their roster right now. By the time the current 4 year cycle finishes, we may come to find that the roster they're supporting in 2016 has upwards of 25 or 26 players that play college football at any level. Anybody who thinks the Lions are being slept on has tunnel vision, lives under a rock or is trolling the internet- they've been the most discussed team in 3A, moreso than JaxTCA.

CCC? Really? Nobody is sleeping on the Marauders- heck, multiple newspapers have painted them as going toe-to-toe with JaxTCA. As of Dilan Scargles Valpariso offer, they're up to 15 guys on the roster that have at least 1 Division 1 offer.  This is a senior laden team that has played together for 3 or 4 years. They've also added one of the top offensive linemen in the country to a line that already had a plethora of experience. This is another team that has upwards of 25 players that will play college football this cycle.

If you take the best 6 teams in 3A (JaxTCA, CCC, Chaminade, AHD, Oxbridge, Tampa Catholic) out of the picture. I think Taylor County is a great mention and I think another strong team being slept on is Holy Trinity with Jashuan Corbin.

Great question-  I generally define a sleeper team as a team that has the talent and ability to do better than where they're predicted to finish.  So- to me, to consider OTC a sleeper team you have to look at their roster, coaching and take into consideration the teams in their district and region. This is what's great about this message board, everybody has opinions about where teams will end up.

I personally consider OTC a potential-sleeper, meaning, I think First Academy is a little bit better than OTC (Think a TD or less) and Tampa Catholic is 2 TD's better than OTC. If OTC loses to 1st Academy in the season, they'll travel to Tampa Catholic in round 1. If OTC beats First Academy I think they're a sleeper team as I think OTC has the horses to win at home in rd 1 vs Berkeley Prep or LCS. In essense, I think OTC is better than last year- actually, they maybe a candidate for most-improved 3A team; however, the teams they play are loaded and Tampa Catholic/1st Academy loaded up in the off-season and feature some of the top players in the US.

I'm aware that the Chaminade players decided to transfer back into Chaminade after the financial aid situation was fixed.

So, now the question is- What to do with them. I'm aware that Damon Jones, Coach Laine and Coach Columbi are excellent coaches, but this was really Jason Milgrom team.

I think Chaminade jumps back into the 4 spot, but the 3 programs above them are more stable now.

I think Chaminade even with the new coach is better than Oxbridge and Tampa Catholic.

I'll mull it over for a bit. I gotta check to see if CCC landed the Presley kid.

This is a hard time to do a top 10 in Class 3A because of the moving parts right now. I feel 100% confident in my top 3 though.

    1) Jacksonville Trinity- They're #1 until somebody beats them.
    2) Clearwater Central Catholic - Team that benefits the most from Chaminade's fall.
    3) American Heritage Delray - Not as talented as years past Stallions, but Alec Sincfield and a strong defense get them in the top 3.

After the top 3, we have to see how many players end up transferring out of Chaminade. They lost Shaun Shivers, Xavier Williams and Keondra White and that star Sr safety (can't recall his name)- most importantly, they lost Coach Milgrom and most importantly, community support. Shivers was really the soul of that program. I don't believe that knocks them out of the top 10, but it does knock them out of the top 5 right now. How far out of the top 5 will be determined over the coming weeks.

If I had to rank 4-10 right now based on what I know...

    4) Tampa Catholic
    5) Orlando First Academy
    6) Oxbridge Academy
    7) Chaminade-Madonna
    8) Tampa Berkeley Prep
    9) Ocala Trinity
    10) Lakeland Christian

Again, we have to see where the pieces fall; however, as of July 31st if I had to give a top 10- I'd go with this.
