The fact that Merritt Island can make a final is a travesty. it’s a black eye and stain on the FHSAA. Teams like this should be getting booted out in the 1st and 2nd round of a real playoff. Not playing freaking Sebring for the right to make state. The classes are WAAAAAAYYYYY too watered down. We need to consolidate and do it now!!!

Baker wasn't any better. The thing is 5A is Miami Central, AHP a distant 2nd, and a bunch of average at best teams.

I predicted 5A-9 was a terrible district yet got *four* teams into the playoff and they collectively went 1-3 in round one, with the sole win a 24-21 over a 3-7 Tampa Chamberlain team by 7-3 Nature Coast Tech.  There were much stronger teams (e.g. 5-4 Port Charlotte) that didnt make it into the 5A playoffs because the RPI formula favors districts in weak geographic regions.  The RPI kept out a lot of good teams that played hard schedules but had close losses to power teams while rewarding those who played weaker schedules but piled up wins

I've thought about this and I think a better solution is to have more districts, keep the RPI, but limit districts to no more than 2 teams.  You could also make an exception to this rule by taking a third team from a district in the rare instance they are 0.1+ higher RPI than a second place team in another district, thus having a provision to account for the extremely strong districts that might occur.

Region 3 class 5A is weak. Not a bit surprised Sebring is regional champs.

Madison County dressing 59 players doesn't really surprise me.  Seriously, what else is there for a teenage boy to do in Madison County, other than play football or work on the farm?  And given a choice between the two, which would you guys pick?  B)

Sounds like Hardee County. Even when we were winning we never had more than 50.

Just curious, when it came time to pick the wildcard teams, how did they determine whether a 6-3 team from one district was better or worse than a 6-3 team from another district?

If the 2 teams played one another the winner got the wildcard spot. Otherwise it was done by total wins of opponents. See reply to @muckboy561

Didn't they play like a tiebreaker game  to determine the wildcards right? It been so long I forgot lol

Nope. Best w/l record. In case of 2 teams with identical records the tiebreaker was determined by either head-to-head match up if there was one or total wins of opponents played.  Example: Hardee & Haines City were both 7-3 that year. Since we didn't play each other and the combined wins of Haines City's opponents was more they got in.

  7. Who remembers the 1999 & 2000 seasons?  Those two seasons there were only 3 Districts per region instead of 4.  Districts had more teams, usually 7.  District champs & runner-ups both got in the playoffs and two at large wildcard spots were reserved for the two teams with the best w/l record.   I don't remember any teams with losing seasons getting in the playoffs and a few of the wildcard teams went deep in the playoffs those years.
