  1. Another one I've come across is this Randazzo School in Coconut Creek. They have teams like Village Academy, Hialeah Miami Lakes, Reagan, Seminole Ridge on their schedule. But they also have Eastland Christian which doesn't play 11 man. And they have Highlands Christian which dropped 11 man football years ago.

I've also seen Hollywood Christian on a few schedules and they also dropped 11 man a few years ago.

    Very confusing.

  2. Gatorman-UF,

Thanks. And you are correct. The lower the number, the more evenly matched the teams are. As far as the FHSAA is concerned, I would be more than willing to provide them rankings, for football or any other sport for that matter. My system works extremely well for games like basketball and baseball because of the amount of games that are played each season. More data = More Accuracy.

Anyway, I guess they know how to find me if the need ever arises.

  3. Using the past 20 seasons of data, here is a mathematical projection of the 2019 season. It should be noted, this data is based on past performance and does not take coaching changes, returning players, etc. into consideration. And though entertaining,  I would certainly not take it to the bank. After all, you wouldn't play the stock market based entirely on historic data.

The first analysis is Classification Strength. This ranking is a weighted moving average combining team power rankings and median power rankings for each classification. It lists the Top 4 teams in each class. The second analysis measures "parity" within each classification using Std. Deviation as the guideline.

  7. A review of game scoring margins (In state contests only) over the past ten (10) regular seasons clearly indicates an increase in margin of victory for each game played, especially in 2017 and 2018. This is somewhat puzzling because one would think the trend should reflect the opposite because of the new point system. ie. Better Competition = More FHSAA Power Points = More Competitive Games.

My initial thinking was that an increase in the amount of teams caused the increase. However, this is not the case because 10 years ago we actually had more schools playing 11 man football than we do today. Anyway, here are the regular season average game scoring margins from 2009-2018:

    2009 23.27
    2010 22.78
    2011 22.93
    2012 23.65
    2013 24.07
    2014 23.60
    2015 22.52
    2016 24.05
    2017 24.76
    2018 25.27

  9. It's that time of year again. Including the three "bowl" games held this week, I have come up with the following data for 2018.

558 Florida High Schools competed in 2640 games against Florida competition. Of those 2640 contests, 1294 (49%) were between schools from different classifications.  I've been compiling this information for many years and will continue to do so until the amount of classifications is significantly reduced. For schools to play half of their games vs. teams from other classifications simply makes no sense. Over the years, smaller schools (not including independents) have more than held their own against larger schools winning nearly 50% of the time. Talk about everyone getting a trophy.

Here are the results of the 1294 out of classification contests:

  10. Again, I will defend the FHSAA on the points system. I can tell you with some degree of certainty, winless Gadsden County will very likely be a slight favorite over South Walton in the first round. I know myself and Kenneth Massey both have Gadsden by 3 pts. Curious to see how Pinkos has it.

  11. I can explain. When I first began doing the rankings years ago, I kept a “stabilizer” in for half the season which prevented exactly the problem you’re bitching about. However, I got a lot of flack about that because every year some perennial powerhouses would have down years and the computer had a tendency to rank them way too high until half way through the season. As a result, I removed the stabilizer and each team now basically starts from scratch. So now at the beginning of the year, the computer doesn’t know if Interlachen is better than Miami Central. It simply adjusts as the season plays out. I suggest you stick to “polls” because no matter what, my computer will not make you happy until playoff time....if that.
