I've always followed the Laz Index: https://www.lazindex.com/fhsaa.php

For some of the newer posters, it's usually very good as the regular season comes to an end. I believe Laz uses the spreads of all the games, and then runs some sort of Monte Carlo simulation to give each team a power rating.

Preciate you putting in the link. I forgot about Laz when he took a break several years back.

  2. SOS is truly broken at this point in the season. Hopefully strength of schedule will regain some justification before the end of the season.

There is no way more than half the teams  have better strength to schedules than say Cocoa. IMG,Venice, Norland, etc... are not easy crappy teams. How does the system justify Bolles and Bishop Verot have a stronger schedule. Unless the system does not factor in IMG, even though they use IMG in the win loss bracket.

I'll make my official predictions later in the week. But Cocoa vs IMG will have my full attention. Cocoa has averaged 46.5 PPG in their two wins vs Titusville and Mainland, (47 if you round up.) Meanwhile, IMG has averaged 31.5 PPG between their loss to Corner Canyon and win over Bergen Catholic. It suggests that Cocoa should defeat IMG by a final score of 47-32. But the silver lining that could prevent a shootout is the simple fact that IMG doesn't pass very much. As usual, the issue with preparing for IMG isn't that their offense is so complex that you can't prepare for all possibilities. It's that they are so physically overwhelming that unless you have athletes of similar caliber, you cannot compete regardless of how meticulous and well-constructed your gameplan is.

Cocoa will have to score about 35 points to win this game. IMG will plan to slow the game down and limit possessions to keep Cocoa's high-octane offense off the field. Cocoa probably wants to stop the run first and make IMG beat them by passing. That sounds like a winning formula. Offensively, take what the defense gives you on every play and move at your own pace. No penalties or silly mistakes; those will kill you against a team like IMG. Cocoa is in a great position to win and potentially have a chance at the national championship if they win out; they need to pounce on it, and I think they get it done. Cocoa 35, IMG 24. How do you Cocoa guys feel? @Cat_Scratch2 @KeemD321 @Cocoafanone @Cat_Scratch @imjustafan2 @LetsGo

IMG is as good as they come. Cocoa has fast team. Not so sure of Cocoa's size compared to the Ascenders, IMG will be super tough. Cocoa can win if they can play 4 strong quarters and not be bullied on either side af the line.

STA and Chaminade still in their positions despite the losses to other powerhouse programs? :P

Bishop is rated #5 in the nation and SJB is rated #8. BG was playing their second game and seemed a little better coached, so I can see the win over STA. SJB, a very organized and well coached team, also came to ball. Tough losses for our Florida teams to 2 excellent power teams. IMHO Chaminade and STA both will have to prove they deserve their ranking though. They may have the benefit of last season hangover. They play each other 10/11, which means one will have at least a 2 loss season. They also play American Heritage Plantation during their season, so that will be a tell also.

Not sure I would over think rankings this early in the season since it's really just something for everyone to think about, play with.

I know there might be some moving up and down and it looks like it doesn’t make sense but a few teams didn’t play. I didn’t know how to rank them necessarily.

It's been many years since I've done a top 25. I just don't have the energy now days.

Thank you for your outstanding effort. Most of us older crew appreciate your energy and effort.

  6. Florida took a pounding this week in OOS games. Hats off to Bishop Gorman for coming to South Florida to play STA.

All were good games even though our top teams lost to national top teams. Can't earn national respect when getting beat head to head against teams about the same caliber.

On another note, Florida High Schools will continue to turn the second most NFL players just a few players behind Texas. IMG being #1 in the nation, #2 STA and #3 AHP are the top 3 national HSF programs with current active NFL players.

Interesting question.  Would depend on how the FHSAA wanted to interpret their eligibility.  IMG was #1 in the MaxPreps Florida rankings at the end of the regular season, so that technically would have qualified them for the Open 8 as it was proposed. But IMG is listed as "Independent" in this newest reclassification, so the FHSAA could say that you have to compete in the state series to qualify for the Open 8.  So I think the FHSAA could manipulate the rules to exclude or include IMG as they desire.

If you have a Open division, wouldn't it be open enrollment also? So 8 super teams make it to play in a brutal playoff. I'd want to watch the games.

I think an open division is a good idea only if you cut the classes down substantially. Because it would be a mockery of biblical proportions if we took the 8-16 best teams in the state put them in 1 bracket and then had 7-9 more brackets of nothing but the good to average to below average teams. The champions would be atrocious. It would be an embarrassment beyond repair. A stain on the sport. I pray it never comes to that

I'm not sure there are 16 teams capable of competing in an open bracket... maybe 5 or 6 teams could give it a good shot and have a chance of winning when STA and Chaminade are hurting from injuries or illnesses. Would the open include IMG?

IMG, STA, MC, AHP, and Chaminade would be the real contenders. Then you have teams like Lakeland, Venice, Cocoa, BTW, etc... that get hot some seasons that might get through a few rounds but then STA and Chaminade will always be waiting for them in the semi's...
