Everything you said is true.   But, if FAMU/Tallahassee is the "best offer the FHSAA has on the table," then the FHSAA isn't doing a very good job.   It shouldn't all be about the Benjamins.  They need to balance out the financial side with the impact that their decisions have on the teams playing (including players, coaches, cheerleaders, bands, fans, etc.).  And they need to be reaching out to potential venues to figure out how to make it a win-win.   Now, to be fair, I don't know if they've been doing this or not.  But, if they've been trying, they've been failing.

No shade to my alma mater, but the FHSAA...

According to this article, a new law went into effect in July here in Florida that requires Florida educators to call students by their legal name unless permission is given by the parents to use a nickname.  Certainly, according to the article, that's the way the Orange County School Board is interpreting the new law.

So, here's my question.   I've been around football fields, baseball fields and basketball courts over half a century.  Nicknames are commonplace and coaches pick up on them and use them routinely.   Some nicknames are given by the parents early in life and stick with the kids all through school.  But oftentimes the coaches are the ones who come up with the nicknames.  Sometimes the nicknames are the result of physical traits (or limitations); sometimes geography comes into play (one of my son's teammates was dubbed "Cali" because he moved to Florida from, yep, you guessed it, California).  If you've ever seen "Remember the Titans," you'll recall that the QB, Ronnie Bass, was nicknamed "Sunshine."

Since Coaches are part of the education system, will they now face punishment, discipline or termination if, without a written permission slip from the kid's parents, they call sports-playing kids anything other than their formal legal name?

The rate in which the world is going to hell is accelerating quickly.

There’s no way those were family decisions that would scream unfit parenting with ZERO foundation.

sadly the parents today have no control the kids tell them what they’re doing , so if the kid makes it big later they can be one of the first ones to reap the financial benefits.

That is a shame indeed.  As a father of two teenagers, "I WISH" one of them had the nerves to dictate who rules the roost.  Their last days in my house, TO START...

4-star DL now playing for his fourth HS in four years and seems to be travelling coast to coast to play.  How does this guy manage to retain eligibility?  Are there any actual transfer eligibility rules anymore?

Not sure about GA rules, but the kid went from private to public in Atlanta.  Then across the country to LA, and eventually back to Miami.  I would like to believe that was more of a "family" decision but in today's climate, who knows.

I plan to be there if Venice is fortunate enough to get past Manatee! Come say hi at some point before the game! We talked about it on Scorestream a bit last year, but I wasn't able to buy tickets and instead fell victim to the corrupt NFHS site which stole my money. Infuriating! But until that day, it must be so hot to be a Dreadnaught! ;)

If we both make it, I will be there!  Yes, it's Soooo Hot....  You know the rest, lol.

Our offensive line cost us that game last season. We also didn't have a single senior on our offensive line. What does that tell you about our 2023 product?

That tells me if Venice doesn't win it all (and get that CAI monkey off their backs), 2023 will be a disappointment.  Will the Indians rise to the challenge?  We will see!  Like last year, I'm rooting for you guys up until you face Lakeland if that even happens.  Gotta get by those damn Kowboys, possibly twice.  Gonna be a fun season!

The source of most of these competitive imbalance problems are the South Florida juggernauts. Put them into their own classification and let them duke it out, then create 5-6 classifications for the remaining teams and you should theoretically see much more competition with the so-called, "little guys," having a chance. Agree alot with @Dr. D on this.

Wait, we have that now.  It's called Metro/Suburban/Rural. :P

Serious question:  how can you have a pre-season "Power Rating?"  What are each team's 'power rating' based upon?  How the team performed last year?  Particularly stupid for high school teams that lose  60-70% of the starters every year, on average.   Sports writers voting like in college?  Yeah, you've got a handful (if that) of season, grizzled veteran writers across the state that care enough to dig into how each team in the state should perform this season; the rest are lucky to know who the best team in their city is going to be and know very little about the rest of the state.  And, obviously, the power rating can't be based on how the teams have performed thus far because no one has played a single game.

    So, what's it based on?

Talent perception and other intangibles that don't mean a thing until the games are played.

I’ve noticed he hasn’t been on here I wonder what made him leave this board

As @Jullian and @VeniceIndianFan pointed out, I proposed a friendly board wager and the loser would put something in their signature about the winning team.  @DisabledAccount decided to go all in and counter my bet with terms of his own and lost.  Below is a link to the original thread.

Introducing DisabledAccount: Lake Wales 37, Columbia 7 - Crow Time

With Lake Wales graduating 8 defensive starters and Naples losing much talent of their own, it looks like this is the season where Mainland takes over and wins 3S. Will the Bucs do it?

Will ColumbiaFan return and lobby for his team!?

Sorry to disagree that even public schools are NOT FREE and more problematic is they aren't created equal either.  As an old retiree with no kids or grandkids (youngest just graduated) in HS, my ad valorem taxes haven't gone away rather keep creeping up and a big chunk is for schools.   My daughter and son-in-law moved out of Kissimmee to the east side of St. Cloud over a decade ago so their two daughters would attend the highest rated (academic) public HS in Osceola County, Harmony HS.  Both graduated at the top of their class, but if the programs in place today for school choice were available back then, they may have taken their voucher $$$ and put them in a private school requiring no move.  That is the difference between then and now.  More parents are taking advantage of this benefit mostly for academic and other reasons outside of sports, but if that choice involves a school with no sports program, they have an alternative .  Yes, lots do it for sports also, but I completely agree with you that EDUCATION should be at the forefront of this conversation and I believe it is the impetus for these changes.

So, I need someone to help me out:  as I understand it (from a bird's eye view), the government (state or county??) is going to provide vouchers for families who choose for their kids to attend a private school instead of a public school, right?  But there is a limited amount of money that can/will be spent on education.   County school boards try as hard as they can to stay ahead of the development and growth.  Developers are required to set aside land (or at least give the school board the opportunity to negotiate for the purchase of land) before single-family houses can be permitted.  OK.  That makes sense.

But don't the schools have to be built with the assumption that every kid in the new neighborhood will be going to the public school (because that could happen)?  And the cost of the land and the cost of building a school (and all the facilities that go along with it, such as gyms, football fields, baseball and softball fields, etc.) are, for the most part, fixed costs.  If a school board buys the land and then builds a new high school with the expectation that 2,000 kids will attend (using the taxpayer money that is needed to build that facility), but then only 1,200 show up, will that same taxpayer-supported school board then have to provide vouchers so the other 800 can attend private school?   The government (i.e., the taxpayers) will then be paying for both the public school system and the private school system.   How is that economically feasible?

I'm not looking for an argument; just an explanation.

Studies estimate that public schools may lose up to 15% of population as opposed to the 40% number in your question.  In addition, they are funding the student, not the school.   Using your 2000 number when a new public school opens, that number quickly balloons beyond that as the community grows and the excess is moved from several adjoining schools to build a new one.  That seems to imply it was deemed productive at 2000, can handle 2500 so what difference does it make where that excess population goes?  Some leave to charter, Christian or private and the number goes back to the original estimate that it was designed for.  At least, that is the logic my simple mind tells me they are using.   Undoubtedly, there will be additional cost to fund this program.  But I harken back to your original question, why is the FDOE doing this?  Is it remotely possible that many public schools are failing us?

It's Friday and I didn't feel like responding to everyone individually.  Here are the estimates under the expanded voucher system for Polk County:

Expanded Voucher System Could Cost Polk Schools Up To $70 Million

If those kids have size, speed and/or talent, I have no doubt they'll be able to find someplace else to play, with or without "encouragement" from others.

Plenty of options along the Ridge.  We won't mention the western part of the county! :D

  13. 16 hours ago, Dr. D said:

It may not be much consolation to the kids there, but I believe they could benefit from HB 225, effective July 1, which allows an athlete to participate at another public school in their district or at a private school, if there school does not offer that sport.  Who knew our lawmakers had such foresight?

I’m sure, or at least hopeful that these kids that desire to play can find a football home at some of the neighboring Polk county schools.

  14. 1 hour ago, Perspective said:

I'm just wondering how many of these "unintended consequences" there will be before folks say "let's just go back to the way it was and unless a kid chooses to attend a private school, the kid must attend the school for which he/she is zoned."  And what will the high school sports world look like when that finally happens?

Who's going to be the score keeper? :D

  15. 53 minutes ago, Ray Icaza said:

As Dr. D correctly pointed out, the intent is to provide opportunity for extracurricular activity to those that don't have it.  Be it football, band, religious beliefs or the debate team.  Whether we have negative unintended consequences remains to be seen as well as what tweaks can be made to correct them.   The general concept of "School Choice" is embraced by the vast majority of parents, particularly in minority families with only a single Mom raising her kids.

Now wait wait wait!  You mean to tell me that School Choice isn't about academics!  If Billy Ball, Sally Slugger, Fiona Flautist, Harry Holy or Tyler Talker wants to attend a different program for extra-curricular activities which could further their chances for advancement after graduation, that is certainly within their rights to do so.  However, education is (or should be) at the forefront of that conversation each and every time.  I'm envious of some of the educational opportunities this generation has access to, FOR FREE!  Even in little 'ole Polk County, but I digress.

It's time for me to get my popcorn because the show is about tot start.

Any county or school willing to punish their own students by entertaining a scheme like this just to throw a wrench in the system should be ashamed of themselves.   For example, in basketball you have maybe a dozen players on a team and if only one district team has a program it leaves dozens of kids out in the cold.  Seems evil to me.

Can we say, Lawsuits!  Program closures in any sport will leave some players out in the cold.

rumor on the streets, as there was a board meeting for fhsaa the last few days,

several countys are putting together ideas that would become "nightmare scenario" (the exact phrase I was told)---

school a is always good at basketball, but other county schools are just ok and some are terrible, push all those ok kids to school a and do away with basketball at all the other schools.

school b in same county is really good at football, but terrible at basketball.  other schools are ok to good, push all the good kids to school b and do away with football at rest of schools.

    etc.

    have powerhouse sport specific schools.

the district, regional, state series would become a complete waste of time as some school districts may only have a school or 2 that are playing specific sports....

nightmare indeed, if it becomes rampant across the state....

already underpaid teachers and coaches in the best sport state in the country, florida sports will become a complete joke if any of these ideas come to fruition.

add in that ole Ron is making school start at 830 across the state in 3 years, now getting involved with athletics,  smh

WOW.  It would be interesting to find out what counties are coming up with this?  It's one thing to be inept in a particular sport.  It's another to get rid of said sport completely and intentionally send talent to neighboring programs.  Again, if there are counties considering this why not leave the FHSAA.  Membership is optional for now, correct?  Sounds like a punk move.

Did I read the story correctly that IMG National team will now be able to compete for a FHSAA state title in football?   What classification would they be in?   Do they have to play by FHSAA rules or can they keep recruiting statewide/nationwide for talent?

Based on what I've seen, as it stands now IMG would reside in 2S with Bayshore, Booker, DeSoto County and Lemon Bay.  That's assuming that IMG wants to participate in a statewide playoff system.

Nulli I couldn't have possibly put this better than you did. Beautiful message. Who's chopping these damn onions...

I didn't plan on telling a story today but the unscripted tales are typically the best ones.  This comes a week after burying one of my older cousins who passed from Pancreatic cancer at 66.

Nothing wrong with tears.  I didn't learn that until I lost my father almost 20 years ago (July 15th makes 20) and even now, that sounds weird to say.

Powerful testimony Nulli, it brought tears to my eyes. I'm guessing you and I are close in age.

I remember me and a good friend, who died too young in 2015, were able to sneak into that old place you mentioned on Hwy 92 and Combee RD many, many years ago. Thank GOD it's a house of worship today.

    Life happens.

Yes, we have to be somewhat close in age if you experienced and/or even knew the establishment that will remain nameless.  I forgot it anyway, lol.  I'm not sure exactly when it closed but I want to say it was after I graduated in '94, sometime in the late summer or fall.  I was still 17 at the time and when I turned 18 and came home for a weekend from college, it was gone.

You can find a house of worship on every corner in Lakeland today and that's a good thing.

I can't deny that fact. I just don't know how the last 30 years when by so fast. :o

From the second we're born, that train to the final destination has left the station.  It picks up speed the older you get.

The first 18 years of my life (when trying to get the hell out of my parent's house) went by very slowly.  I couldn't wait to get out of John Cox elementary school fast enough.  I couldn't get my first kiss or hunch fast enough, lol.  Then, I couldn't be rid of Crystal Lake Junior high fast enough.  Then on to high school, I couldn't get my first job fast enough at the McDonald's at the intersection of Combee Rd and 92 next to the strip club.  I couldn't get my driver's license fast enough or save up enough money to buy my own raggedy-ass car.  It was a 1987 4-door Hyundai Excel, lmao! I couldn't graduate from Lakeland fast enough.  I couldn't turn 18 fast enough so I could vote and buy my first lottery ticket.  I couldn't establish my own independence fast enough and that's when reality kicked.  Before I had all the time in the world.  Now, there's never enough time.  I have to remind myself sometimes to take things slowly and just enjoy the flow of life instead of waiting for the next big event.

I tell my children not to wish their life away.  Everything may be somewhat of a bore now but that's also the blessing.  Don't be in a rush to grow up.  If I could go back and do it all again, the only thing I would change is that I would listen to the wisdom of every adult that told me not to be in a hurry to grow up.

I can't speak for anyone else but myself.  However, when applying your statement, "I just don't know how the last 30 years when by so fast" to my own life, I can say with 100% certainty that the train of life is full speed ahead and it's filled with experiences and people that are no longer here.  The realization that one day, that will be me as well so make the most of every single day.  Leave a lasting impression.  Try to preach love, not hatred, although some situations may AT THE VERY LEAST warrant love from afar.
