Perspective got a reaction from DarterBlue2 in MaxPreps Preseason Ratings - Metro
I posted this same thing in the "Suburban" thread, but I'll ask my questions here just in case someone skipped past it to get to the Metro teams:
Serious question: how can you have a pre-season "Power Rating?" What are each team's 'power rating' based upon? How the team performed last year? Particularly stupid for high school teams that lose 60-70% of the starters every year, on average. Sports writers voting like in college? Yeah, you've got a handful (if that) of season, grizzled veteran writers across the state that care enough to dig into how each team in the state should perform this season; the rest are lucky to know who the best team in their city is going to be and know very little about the rest of the state. And, obviously, the power rating can't be based on how the teams have performed thus far because no one has played a single game.
So, what's it based on? What information goes into the algorithm before the first game gets played?

It would be nice to see some occasional new blood go on a run but not possible in the transfer era where the strong reload each year and the weak donate their best to the strong. Tired of seeing the same teams every year.

In other words, it's like the billboards say: Size matters.
My wife told me the same thing . . . but she married me anyway.

But the problem here is (as with most pre-season polls), Mater Dei is preseason number 1. Gorman is 2, St John Bosco 3 and IMG 4. Central is 5. If Central beats Gorman, and assuming all the other teams mentioned stay undefeated, I can see Central possibly jumping over Bosco and IMG, but probably not MD. Only time will tell.

VIF, are you just trying to pump TBT up so that if Venice beats them in the KOC, the win is more impressive, and if Venice loses, the loss doesn't look so bad?
Truth be told, TBT has always had the athletes (and may truly have their most loaded team in recent history), but in my humble opinion (and no disrespect intended), TBT has lacked the team discipline and the coaching to hang with the big boys and win a state title.

Not pumping them up for the KOC. Just see that they have a lot of talent on paper and look primed to meet STA in the 3M finals. They have the talent to win 3M, or failing that, to lose to STA in the finals again. But of course, Jones, Armwood, and Edgewater all look powerful on paper as well so we will have to see how things shake out. But 3M is one of the more interesting classes this year for sure and I would love to see STA somehow get knocked off (hopefully at the hands of Dillard!)

Perspective got a reaction from DarterBlue2 in Recruiting Question??
So many factors at play here. Are offenses game-planning around him? Are opponent QB's not even throwing the ball down field because this kid is lurking back there waiting? Is this kid's team loaded on defense and the D-line and LB'ers are making most of the tackles?
I'm curious how the kid is built: is he 6'2", 185 with a frame that can hold the 15 pounds that he'll likely gain his first year of college? Does he have good speed? Does he play downhill? Is he aggressive?
In answer to your question, I'd say college recruit on a combination of potential and production. You can't teach speed, size or instinct, so if a kid checks all of these boxes, even if his statistical numbers aren't all that impressive, he'll still get offers over the 5'8, 160 kid who has better numbers.

Pinellas FB, lucky you don't have ColumbiaFan lurking in the weeds. He would be quite upset you are picking on "Private" schools for recruiting but not bashing the "Publics" that do the same.

I don't know about that Nolebull . . . I suspect the high school band and high school chess club message boards have been lighting up lately . . . filled will vigorous discussion and debate about this very topic.
Oh, and be careful what you wish for . . . one of these days, the FHSAA may very well grow another pair.

It just sucks for the kid who was going to be the starter at the school where the "departing kid" transfers into.
But such is life, I guess.

I’m with you when you right but central got a few players from broward as well. 3 from Dillard.
& yea the majority maybe Miami talent but they’re not Miami central zoned talent lol. Either way them rockets doing their thing so it’s all love & respect.

I don't doubt that Central has a lot of home-grown talent. But when you're get 3 transfers from California, 2 from Texas and 8 from other parts of the state (assuming what VIF posted is true), well, all I can say is that's one helluva big home they've got.

Agreed. I was just pointing out the problem that I have with pre-season polls . . . especially national polls at the high school level. Too many teams can run the table, so, more often than not, where you start is where you finish.

My own take on the education system: too much centralized power in Tallahassee and Washington. There is no local say or control anymore. Your local school board has very little authority at at all. Too much emphasis on standardized tests and over emphasis on STEM at the expense of language arts and humanities.

Perspective reacted to VeniceIndianFan in DILLARD 2023-2024 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
That’s true now but we’re not like this every year. For all of our overall successful seasons, we have only 3 state championships. Last year Venice would have gotten their heads beaten in by 24+ points by Homestead, STA, Central, etc. because our offense was almost completely anemic.
This year’s Venice team should win 4S with relative ease. And for the record, the name STA makes Venice folk need a diaper change. Lol

Perspective reacted to Ray Icaza in 2023 Transfers
This question probably has many factors to consider including years of eligibility, level of performance, importance of that extracurricular activity, proximity to a viable school, etc.. that parents need to weigh in the development of their child. If he only has 1 year of eligibility left and is truly talented enough to secure a scholarship like the RB example I had previously discussed with Coach Beek in this thread, absolutely. Go be a star at that other school, especially if it is in the same community. In this case this young man has worked extremely hard and just happens to be on a squad that has another great player that has been with the program thru youth right into his freshmen season. He wasn't an out-of-town transfer in this case, but the effect is still the same and I completely understand why this RB left our school for another. Excellent kid and we wish him the best. Team sports in my youth were incredibly important coming from another country it help me build friendships, build confidence, acceptance into the community, discipline, hard work, meritocracy and so many other things that were important building blocks. Definitely there is great value in team sports.

Dr D, I don't have the time right now to read through the report, so I am in no position to challenge the findings or the report. I was curious, however, about who or what the Center for Research on Education Outcomes is and, more importantly, where they get their funding. It didn't take me long to see that this particular report (the one you've cited above) got its funding from The Walton Family Foundation and The City Fund.
With respect to the Walton Family Foundation, its own website says this: "The Walton Family Foundation was one of the first philanthropies to support the expansion of high-quality public charter schools. John Walton — who pioneered this work — believed charter schools could provide options and opportunities and fuel needed innovation in America's schools."
And with respect to The City Fund, it reportedly "uses over $100 million in grants to grow charter and charter-like schools" (See https://www.chalkbeat.org/2020/2/21/21178789/a-major-new-player-in-education-giving-the-city-fund-uses-over-100-million-in-grants-to-grow-charter).
Again, I'm not in a position to challenge the findings, but at first blush, this appears to be one of those situations where data was collected and analyzed and the findings just happened to match up with the goals of those who funded the study.
Just remember what they say: There are three types of lies -- lies, damn lies, and statistics.
My shoot-from-the-hip concern is that a state-funded charter school system will ultimately lead to a tiered educational system where the 'haves' continue to prosper and the 'have-nots' continue to flounder and the chasm between the two grows wider and wider over time.

I agree 100% that you should consider the source. That is why I used the word "possibly" in my initial post to explain the interest in charter schools and vouchers -- people may read a headline and not delve into the details. I cannot attest to the scientific validity of the findings and have no desire to do a deep dive, but the article does acknowledge there were three separate studies undertaken. The first study (2000-01 through 2007-08) showed that charter schools performed worse than traditional public schools. The second study (2006-07 through 2010-11) showed slight improvement in the performance of charter schools. Only in the third study (2014 to 2019) did charter schools outperform traditional public schools. It also notes that not every charter school is succeeding, noting the failure of full-time online charter schools, and the failure to serve special needs students. Other studies that I have looked at produce conflicting conclusions as to the effectiveness of charter schools. But there is also a lot of evidence to suggest that at least some public schools are failing in their mission.
I personally feel that the success or failure of a democratic, capitalistic society hinges significantly on the success or failure of an education system(s) that serves and educates all students.
