Quiz- Best FL HS WR Ever?

The best Florida player to play WR at a FL high school over the past 40 years has got to be Michael Irvin, right?  Well, there is a good argument that it could be somebody else.

Michael Irvin played for great teams like St Thomas Aquinas, the Hurricanes, and the Dallas Cowboys.  His Cowboys won 3 Super Bowls.

There is another wide receiver who played his hs years at a FL school not known for football.  His team only won 2 playoff games during his time there.  Even so, he earned All-American honors.  Like Irvin, he was a star WR in college, played for a top-ranked college team, skipped his final year of college eligibility, and was drafted by an NFL team in the first round.  During his NFL career, he played for teams that often lost more games than they won and rarely made the playoffs.  In his entire career, his teams won only 2 NFL playoff games.  Despite this, he put up some amazing numbers.  In fact, he accomplished a number of things in the NFL neither Michael Irvin nor any other wide receiver to play hs football in FL ever did.

Who am I?

Peter Warrick?

Good guess, Cocoa, but keep trying!  Warrick had a fantastic hs and college career, but most would say his pro career was a big disappointment.

Unlike the person I had in mind, Warrick played on some fantastic teams in hs, ie back-to-back state titles at Bradenton Southeast.

It is Andre Johnson. See video highlights below from his days at Miami High, where he teamed up with future Cane Roscoe Parrish, who played qb on that Miami High team.  Johnson was an All-State selection and Parade All-American as a senior with 31 catches for 908 yards and 15 TDs.  Johnson was one of the most highly recruited players in the country.  Was timed at 4.4 in the 40 and had a 35-inch vertical leap.  Went on to play college ball at the University of Miami.

In Miami's 2001 Rose Bowl victory over Nebraska, which earned them a national title, he earned Co-MVP honors with quarterback Ken Dorsey. In that game, he caught seven passes for 199 yards, including two touchdown receptions.  In 2002, he became only the second player in Miami history to gain 1,000 or more yards receiving in a season...caught 52 passes for 1,092 yards (21.0 ypc) and nine touchdowns...led the nation in yards per catch at 21.0.  Johnson was also a Big East track sprinting champion.

The 6'3" Johnson was the #3 overall pick by the Houston Texans in the 2003 NFL draft.  He played with them most of his career.  During his NFL career of 193 games, he had 1062 receptions, 14,185 receiving yards, and 70 TD receptions.  He is currently #11 on the NFL's list for most career receiving yards.  Only one NFL player in history who played less than 200 games has more career receiving yards.  Johnson was a 7-time Pro Bowler and 5-time All Pro.  He led the NFL in receiving yards for two seasons.  Johnson set numerous NFL receiving records during his career.

One can argue who is better.  Let's just say both he and Michael Irvin are likely the best receivers of the modern era to come out of Florida based on the success they had throughout their high school, college and NFL careers.

Good job Bocefous!

    • I’m not saying it doesn’t occur. What I am saying is that everything is case by case so if you are accusing a specific coach/team of cheating, I would at least like to see the evidence of the accusation. Because if you don’t then you are basically defaming them with gossip
    • Are you saying illegal recruiting does not occur in Florida ?     Wake up and take your blinders off
    • Dang shame. Wonder what it was about. Wonder if the principle was meddling out of his element.    There was a story near me about Land O Lakes High. Before the season, 2 freshman were slap boxing and other kids were filming it. One kid was obviously winning over the other with the kids in the background cheering it on. So when it got leaked, it was interpreted as hazing. As if all the kids in the background were sanctioning it.    Without one second of investigation the principal shut the entire football program down. Varsity season cancelled over 2 freshman slap boxing. It caused a shit storm. Local news swarmed the school. Parents outraged. Protesting outside the office demanding the principal be fired.    They finally asked some quick questions and it was determined to be exactly what it was originally said it was. Football was reinstated but JV missed the first game over it.    The principal was some punk pencil neck who looks like he never played a sport in his life and many people came out and said he had it out for the football program and he was the same way at his old school.    I say all that to say is this a similar case of some pencil neck principal who never played sports trying to undermine and butt in to something that they are way out their element on?
    • Word is, Coach Banks the former head coach was escorted off campus last week after a heated discussion with the principle. from what i have been told this stems from banks talking to the paper about the program.
    • They definitely would have been competitive. They had a really good and really young OL coming back. They also had settled into a pattern of getting plenty of transfers.
