Riverview was #1 in 6A for much of the 1996 season.  Here they faced off with 6A #2 Carol City in a regular season matchup in Sarasota, won by Riverview 31-9.

Riverview was a very tough team in the late 80's and 90's under legendary coach John Sprague.  Between 1988-1999, they were 15-10 in playoff games. They lost those 10 playoff games by a combined total of 44 points.  9 of those 10 losses were decided by a TD or less.  Talk about a tough out!  Riverview appeared twice in the 5A finals (1988 and 1990), and made it to the third round three times.  In 1996, they were knocked out in the third round by Pensacola 10-7.

Carol City finished 1996 14-1 and won the 6A title.  This was their only loss of the year, and was a very impressive win for Riverview.  This Carol City team breezed their way through the playoffs, outscoring their opponents 156-38 in 5 games on their way to the Chief's second state title in school history.

Watching the game reminded me how different it was back then. This was just two years before I became a big fan of High school Football.
