Kevin Mays made Viera football program.  Having staff continuity is the top factor in making a new school competitive. Of course, coaches need to be competent to begin with.

Was able to watch the  Cocoa game streaming last night and he has his hands full with the changes he's making. Has two top RBs as Cocoa always seems to have(not Gaines but the other RB scored 5 TDs), and spent a lot of time on passing game that struggled. If he relies on running game he should do well, but defense did not look like a Cocoa defense last night. Gave up a ton of yards and points for them.  I don't know much about the coach but he has big shoes to fill.

Last night I added playoff records for each of the teams in the original post and one can see how poorly some of these programs have performed since opening.  If Florida is overflowing with talent, why have so many of these teams struggled?  If nothing changes, is it possible that in 25 years we will have yet another 75 "new" schools in the upper classes who struggle? 
Something is very wrong when we have numerous schools in major metro areas in football-rich FL who are still not competitive after 20 years of playing.  
   

After last night this game would get a lot of hype and interest both on state and National level

I think these two might meet up in the finals just my opinion tho...

Columbia just beat National ranked IMG convincingly and to ME they had the best performance last nigh night lol.. 
Venice tied Plant, Indians led Plant several times 
Plant tied Venice Panthers were able to fight back
Viera what can I say about them o yea they are cheaters and are very down from last year but they had a QB that could scramble(because our defense coulda prevented it but we didn't t wrap up tackles)..
Dwyer need to find an offensive identity but they definitely gotta D tho
 

No that was when they had the big running qb.  Wasn't the best throwing the ball but he could just run wild with the line he had, and it would allow WRs to run wide open.  It seemed nearly impossible to stop the read option runs of his.  Also the defense was the best one by far.  

Nah 2016 no question.

We will never know for sure but regardless Columbia proved we are a serious threat in 7a during that game 

ColumbiaFan...I tease a lot about Columbia High because of you.  In reality, I have tremendous respect for the program, as does anyone who knows anything about FL hs football. 
My guess is that the people who think otherwise are basing it off the 20 years of football they have seen since they were in diapers.  So, consider the source of people truly belittling/bashing the program (and not just teasing you like me).
No slight intended, but you have seen very little football in your day, relatively speaking, and aren't in the best position to be defending Columbia's honor.  Leave that for the players who were grinding it 20+ years ago.  And I guarantee you, they are not worried about what some punk on the internet says about Columbia football, because they know better.         
     

Agree with both points of view. Columbia shocked everyone by dominating first quarter. But the true dominance of IMG is they pound on you with those big guys up front on both sides of the ball and in second half- dominate. Find it hard to believe with Cain and Sanders this won't happen all season long, two of the top RBs in nation. I agree with OSLion that you can't count half a game as a win,especially against an IMG second half team. 
That said all Columbia fans should be flying high as a kite, team looked great in all phases of game and you should be looking forward to one of the better seasons in your history. Lots to be excited about!

But to assume we couldn't have won a full game is crazy,  could they have come back?  Perhaps but we may have won anyway
In fact our coaches were pissed that we weren't going to play a full game,  we wanted to play national team for 4 quarters,  it was IMG call to put in backups 
@nolebull813 can verify this bc he actually spoke to one of our coaches at the game 
 
Regardless of it the fact we hung with them when most thought we would get our ass kicked, we proved we are a serious threat in 7a north and 7a in general and that was with our 2 time defensive MVP sitting out with injury

With all due respect for Columbia's performance last night, I think it is a disservice to teams who beat IMG in a full, regular season game, to group them together with teams that "won" 1/2 half of football in a preseason game.  There is no comparison.  
On that first drive of the second half, IMG moved right down the field and I have to wonder what would have happened if play between the starting teams would have continued.  After witnessing that, I would not have been willing to bet against IMG coming back .  
I don't mean to sound harsh, buddy, but I wish folks would pick one set of statistical books to operate off of and stick there.  We have one set that includes spring games. We have one that includes "full" preseason games.  We have one that includes 1/2 of play.  And we mix and match them and come up with statistics that necessitate lots of asterisks.    
Why can't we just say that Columbia played a great half of football and leave it at that?  Why do we have to try and squeeze some obscure statistic out of it to prove their "greatness?"  Legacy programs like Columbia don't need to be desperate.  That stuff is for programs who have had so little success that they have to scrounge for something to celebrate.

Long time Vero fan, sloppy game on both sides from what I saw, but that’s to be expected being a KOC.
Vero’s weakness is what they thought it would be: the O line. Vero QB Celadonio was under pressure all night and they’re running game was virtually non existent. Lots of penalties on both sides, lot of cramping and injuries on both sides (all legit from what I saw despite Flotech’s assumption.) 
Viera looked down from last year, but so does Vero. Lots to work on for both teams, To be honest I’d say both teams are in real trouble next week: Viera (Rockledge) Vero (Venice.)

Honest opinion...Viera has a good linebacker #1 and a solid front four...DBs are beatable...offense not impressive other than a QB that can scramble and beat you with his feet....Vero offensive line was offensive to watch they couldn’t block anyone...run game non-existent...defense got pressure from front four but tackling or lack thereof was some of the worst I’ve ever seen from a Vero squad

I'm just wondering if the constant transferring of players in and out isn't taking a toll on some of these coaches. They are trying all summer to put a viable team together and players up and leave at various times and for various reasons. Maybe other players arrive that have to be brought up to speed quickly. Many of these coaches are giving a lot of their time and effort and are probably not getting paid much or not being paid at all. At least, before the allowing of transfers anywhere at anytime, the coach knew that most of the players he worked with would still be there after the summer. Doesn't seem to be much dedication, on the part of many players, to either the school or the coaching staff anymore. Just a what's in it for me attitude.

Cocoa game the closest, should have given the kicker chance at the tie from 50 out. Heavy favorite Cocoa, go figure. 

You can bet on it. Since Spectrum gobbled up Brighthouse it's all about the money and recouping their acquisition dollars. Word is the in season football "Game of the Week" is history, along with the channel its shown on. Also feeling the knife cut is high school baseball, basketball, and volley programming, free movie access,  and streaming of many ESPN's family of channels above your paid tier are on the chopping block too. When cable giant Charter Communication swallowed the other monster Time Warner and rebranded itself Spectrum we cable subscribers got the shaft. Sound familiar ?  

A fair assessment based on what I saw. The two teams were about equal, but Raines made enough plays to pull the win out. 

Raines deserved the win. It wasn't the refs. The flags were thrown against both teams. Both teams played their asses off. Brandon Marshall had to be the MVP. Hope he is ok... look forward to seeing him play on Saturdays. Their QB was good too. We had some dropped passes and a fumble in the end zone. Have to hand it to Raines defense. They all but shut down the run.
It was an exciting game. Well worth the price for admission. Wilks should have let Alex try to tie it with a FG. He did make a 47 harder earlier and was hitting them from 50 in warm ups.
No complaints. See you next year.
