Westland ended their streak tonight against ATM. Huge step down in competition from Doral to ATM but amazing to go from 86-0 to 6-0.

Zoe Boy,  my comment to Panther earlier was simply to demonstrate that not all Dade teams just throw the ball up with a prayer and rely upon athleticism to catch it. As an example, one of my favorite games of the modern era was the BTW vs Armwood state semi in 2004, which I attended at Armwood.  BTW had very good athletes and they also had a coach at the time (Ice Harris) who figured out how to use them most effectively.
Washington was still pretty new on the FL playoff scene and Harris introduced a game plan that was very calculated...and exciting to watch.  It was a coaching duel between two great coaches...Callahan and Harris.  That Armwood team was incredible.  Their defense was lights out...very physical and pretty fast for the time.  Washington was the only one to get close to them in the playoff that year and should have beat them.
Even with the fantastic athletes Washington had then, they were not going to "outathlete" that Armwood defense.  Washington had a very balanced attack and a great game plan that allowed them to nearly win that game.  So, yes south FL has some extraordinary athletes, but over the years they have also had extraordinary coaches, too.  And I think coaching is going to become even more important today because with the rise of the Orlando area teams, Miami teams are not going to simply blow them away with speed and athleticism.

I was telling a friend of mine that the reason Glades Central was good in the 1990s there wasn't a lot of transfer no Facebook or Twitter most importantly there was no new High Schools being bulit at the time. A lot of talent stay in Glades Central now times definitely changed new High Schools are built families moving from the Muck etc etc

    https://www.ocregister.com/2018/09/17/at-first-glance-img-academy-vs-mater-dei-football-breakdown/
IMG players to watch: Defensive end Nolan Smith (6-3, 242), Georgia commit, No. 2 overall recruit in the nation, according to 247Sports. Senior has 4.5 sacks … Uncommitted running back Trey Sanders (6-0, 214). Third on the team in rushing — behind two seniors – with 101 yards and one TD. Quarterback David Baldwin, a standout last season at Upland, leads IMG with 290 yards on 30 carries. … Wide receiver Josh Delgado, a former playmaker at St. John Bosco.
Mater Dei players to watch: Uncommitted defensive end/wide receiver Bru McCoy, five sacks, six TD catches …. USC committed junior quarterback Bryce Young, 16 for 16 passing in last game, 927 yards, 12 TDs, three INT. … Cornerback Elias Ricks, one of the top juniors in the country. … Left tackle Myles Murao, another top junior in the nation.
Rested teams: Both teams are coming off a bye week. IMG didn’t play St. John’s last week because of Hurricane Florence. The Monarchs had a scheduled bye.

That Pensacola Washington team had Soph Derrick Brooks. Manatee went up to Pensacola Washington and annihilated them  40-12 for that semi-final game with Chris Bilkie and Kevin Freeman..(both went on to play for the University of Florida) leading the way via Manatee's dominating rushing attack, that also had Patrick McNeal OL ( went on to play and start for FSU).  I believe 1989 was the 1st year the FHSAA required the championship games be played at a neutral site......in this case Daytona Beach. I have video of the Pine Forrest 87 & 88 state championship games as well as the 89 Manatee state championship win over Carol City in 89.

For anyone feeling charitable, apparently Asst Coach Gazzillo at St Thomas Aquinas needs some help.  He was a graduate asst at Penn St and head coach of 2 different south FL high schools.  He has spent about 20 years at St Thomas being mentored by George Smith, but doesn't have a clue how to coach elite players/teams.  Maybe someone out there could give him a call and some pointers.
Oh, and just top be clear, I am being sarcastic...sarcastic as hell actually.

Hell, Manatee got their collective asses handed to them in that 1993 state championship game 69-36 against Southridge, so I dont know how you get "came up short" The player Wille's handing off to in your picture was Shevin Wiggins who went on to play at Nebraska......Shevin may have been voted the player of the year if my memory serves me right. Manatee's 1992 championship team wasn't as physically imposing as its previous championship teams. Orange Park should have beaten Manatee, but Sammy Hixson 95 yard INT for a TD  turned that game completely around and Willie and Shevin took the game over with a couple of late TD's to seal the win. The Championship game against Dillard was just a simple case of a Dillard team with superior talent and size but was very poorly coached.

The QB for Manatee game versus Southeast wasn't with Manatee by the end of the regular season, and in all honesty Manatee was much better for it. The Manatee OL that season, while not as big as the 83 and 84 teams, still averaged about 250-260 (which was still huge for that time period for HS football). The Southeast defense (They were known as "Orange Crush"). that season was probably one of Southeast best ever, no RB ran for over 100 yards against them that season until the state championship when Emmett ran for about 150 yards against them. Manatee's game against Woodham for the state championship in 1985 was a year late in happening, as Manatee's 1984  team had eyed Woodham all season long as the team they wanted to play for a state championship, only to be upset by Lakelend 19-14 in the second round of the playoffs. Manatee fumbled twice inside the Lakeland 10 and it ultimately cost them the game.

I was extremely impressed by both teams in games I saw them play.  Miami Central was very disciplined in their game against St John's.  St John's is obviously a well-coached, disciplined team, like St Thomas.  Central will need a similar performance to beat STA.  From what I recall, Central did not rely upon big plays to hang in there.  They mixed up the run and pass with grinding drives.  Considering the poor weather, I thought their qb did an effective job.  And their defense was rock solid, if not spectacular at times.   Most importantly, they were very poised and showed maturity as a team.
STA''s defense is outstanding.   They have the tools to contain any team and are absolutely loaded with individual talent.  It seems like it has become sport of some to pick on STA's offense in recent years.  They have playmakers (Carter and Rosemy) who can make things happen against an athletic Central defense.  Their qb is seasoned and smart (has a Harvard offer).  I'll take that combo every day.  They are so deep, too.  They have 3 RB's and 4 WR's they can throw at you.  Their O-line is big and seasoned.  This offense can wear you down.  And many of these kids have been playing together for a while.  Some think STA is loaded with transfers.  The truth is that most of their current players came up through the ranks, so they know how to play together.
This has the makings of a fantastic matchup.  Forget all of the "they should have played when..."  Enjoy the game being played this week.

Two things stood out to me. First the size (or lack thereof of the linemen). Back then, it seems like both lines still had athletes, at least in high school, and not the freak show we have today.
The second thing that stood out: Manatee came into this game ranked # 1 in Florida and 20 nationally and clearly did not have a true QB. They had an athlete at the position. While I can see such a team still winning a State Title in Florida, I can't for the life of me see them ranked so high.

Village Academy’s issue is being a small small most of their talent transfers to Atlantic. They’ve had also had a revolving door of coaches the last 3 years after Hanna stepped down.

HML’s population isn’t as Hispanic as both Westland or Varela. I watched their kickoff classic and they had a decent amount of athletes. I believe the challenge is the district and kids knowing regardless the talent gap is too large.

Westland is almost all Cuban kids with no prior football experience. In a Miami Herald article last year the new head coach (4th in 4 years) talked about having to teach kids how to wear shoulder pads. Then the program was growing from having 10-15 kids at practice under previous coaches.
