OldSchoolLion reacted to Cat_Scratch in Coaching Turnover Numbers by County at Public Schools This Season
For Brevard, John Wilkinson left Cocoa to coach his son who will be playing at New Smyrna. Can't blame him really when his wife teaches at NSBHS and his son plays football there. He was driving 45 or so miles to coach at Cocoa.

Hillsborough County Coaches
30%(9/30) of the coaches below are new.
53%(16/30) have been at their present school 1 year or less.
30%(9/30) have been at their present school 5 years or more.
Relative to other other populous counties, Hillsborough County has a good number of seasoned/tenured coaches. However, with 53% of coaches at their school 1 year or less, it reflects a substantial amount of "churn."
Note the coaching continuity at most of the schools that have been winning the most of late.

OldSchoolLion got a reaction from Cat_Scratch in A Big Problem with Our Current Classifications
Below are 100 schools that opened since 1992 in the most populous areas of Florida. Only 23 of those schools made the playoffs last year, and only 11 of them won a playoff game. Amongst those who didn't, relatively few have had significant success in football since the school opened, and for those that did, the success was often short-lived. Hillsborough County is the poster child for this phenomenon.
The 100 schools below have won a total of 203 playoff games between them. 20 of those 200 victories were by Bartram Trail. Listed after each team is the number of playoff (p/o) wins by each school since they opened. 43 of the schools have never won a playoff game.
Teams in bold below made the playoffs last season. 38% of teams in Classes 1A-8A presently make the playoffs each year. So, the number of teams below that made the playoffs last season is disproportionately low.
The amount of big, new schools is unprecedented in Florida's history. Existing schools are becoming mega-schools, like Lehigh High below, potentially moving them up in class to an even more competitive environment.
https://www.news-press.com/story/news/education/2018/07/06/lehigh-senior-high-growing-into-mega-school-rapid-growth/760552002/
The upper classes have become loaded with "newer" schools. In a sense, they have been thrown into the fire before their programs have a chance to get traction. And even after 20 years, some are still struggling. With the current environment of talent concentrating at less and less schools, one has to wonder if these programs will ever get traction.
The number of schools in Florida will no doubt increase in the future. At this rate, will our upper classes become even more flooded with mediocre teams unless we develop a strategy beyond classifying by population?

OldSchoolLion got a reaction from Cat_Scratch in FL vs OOS Top-Ranked Teams - Game Results 2005-2017
I can only think of one game in which a titan from FL met one of the top 10 teams in Texas(based on end-of-season results) from a certain year..the Northwestern vs Southlake Carrroll game in 2007. Maybe I am forgetting some.
IMO a game like that would have as much intrigue as any OOS game one could schedule...ie vs Lake Travis, Allen, Katy, etc.

OldSchoolLion got a reaction from Cat_Scratch in FL vs OOS Top-Ranked Teams - Game Results 2005-2017
As I implied earlier, compiling the data was not meant to be an exercise in perfection with strict criteria, and I didn't advertise it as some masterpiece to prove a point. Sometimes I do things for myself and think "Gee, maybe some others might like to see this." It's a random set of data. Take it for what it is. I don't see too many others idiots like myself posting things for others to enjoy at midnight.
All of the FL teams listed above were legitimate state title contenders in the years they were listed, so to consider them "inferior" does not speak well for Florida football. Concerning Tucker and Stephenson, they are rock solid programs, but not what most GA folks would consider the most worthy of GA teams to deserve a national ranking.
I used "loose" criteria to define "top-ranked" OOS competitiors. Did not include teams that ended the year ranked outside the top 200 on Maxpreps. Is there better criteria? I'm sure. Did I care for the purposes of what I was doing and was I willing to dedicate any more time to the exercise than I already did? No. If anyone out there got something out of the data, I am glad I shared it.

OldSchoolLion reacted to DB4 in The Enigma of 7A District 16
As far as why the district is so weak, there are different reasons for different teams. For instance:
-Westland is just in an area devoid of talent and the school doesn't really care to have a good football team. God bless their coach, but he's got nothing there
-Miami Springs consistently has a top 3 team in the district as far as talent, but their coaching isn't strong; and I think they were poached pretty heavy this offseason by other schools for their players
- Mater and Doral pretty much depend on recruiting and when that doesn't work, you're going to see how they can't do anything (like I think they'll be this year)
-Mourning has talent, but again not great coaching and their numbers I hear are down
-Reagan is always gonna be a tough, ground and pound team. Never special, but always well coached. Can't do enough to win the district usually.
-Goleman has been the same, but they will open it up more this season. Talent is there, if they can put it all together it can be a special season
-South Miami had a nice season last year, this year they have some big time recruits. But their QB from last year is gone. He made them tick. If they don't have a capable replacement they won't do much. If they do find one, they could contend for the district.
-Sunset was fairly talented, I hear they lost a lot to graduation. Coaching isn't great to me. Every so often they have a really nice year. I don't see this year being that year though.

Welp. Here we are. First time in over a decade that I won't be in a press box on Friday night.
In the coming weeks, I hope to satisfy my "Friday Night fix" by taking a tour of the state. While my focus will be on South Florida, I plan on venturing out of the 561 to take in the best matchup of the week. I will be joined by my trusty sidekick, my nine-year-old son. Pictures. Videos. In-game updates. Restaurant and concession stand reviews. We'll have it all, so buckle up!
Not sure there is any reason to leave Palm Beach County this week. Heck of a slate in the 561. I will be in Delray on Thursday night for Miami Central-Atlantic, and on Friday, I plan to walk across the street for the battle of PBC. Let me know if you will be at either of the two. Would love to grab a burger and talk some ball.

OldSchoolLion got a reaction from 954gator in FL vs Georgia 50 Game Results from 2004-2017
Southern and central Georgia, especially the Valdosta and Warner Robins areas, really ruled until the mid-90's. Then Parview and Brookwood started making noise in Atlanta. Parkview won 3 titles in a row around 2000, which you just didn't see happening prior in years past.
The suburbs north and east of the city exploded and about 10 years ago a lot of the teams we hear about in Georgia today, ie Grayson, started coming on the scene. South Florida always had great football. Atlanta didn't, but what has happened there in the past 10 years is extraordinary. They don't have to worry about losing much talent to private schools. And unlike south FL, which is locked in by the Everglades, Atlanta can just keep growing since there is lots of open land to the north and east.
In a way, the scenario is much like the shift of power in the 90's from north FL southward, except in GA it has been from south to north.

The FHSAA has no interest because they get a percentage or flat rate for every playoff game.
So if they cut 2 classes like they should that would cut 30-60 games a year which is big money. They don't care that the playoffs are watered down and 75 percent of the games are blowouts.
Not that it would happen but how cool would it have been to watch the winner of Jax UC/Madison County play the winner of Champagant/Pahokee?
I know they changed a little but Jax TC vs Raines for the right to play the winner of Cocoa and Chaminade.
These are just examples for the sake of argument.

I think the final was 51-36 or something like that. It was a one score game, Apopka was driving, then they lost their QB to a hit that damaged his future career. Byrnes scored another touchdown after that, to increase the lead to two scores.
